Ninpocho Chronicles

Ninpocho Chronicles is a fantasy-ish setting storyline, set in an alternate universe World of Ninjas, where the Naruto and Boruto series take place. This means that none of the canon characters exists, or existed here.

Each ninja starts from the bottom and start their training as an Academy Student. From there they develop abilities akin to that of demigods as they grow in age and experience.

Along the way they gain new friends (or enemies), take on jobs and complete contracts and missions for their respective villages where their training and skill will be tested to their limits.

The sky is the limit as the blank page you see before you can be filled with countless of adventures with your character in the game.

This is Ninpocho Chronicles.

The halls of the Sileo were silent. Sound-proof walls and thick steel doors providing no hint to what went on within the rooms that lined the hall. Lavish décor meticulously placed throughout to make the home of ANBU operatives seem as comfortable as possible, given their dark tasks. Even though Shinrya Kahako walked these halls almost every time she was on duty, her opinion was still the same: The interior of the Sileo Tempestas could give even the Shinrya mansion a run for its money.

But that’s not why she was here. Footfalls landing soft ‘thuds’ on the plush carpet, Kahako and another operative of her division followed an ANBU guard through the dim halls with a strict destination in mind. Strange masks with jellyfish symbols rested on both their faces. The only indicator that showed they were members of the Sentou Henkan. They were never allowed to be left alone while in the building. The level of clearance they had on a situation was often ‘need to know.’ Oftentimes, when she was not on a mission, she rarely ever knew why she was even called in until she was neck deep in someone’s chest cavity. Today, as they approached one particular door, Kahako recognized it as the entryway to the small clinic they were offered in the building, and her body naturally tensed.

All the supplies they ever needed for the ANBU resided in this small clinic. The decently sized room of white was agreed upon to ensure nothing nefarious slipped in through the SH members. They did not follow all the same rules and regulations that the ANBU did for vetting. As a result, they were not trusted enough to bring in their own supplies. Everything was requisitioned by the ANBU, at Kahako's suggestion.

Granted, it was nothing like the hospital. Most of the time, they were supplied with just enough for one job: Make sure the patient didn’t die. Anything more serious required extensive paperwork and a heavily guarded unit of ANBU to participate in a transfer to the Aesculapium. Then the job of the Sentou became: make sure the patient doesn’t die while you wait for the red tape to be cleared away and bureaucracy to take its course. Despite the large task, the Sentou didn't need a lot in the opinion of the higher-ups. Oftentimes, Kahako found a certain thrill in getting creative. Sometimes it was just plain annoying. But this was the agreement between the two branches to ensure one didn’t encroach upon the authority of the other.

So, knowing what door they were about to walk through, Kahako mentally prepared herself for what she assumed would be another day of patching up someone on the brink of death. “I hope you didn’t eat lunch.” Kahako said quietly to the trainee beside her. Slowly, the ANBU guard opened the door, and allowed the two mednin to slip in. Once they were through, he followed behind and locked the door behind them.

Immediately, both would be greeted to a terrible sight. Strapped to one of three moving hospital beds, a man laid-- bleeding--from the many wounds he carried. Cuts and gashes littered his body, but it was the bruises he sported that worried her the most. His face was swollen due to what appeared to be continuous beatings to the head. The markings continued their way down his body, disappearing beneath his ANBU uniform. Kahako was the first to react.
“I’ll begin grabbing supplies. Suzume-san, begin analysis on the patient and see if you can get him conscious,” Kahako ordered using the code name given to all members of the Sentou. Moving to the rows of shelves, Kahako started grabbing all manner of items and machinery. “What happened to him?” She asked the ANBU guard. He would have already been briefed on telling her what she needed to know. Coupled with her comrade’s analysis, they would have little time to bring the man back to a stable condition. His current state what probably the reason why they were both called in instead of the usual one.

Kiri would see, upon reaching the bound man, how near death he was. The man’s face was beaten to a point where the mednin would have had a hard time identifying him as one of the elite. Both eyes swelled shut. His breath irregular, shallow, and pained. The places that weren’t marred by a darkly purple bruise were of a sickly pale color, and in places inbetween, he spotted stinking, deformed flesh. As if some sort of acid was spilled upon him. The smell akin to a rotten egg that was left broken on a hot sidewalk. Kiri and Kahako would have their hands full, but Kiri’s first task was to try and get the man to wake up.

