The mountains were rocky as they stood indomitable and permanent in their place for all eternity. This high up even the clouds would only briefly pass over as wind pushed them against its rocky surface and the only way across was over. It was during these time that the surface would gain a dew to feed the sparse and hardy plants and fungus which grew at this height. So little oxygen and carbon dioxide meant that the larger plants just couldn't survive here.
A shadow passed over the granite like surface. This was unusual as there was no life up here. Not even the birds flew this high. The oxygen forced them lower. Oxygen and food. Nothing edible lived on the surface up here except tiny insects. Yet the bird was massive and majestic. Even the mighty eagle would find a perch hidden from sight when this bird was seen. Surely a bird of this predatory nature would not be this high without a purpose.
The insects even seemed to be on the move in an unusual way. They would normally be drinking what little amount of water could be found and using it to survive. Yet today they were moving across every surface, searching every crevice for something... though this must have been a figment of ones imagination. After all... insects do as they do, they don't search for something when everything they need to survive has already been found.
Shinobi sometimes walked this way... only those strong enough would... maybe the bird was hunting the most dangerous of prey. Perhaps the insects could sense it.
