Ninpocho Chronicles

Ninpocho Chronicles is a fantasy-ish setting storyline, set in an alternate universe World of Ninjas, where the Naruto and Boruto series take place. This means that none of the canon characters exists, or existed here.

Each ninja starts from the bottom and start their training as an Academy Student. From there they develop abilities akin to that of demigods as they grow in age and experience.

Along the way they gain new friends (or enemies), take on jobs and complete contracts and missions for their respective villages where their training and skill will be tested to their limits.

The sky is the limit as the blank page you see before you can be filled with countless of adventures with your character in the game.

This is Ninpocho Chronicles.

Some Time Ago
The legacy of the Jigoku-Mure spanned countless generations, and yet had come to near complete extinction before Sunagakure ever ventured beneath the earth. Lost were the days of cavernous dwelling among the now forgotten Taira mountains, when their people had spent their days advancing spiritual pursuits. Then, the preference was isolation to the developing societies around them. Now, all that remained were rumors, and tales of their demise. Through obfuscated efforts and cunning intellect, the so-called "Hell Flock" perhaps would have changed the face of Wind Country. It was one of their own who seemingly chose the village over his own clan, who would grow into a living and nearly forgotten legend. That Shinobi, was a man named Denrei... Intended to be a messenger for their cause since birth, and one of their brightest prospects.

The tales say that it first appeared that he had gone rogue, after first slaying his own abbot and clansmen. A man he once idolized as the epitome of what it meant to be of the clan, a living archive of ancient wisdom and philosophy. Denrei was hunted by the ANBU as he traveled Wind Country, slaughtering every member and sect of the Jigoku-Mure he would find along the way. Once his mission was complete, he returned to Sunagakure and gave himself up. When all the evidence was brought to light, he had discovered the abbot to be a traitor and his clan as a whole plotting simultaneous assault on the nation. Not a word had slipped from the lips of any of the operatives, and every clandestine mission had been a success. Years later, one reviewing the case may conclude the coup might have succeeded, if Denrei hadn't turned against them.

When asked why he chose the village over his own people, Denrei's response brought thoughtful pause. "I didn't choose the village over my own, I chose right over wrong. Nothing more." This would be quoted in several textbooks for future generations. He was granted amnesty and word was that he could have been made ANBU Captain, but you know how unreliable rumors were. Nonetheless, he chose to retire and live his days out in solitude among the villagers. He made no friends, and found no love... Keeping to himself and studying the archaic scrolls of the dead. Bolstering his power, and mastering his abilities. It wasn't long before he was almost unseen entirely, an urban myth among the population as decades rolled by.

Most people knew little of the Tengu themselves, or the extent of their integration with the Jigoku-Mure. It was only around the time the clan neared the climax for their assault, that strange stories popped up all over the country. Extravagant celebrations as well as governmental meetings within smaller settlements were being attacked. The assailant, while often described differently in each situation had several things in common... They'd always disrupt the event alone, adorn themselves with a red long-nosed mask, decorated with skulls, and displaying birdlike features. The avian traits were described at times as wings, nails like talons, or simply feathered clothing. The wrought terror among the lesser realms, much like that brought to the enemies faced by the Jigoku-Mure of Sunagakure. Though, no definitive connection or evidence had ever been found to back those ludicrous claims. Only words from men and women frightened beyond coherence, and thought to be completely insane.

Eventually, all of that would steadily be fictionalized over the years and then forgotten as the elderly died off. Few people knew the truth, or about as much of it as the Sunagakure council did. Perhaps, just a little bit more... There were many old clans among the village, one of which called themselves the Aikayume. Parallel to the Jigoku-Mure claiming descent from Yōkai, the Aikayume had a more pronounced relationship with the Kitsune. Likewise, the Toraono themselves were known to be descended from a self-crowned Demon King. Those sensitive to spiritual energies and natural ambiances, would note the tainted aura surrounded all Jigoku-Mure. Denrei himself included. While the clan kept itself separated from both prior to their extermination, it's unknown how much information either would have gathered...

During Sunagakure's transition from the surface to a life below, Denrei followed. Eventually taking up residence in the Grand Palais, he found himself at home in an old monastery within the deepest reaches of the district. More often than not, it seemed abandoned... If not eerily kept tidy as well. While almost no one bothered to venture into or pay attention to the old structure, it had a way of warding off the curios as well. Those that draw near are said to be invaded by an overwhelming sense of dread and doom... Fear, growing like flames fed crisp tinder. The edifice itself was mostly carved out of the very caverns, with unfinished cuts of stone scattered about. The religious abode had been there before Sunagakure's arrival, seeming ancient even way back then. Buddhist-like carvings of people, Kami, and Yōkai filled the vicinity with stony eyes that seemed to watch all. The lights that fed the underground illumination seemed to malfunction the closer one got to the seemingly dead structure... It was here, that "The Last Tengu" was said to reside. Yet, few ever saw him...

Those that stepped onto the property, and few ever did but foolish children on dares... The results were always the same, being overwhelmed by fear and needing rehabilitation in the asylum. No one ever seriously got hurt though, and the last time anyone had visibly stepped foot onto the property had been over a decade. What could possibly inspire any other youngster to try the same? Maybe too much time had passed, and the urban legends had died completely... Maybe, the one coming, was intentionally seeking that which terrified most all others...

Miscellaneous:
- Takahashi Jin'ichi is not in this thread.
- I will be RPing as the NPC, Jigoku-Mure Denrei.
- This is technically a "Flashback" since it's prior to Denrei coming out of retirement, as well as before Azusa's exam.
- Denrei's here, but I felt like setting up the atmosphere and letting you do your thing with it first.
- The pervading fear and sense of dread is Daunting Presence [Mastered].
- Word Count: 0,969
- Here we go.