Kiri had just returned to the country not too long ago and had been busy trying to adjust and fit in once again. It wasn’t like he had been before, but there was a sense of struggle in him this time around. Perhaps, it was the fact that he was well aware that he had done quite an embarrassing, and grave incident in Kumogakure right before he left. And so, he would take extra care in his part-time in the hospital and clinics, make-up the year-long journey outside with extra lessons and after-work sessions with the Academy, and making sure to acquiring, if not reviewing, new medical journals to refresh his memory and keep himself updated to any of the new techniques and diagnosing matters there was since he’d been gone. Yes, he was still a mere trainee, but for someone of his age and mentors, it was to be expected that he knew as much as they did.

But still, it came quite a shock when he received a formal invitation from the supervisor to go to the Medical Branch Main HQ. Once there, he was only given a brief detail, after a few scoldings and appraisal of his work, before he was let in on what was about to transpire. Honestly, the only thing he could say that would have been the reason why he was chosen for this, was his battle streak (if not him being the only one free at the moment), for whatever else was there? He knew of the Sentou, and he had been having an inclination for that division despite his inner protests at times. Sure, he may dream of becoming a paediatrics physician, but he can’t deny the fact that his soul longed for combat, and if there was something he knew of the Sentou, it was that they were the ones out there to work with the ANBU. Then, again, if they knew of his record, shouldn’t they already know of his temperament? Guess, he’ll have to trust their judgment.

He met with her, a raven-haired woman who exuded a naturally composed aura, and though she may seem cold at first glance to others, Kiri could see the experience reflected in her eyes. And thus, when they were heading off to where they were, Kiri kept to himself, making sure not to bring disgrace to his mentors, Osu and Junko, and remember all the things he had learned and would possibly need to address in this mission of theirs.

Entering the rather dull yet impregnable fort-like structure, Kiri would stick close to his supervisor, making sure not to get in the way. He would notice the silence of the ANBU, remembering once more his brief altercation with the Leaf ANBU before, and how he wanted to just forget it now so as not to bring any doubts or shame to the present. Luckily, he would no longer have to worry about it as another, of greater import, has come. They finally arrive at the said room, a rather small one with all the requested tools and medicines, where they were searched thoroughly before allowed to go further. And just past the first room, they would end up in another secluded place where the patient lay. Remembering the supervisor’s words earlier, Kiri almost had a feeling it would be gruesome. He actually thought it would have to be an autopsy to be honest, something he had experienced before in the hospital, under guided hands and lectures of course, but it wasn’t. Instead, they were falling short on time to prevent it from becoming an autopsy for real.

With the first command from the supervisor, Kiri nodded and wen to the patient’s side, taking with him minimal devices to begin assessing vitals. He listened for the pulse, just to be precise: 60 – quite low, oxygen: 69 – dangerously getting low; and pulse…. He paused as he tried to concentrate… it was around 140… Alarmed, Kiri would look back to the supervisor and inform her of the said vitals and added, “I’ll try my best to wake and keep him conscious. If he falls asleep, he may fall into a dangerous concussion leading to a comma, or worse…”

At that, he clapped his hands in front of him, almost in prayer before his chakra began to gather. Then he would lay one hand on the man’s chest, allowing the chakra of healing to flow, hoping to aid in the healing process of the tissues of the body. The other hand was placed on the man’s forehead, allowing the chakra to flow through there, hoping to alleviate the pressure from rising and give a warm feeling. And clearly, he would call out to the man. “Sir, please wake up. I know that you’re body is weak, and you’re on the brink of letting go, but you can’t give up. Not yet. Listen to my voice and wake up. Even the smallest sign. I won’t let go until you do.”

There it was, the strange words he would usually utter. He had gotten trouble with it before– words that seemed to promise a lot, like a miracle was waiting, but for the terminally ill, it was like a painful statement, an insult, but Kiri was strange like that. Despite his harshness in battles, his fascination of certain things often frowned upon, he was never one to give up on any patient. Let him hurt after he fails, but never to fail before he starts– was one thing he kept in mind all this time. And perhaps it was because he was accustomed to dealing with the children that even his approach with this full-grown adult was almost as if the patient was a child. But every warrior, deep inside, was one, especially when they were hurt, beaten blue, and ready to give in.

“Please, wake up,” he repeated as if he was transferring his energy and his will to the patient through his hands, “It’s not yet time. Follow my voice and open your eyes.”

“Kishi was found outside the gates twenty minutes before you both were called.” The ANBU operative began as Kahako rushed to the side of the bed opposite of Kiri with a tray full of various devices and plastic bags. Using a pair of heavy scissors to tear away what remained of the patient’s bloodied uniform, Kahako nodded to Kiri, silently acknowledging the words he relayed to her.

The patient, now confirmed as ANBU operative codenamed, Kishi, did not respond to Kiri’s healing chakra at first. His ashen face suggesting that the man may already be dead. If it wasn’t for Kiri’s knowledge in the medical field, and the tiniest of vital signs, the mednin may have thought all hope was already lost. But after a few seconds of nothing, came the tiny, golden string of hope. It was almost unnoticeable. The smallest flicker of the patient’s pointer finger. Almost as if he heard Kiri’s pleas and accepted them.

Over Kiri’s own quiet pleas to Kishi, the ANBU guard in the room drew closer to Kahako to continue. “He and another member of the branch were called away on a mission to a nearby civilian village. The leader claimed they were repeatedly attacked by raiders on occasion for the past three weeks. Following initial main branch investigation, rumors and inconclusive evidence indicated the possibility of chakra being used in each attack. He and two other operatives were dispatched to access the situation, confirm main branch reports, and end the bandits should they be rouge shinobi. The last we heard from the team was when they left four days ago.”

Grabbing the IV bag next to her, Kahako began feeling around the man’s arm before clicking her tongue in frustration. “He must be dehydrated, I’m having trouble finding a vein,” she muttered to herself and Kiri. “Kishi… Kishi… where have I heard that name before…” pausing in her current task, it was as if a lightbulb went off in her mind. “Patient call sign Kishi…The Knight... That’s right. He’s registered with the hospital as a Hachimon.”

Finally finding a vein and securing the IV, Kahako rolled her sleeves up and ran to the nearby sink. Grabbing a bowl, Kahako filled it to the brim with water before returning. “Suzume, this may not completely be the work of an outside attack. Bruised and damaged flesh along the majority of his body, low vital signs, dehydration… See if you can diagnose any broken limbs, and if you have the means, the status of his inner organs. If both are in dire straits, it would mean he may have encountered a situation where he needed to unlock his eighth gate. Make sure his blood pressure doesn’t fall too low. If he loses anymore blood, there will be nothing we can do for him.”

The eighth gate. The gate of Death. How the man had managed to make it back to the gates after submitting his body to such a terrible release of power was a miracle only Shinbatsu could have provided. Setting the bowl of water to the side, Kahako summoned her own chakra to her fingertips. After a few quick handseals, she moved her hand over the bowl before slowly raising it up. Some of the water followed her each motion. Suspended in the air, she coerced the ball of glowing liquid to hover over Kishi’s body.

Placing all her focus on the chakra-infused water, Kahako initiated a series of slow motions with both her hands, morphing the ball into a shape, then to a kanji. Each stroke drawn was slow and delicate as each motion wrapped and twisted her palms to produce a unique line. Almost mesmerizing gestures that could only be described as some form of Taiichi. ‘Resuscitate’ it read when she was done. Holding the kanji in place by keeping her palm upright, Kahako breathed a little easier. “I am going to do what I can to flush out his system of whatever poison still remains and bring his vitals up.” She informed Kiri before allowing the water kanji to lower onto his chest and absorb.

As he relayed the message, it soon came to be a dire moment. While Kiri was attentive to the patient before him, he couldn’t help but have this gut feeling, a sort of dread. This wasn’t to be a case of simple battle wounds. Looking further down along the patient’s revealed flesh, he could see hints of bruises from what seemed like internal bleeding, haemorrhages having built up. This was bad, indeed, and the moment his supervisor continued the treatment and given him more orders, Kiri knew he would have to a little extra harder.