Re: A Fox is a Wolf Who Sends Flowers [Private]

"For the Spirit of the Monastery"

It was a simple prayer, but one Azusa had recalled seeing written on charms people would leave at the Aikayume shrine when praying. This one, in particular, she had remembered seeing multiple times throughout the years as she grew up, but never was told answers to what it meant side from myths or stories she had assumed were meant to scare her. It was not until recently, when she had caught an elderly couple hanging the charm, that Azusa was able to finally ask its meaning; that within old ruins in the deeper ends of the village, there was a spirit, or the presence of one.

The elderly couple couldn't tell her anything more on this spirit, whether it meant any harm, or simply just desired quiet. Only that the area was cursed to repel any would-be visitors. Even those who would attempt to bring offerings had to do so from a healthy distance away, or else risk angering the spirit.

Normally, it was not uncommon to hear about spirits residing in areas; but for one to have a strong enough presence to 'curse' an area was a pretty large deal, so Azusa took it upon herself to at least check the area. If the rumors had any substance behind them, then there were few clans as qualified as the Aikayume to visit the domain of a spirit, outside of unique individuals with prodigal atonement to the supernatural. If the spirit did mean harm, it would be better for someone with knowledge of spirits to see to it rather than someone oblivious to them. As the new Priestess of the clan, Azusa had felt this was an opportunity to prove herself...at least to herself, that she was worthy of being her mother's daughter. She wouldn't ask any from the clan to scout the area

...Except for Hinoka. Azusa's silver-haired cousin had the unfortunate fate of being 'Lady Azusa's' personal retainer, which had mostly meant tending to her messes and keeping her focused, but also meant she bore the brunt of Azusa's whimsical nature. Although the little Kitsune did calm down of sorts, since becoming Priestess...

----

The two had arrived to the outskirts of the Monastery, Hinoka with a backpack of supplies from the shrine, Azusa boldly holding her wooden training blade, and both of them in traditional red-white shrine maiden attire, entertaining the idea that it would provide them some sort of spiritual strength. The two Aikayume knew that the rumors were onto something once they arrived, never mind the chills that had ran down her back as she approached, or how even the lights seemed to be repelled away the further they got. "H-hey Hinoka...You brought those scrolls and seals Mother left behind, r-right? Like...the ones with wards against spirits? Just...just asking..." The Priestess tried to hide her intimidation, her Kitsune ears focused sharply to detect any possible sounds. "What? N-no! I only have the ones for the Monastary. The last priestess left the other ones behind for you. I wouldn't go through her...your...stuff like that..." Her cousin replied. "Y-you go through my stuff all the time! W-whatever though...The spirits are probably just lonely or something. If I was a spirit, I wouldn't want to be forgotten. So if someone prays with them, they'll be fine. M-Maybe some flowers too...Spirits love flowers." Had they not been in unfamiliar territory, Hinoka would have corrected Azusa by telling her that technically, she was a spirit...or at least would become one as her Kitsune blood grew in strength. But she found it more appealing to tag along quietly behind her.

Regardless, Azusa truly believed most spirits meant no harm...By why did she find herself clenching her wooden training katana with a deathgrip? (I'm not gonna let Hinoka see me scared. But...why did Mother never mention this place? There's definitely something here...) Surely, a wiser Kitsune like her mother would have been aware of such a presence in what was a relatively close proximity. It was away from the Toraono clan, too, and wasn't nearly as an extravagant abode as Azusa had pictured the Toraono residing in. She must have had a reason or understanding to why she never mentioned this place...

....Eventually, the pair came to a halt. "A-A-Azusa..." The short shrine maiden stuttered out in whispers between hushed breaths. "...L-lady Azusa...You mean. Haha..." Azusa had tried to joke to alleviate their tension in vain, but also found herself speaking in a whisper. "L-lady Az-Azu..sa.. Lets go back? We can come back at a different time. O-or one of the other shrine attendants can come here instead..." "Y-you're just nervous. Look, its c-clean around here...p-people probably come here all the t-time..." Azusa could see that Hinoka was struggling to continue...That she, herself, was also struggling to continue against her primal instinct telling her to turn back and retreat.

But she was stubborn.
"H-h-hey...spirit..." Her voice was quiet, barely more than trying to whisper without waking someone up. Had she been alone, at this point Azusa would have given up and returned home. But behind her, her cousin sank to her knees in a whimper...And Azusa was trying to prove that she could be a Priestess for her clan. That was enough to motivate Azusa,

She took a deep breath, taking the the ring of charms the two had brought from the Shrine, the ones referring to the 'monastery spirit', and raised it in the air. "...HEEEEY! SPIRIT! WE'VE GOT A PRESENT FOR YOU! YOU AREN'T FORGOTTEN! S-SO DON'T FEEL LONELY OR ANYTHING! THERE ARE PEOPLE PRAYING FOR YOU!" ...If it wasn't obvious, Azusa shouted...But at the cost of losing nearly all the strength in her trembling legs. "...*Hah* *Hah* S-see Hinoka? N-nothings scary or anything. I-it probably is definitely happy now maybe. S-so you can wipe away your tears...Y-you b-baby..." Azusa helped lift Hinoka up...But also used her for her own support. "...We'll just go alittle bit further ok? If there's nothing there we'll just set the charms there and leave, okay? Y-You can even hold onto me...please." The two continued...