To be honest, he wanted to summon one of the slug contracts in aiding with this situation. Eirin’s specialty was towards bleeding, and the fast-acting slime that she exuded was one of the best that could linger and heal at the same time. But this room, not being the normal place, with watchful guards about them, a summoning could end up badly. He may be targeted, or Eirin for that matter, and their hope of helping the situation could go up in smokes. It wasn’t the ideal, that was for sure. And so, he would have to search his memory for ways to address the current situation. But the only thing that ran in his mind was to keep transferring his chakra through healing, allowing his healing jutsu to work itself.

He did, however, move his hand that was above the chest, to the side and then held the man’s arm, while he let his other hand remain on the man’s forehead. This allowed Kahako space to work her jutsu, of which Kiri found rather interesting and hopeful. He could sense the power that came from it, and with luck, that should help in the process. Poison was evident and while he could keep the man from the verge of dying, they would have to act fast to remove any other impurities, and not just poison alone.

Sadly, he did not have eyes that could see all. A Hyuuga’s Byakkugan would have been helpful at this moment. However, he did have something that only his kind were known for. As he concentrated his chakra along, repeating those soft words, a tendrils of shadows began to stretch out from under his hands and spread across the man’s arm, stretching further, dividing into smaller branches until they looked like veins that began to slip under the man’s torn clothes. It would continue until all of his body was covered and by then, Kiri closed his eyes and fell into a momentary silence.

Meanwhile, the chakra pouring out from the hand that was placed on the man’s head was getting stronger, that is to say, it provided essential healing properties, but it also allowed him to penetrate to the will to some extent. Slowly, he could hear a breaking sound, a crumbling of the wall, until finally, there was a shattering. Opening his eyes, Kiri would find himself in the void, a white space of his soulscape, but there was a distortion in the middle of it. A shadowy mist forms behind Kiri before revealing an obsidian wolf’s head with golden eyes just hovering lightly next to Kiri’s head. A word of caution from his brother was enough before Kiri stepped through the distortion.

This was the the first time he attempted a soul dive to a patient. With memories from his brother, it was far easier between two Hasegawas, more so if their beast souls were in agreement, but towards another who was not from the clan and who did not possess any other soul within, it was… dull and frustrating. For past the distortion was a bland grayscape and nothing more. When he did it with a patient before, he found the ailing mind at the centre of it and was able to learn more of the illness that burdened the body.

This one… however, was different. Dull, frustrating, and dangerously so. Kiri saw at the centre of the grayscape a figure that floated, humanoid shape but curled forward as if aching. He could feel waves of emotions from it– anger, frustration, remorse, sadness– but there was something else. He took care not to walk past, but to walk in circles, sideways, observing the floating being, until he caught sight of red light along certain points of the body. Red lights that mark the existence of chakra exploding without respite. And while he had not seen that before, it somehow reminded him of all those medical journal reports concerning those specific parts.

“I see… so this is how it is,” he murmurs back in the real world, before he feels his body pulled away, vacuumed from the distortion and surrounded by the shadowy mist of his brother’s soul. Back into the safety of the white void of his soulscape, Kiri would blink once, and then twice. He vision returns, opening his eyes to find the man on the bed once more, and the sound of the urgency in the room.

“Was that the… Hachimon’s final gate?” he asked before remembering the urgency and turning back to Kahako, “I saw… well, it’s not an accurate diagnosis because it wasn’t a medical technique but… I saw… no, felt,” he corrected himself, “traces of a large chakra burst in key points of the body.” The shadows that branched around the patient would quickly shrink and return to his hand that continued to lay a healing touch on the man’s arm. “And it would seem as though most of the bruising are indeed from within. There are internal bleedings near the legs, especially, but also at the spine, and the upper rib area is fragile to the touch, a broken collarbone towards the right. But he’s quite the fighter, I can sense it.”

Looking back down to the patient, he added, “He will survive. If I may be allowed, I would want to summon my aid to keep his vitals steady so I can perform another treatment while you also proceed with yours.”

At first, it appeared that what Kahako had done did little more than absorb water into skin, but to the mednin who cast it, she could feel the power of her jutsu extend. Exposed wounds slowly stopped bleeding as the jutsu forced the platelets and protein within to work in overtime. Her jutsu wouldn’t restore the blood already lost, or completely stop the bleeding, but it gave them more time.

As a thin film of protection spread all over the body, she caught out of the corner of her eye shadow-like tendrils extend from her comrade’s hand and spread across Kishi’s flesh. She couldn’t focus on his strange methods for long, however, as her jutsu still required her to focus on the task at hand. Slowly it took hold of the poisons flowing through his blood stream, gathering it within her chakra, and disappearing.

Kahako never found the time to learn the science behind such a phenomenon. Whether it was her chakra obliterating the foreign substances within the body, or whether her jutsu broke the poisons down into chemical components that would no longer be harmful, she never knew. It was the results she cared about at the end.

But this was not the place to wonder on such matters for long. Jutsu complete, Kahako was able to recheck the man’s vitals. Better. Much better but, they were still not out of the woods. Her head turned back to Kiri as he murmured first to himself, then turned to her. A strange way to confirm her suspicions, but an excellent way none the less. “Yes, that matches what I’ve read on what happens to the chakra system when the last gate is released. So much power for almost too great a price.” She said again with a click of her tongue and a sigh.

When he asked if he could summon an aid to assist him with his part of the treatment, Kahako had to pause raise a brow. What an odd question... was this his first assignment? Realizing that he probably wouldn’t see her look of confusion through their mask, she spoke with a small laugh in her voice. “Please. I will gladly accept any form of assistance. Whether it be hand, foot, claw, or wing, we’re always undersupplied here, so never hold back what you have to offer.”

Gesturing towards the man, she continued. “He’s in a more stable condition now, but we’ve still got a lot of work to do. Opening the Death gate kills most by overextending everything well past it’s limit. We will have to stabilize him from the inside and out. It’s no small matter that will be resolved in a day.” Closing her eyes once more, she summoned her chakra. A different set of handseals summoning another powerful jutsu. “I’ve removed the poisons from his body, but my Jutsu is meant only to just barely bring someone back from death. I will administer another that will begin necessary repairs to his organs, but he still is severely lacking in blood… and will need extensive bone repair. We can’t really move him to the hospital until the very minimum of both complete.” Kahako rubbed her head, the slight tugs if exhaustion already beginning to take root.

After they had finally reached a common theory as to what may have happened to the patient, Kahako was quick to make her decision on the necessary treatments. Kiri looked on with awe– never had he seen someone with such conviction and certainty in her judgment. Sure, the doctors back in the hospital were quick to make pronouncements, but there would always been a layer of doubt. Even Osu had a skeptical side to him. This woman, however, was amazingly certain.

And then, there was a brief moment of embarrassment for Kiri. He knew he made a wrong move in asking such a question, which may have shown his amateurish side. Not that he was trying to hide it. In normal occasions, he would have just done it without prior hesitation, but because he knew of the place they were in, he was cautious. Still, it didn’t help the fact that he was red as a tomato, cheek to ear, and thankfully the mask provided for him was there to hide a bit of it. Otherwise, the ANBU may have smirked at his mistake.

Nevertheless, now with permission and their immediate need to stabilise the patient, Kiri would quickly take action. He stepped back for a moment, letting go of the patient and cutting off his chakra from his hands. As he did so, the shadow from his feet began to stretch once more, forming a circle around him with layers of smaller lines branching out to form intricate symbols. Then, Kiri would reach for the ground in a kneeling position and let his hand spread out his chakra, sending a thin line of it tracing the shadows. Immediately, a swirl of chakra would form from the ground and as he stood up and stepped back, the chakra would shoot up, seemingly having swallowed the shadow symbol and formed a human-sized entity of glowing blue light before it solidified further into shape.

What was summoned was a blue-colored seaslug, but in this case, it was floating in the air, seemingly swimming in invisible water. Truth be told, the summoned creature known as Eirin, was oozing with her chakra that it coats her entire body, part of it was to gather any moisture in the air to provide for her a way to glide like swimming. But that would be for another day. Eirin would quickly spot the patient and mentally coordinated with Kiri, quickly learning of the situation. A nod and the seaslug would approach the patient on the bed, hovering just above it, giving enough room for Kiri and Kahako to work under it, as she flattens her self parallel to the ceiling. From there, there was a secretion of blue slime from along her limbs that dripped into one long sticky goo until it fell on the man’s chest. Immediately, there would be a spike of chakra in area as Eirin began to concentrate in healing the man. Along cuts, a blue light would be seen to hasten the earlier healing process that Kahako had begun. And from within, there chakra being poured into the patient would begin to heal tissues and pro-actively increase blood production. A night’s rest worth of blood regeneration would then only take an hour or so.

“Eirin will handle the bleeding problem. She can also hasten the regenerative process of the cells within,” said Kiri as he approached the bed once more. He then took note of the proceedings before he returned one hand on the man’s forehead once more to let his healing chakra transfer. And his hand grabbed the man’s arm where he let his shadows move once more, though this time, it seemed to grab firmly on the limbs as well as throughout the body, correcting them or securing them right where the pained tissues and muscles were. What would normally be the binding of the shadows was now providing a brace to keep the body in perfect form. “I’ll provide a brace-structure with my shadows so you can repair the organs without worrying about unnecessary movements.”

In the short seconds it took Kiri to summon his aid, Kahako had infused her chakra with more water from within the bowl next to her and summoned it into the air. The second set of liquid kanji she performed danced didn’t require nearly as much of her strength or focus as the first. But it was not without its uses.

A shadow overhead pulled Kahako’s attention long enough to give her pause. The large blue slug hovered over the three of them with its attention focused entirely on the patient directly below it. For moment, Kahako found the creature to be exceedingly adorable, and fleetingly wondered if, after this was all over, it would allow her to scratch it under its chin. Do slugs even feel when people touch them? Would the chakra Eirin oozed feel as gooey as it looked? Questions she would have to ask her comrade after the emergency had passed.

Refocusing, she nodded gratefully to both Kiri and Eirin. “Well noted, I will begin analyzing and administering healing procedures to internal organs.” Now that she no longer had to worry about Kishi bleeding to death, Kahako started her healing technique at his heart. The Kanji remained hovered over the patient’s body, loosening a drip and growing smaller as she passed over each major region.

From within, the cells that would normally not regenerate naturally pulsed violently and started to multiply. The first drop of liquid caused the heart monitor to spike alarmingly, but Kahako shook her head as she kept her eyes on his chest to reassure those in the room. “A false response, it will return to normal shortly. Repairing the heart and cardiovascular system this way causes it to happen. Moving onto the abdomen starting with the right hypochondriac.” Minutes ticked by in near silence. With Kiri stabilizing the body and maintaining Kishi’s blood pressure, Kahako was able to move faster than she normally would have been able to alone. Each drip of chakra from Kahako’s water did as it was intended: coating the internal organ with healing powers, forcing cells that would not normally regenerate to regenerate, but still the patient showed no signs of approaching consciousness anytime soon.

It worried Kahako that she did not see a response from the patient. The possible damage to his brain could be extensive, but only a transfer to the Aesculapium and the nearest MRI machine could provide them with any light to how grave the situation could be. The only thing they could do here, Kiri was already performing. His healing chakra would keep any swelling of the brain at bay for the time being as long as he kept forcing it through the man’s head.

Kiri’s and Kahako’s combined efforts were not entirely in vain, however. While the swelling and bruises did not show much sign of change, the pallor of Kishi’s skin slowly returned to normal. His blood pressure and other vitals slowly rose out of the critical stage they were in when they got there. After the last drops of her kanji disappeared. Kahako sighed and stepped away from the table. “Patient appears to be stable enough for transfer to the hospital,” she said as she checked vitals again and went back to the shelves near her. “ANBU-san, please issue the request for patient transfer. We will stabilize any broken bones, so by the time the escort team arrives he will be ready for transfer.” The ANBU guard nodded quietly and began muttering under his breath through his head set.

Returning with the necessary materials for splints and braces, Kahako handed Kiri half of what she carried. “We need to make sure he’s stabilized to the bed for transport. There is not much else we can do here that won’t require further testing. I’ll start with his legs. You brace his head. Keep applying chakra occasionally. It helps keep the swelling off his skull.”

The delicate movement and use of chakra was inspiring. Kiri would so often glance over to his supervisor. Despite unable to see her face, he was certain that behind the mask, all her concentration was on the patient. Still, he couldn’t help but feel inferior. Not that he was bothered by it, rather that with each passing second, he wondered how much more he could learn and possibly grow if he stayed with this person. It was definitely a once-in-a-lifetime chance and Osu would want him to try out different means of becoming a mednin. And perhaps this was his calling.

A small murmur and he glanced up to find Eirin trying to converse with him telepathically, seemingly updating about the patient’s status. He nodded as he reported to Kahako, “The internal bleeding is coming to a stop. Eirin will now focus on supplementing the blood vessels.” At that, he would return to concentrate on pouring his chakra into the man’s head. Slowly, he would see that the color on the man’s face was returning, from its ghastly appearance to something filled with life. A glance to the kanji that marked Kahako’s jutsu says that the treatment was nearing its end for now. That was good. They would just have to keep the man stable until the transfer team arrives.

With the next part of the treatment underway, Kiri would accept the splints and follow as ordered. Eirin, for the time being, would pour another goo onto the man’s face. A facial mask, but it was a soothing and healing slime that covered the treatment process as Kiri went to secure the man’s head to a stabilised angle. He carefully placed the splints and adjusted the bandages to wrap around the man’s head. Not too tight, but not too loose either. And when he was done, he got back to placing his hand on the man’s forehead and concentrated another healing jutsu to transfer. Fortunately, his beast’s power was fuelling him, otherwise the normal shinobi would have felt winded by now.

He’d only stop once the transfer team arrives and by then, he would recall Eirin into the slug’s realm, but not before giving her a good long embrace and kiss to the head.

Kahako was careful in her ministrations as she gently wrapped Kishi’s legs in gauze, attaching a temporary splint in the process. Even though Kiri could see and feel major breaks in the body, the ankle housed so many tiny bones that, without an x-ray or jutsu of the like, they wouldn’t know if the ANBU had sustained hairline fractures or breaks in them.

With the bracing process complete, both mednin would be able to finally breathe a sigh of relief. The man was still far from stable, but he was no longer about to die. “ETA on the escort team?” Kahako asked the ANBU guard at the door.

“We have operatives ready, we’re just waiting on the paperwork to come back from the Raikage’s office.” That’s right. Ever since Ayumu had taken over the branch, all movement of special interest parties had to be approved through him before transfer. The usual ‘long time’ ended up taking even longer. Looks like they would still have some time before making any further moves.

“You said he went out with two other officers. What happened to them?” Kahako asked. The question had burned her since she first received the report on what happened. Job done for the moment, she now had the time to ask. The ANBU man hesitated. An awkward silence filled the room as he weighed if the information was confidential. Seemingly coming to a conclusion he nodded.

“We haven’t heard from them. Patrols around the outer walls and a couple miles further showed no trace of anyone besides him. We’re not sending any more operatives on the task to learn what happened to them until we are able to get his full report.” At this, it seemed the ANBU guard’s shoulders sagged in relief. “Thank you, Sparrows. Kishi is well known here and well loved. It would have been a sad day to report that he fell.”

At this, Kahako fell into her own silence, turning her head back to the patient and allowing Kiri the chance to thank the ANBU guard on the behalf of them both. For they weren’t out of the woods yet. And even if they could restore him to full health, all still may be lost depending on what got him in this state in the first place. After all, the body was difficult to repair. But the mind? The mind repaired itself on it's own time if it was even willing to get past the trauma at all.

With the treatment done, waiting was all they could do. At that point, Kiri couldn’t help but overhear the conversation. Then again, it wasn’t so much of an eavesdropping as he was there together with Kahako, after all, and this was part of their assignment. Being able to know what had caused the incident would help lead in further treatment. Or so he thought it would only be as simple as that. Little did know then that he would be thrust into bigger things.

Kiri approached the ANBU and regarded him for a moment. It was admirable to think that they weren’t as cold as rumours ought them to be. But then again, they were human just like him. At that, he was glad that the ANBU cared for their brethren as much as their objectives.

“Thank you for your hard-work,” said Kiri before he added something that Osu mostly scolds him for– uncertain assurance, “He’ll definitely make it.” But this time, he was certain of it. Because a few months back he had sworn he’d protect the village and its citizen with all he could. And whatever it took to bring back this man into good health, physically or mentally, he’d do. After all, with his recent training over his clan’s own peculiarities, he came to learn it would do well with the medical field.
