Main Branch - IC & OoC Information

All Shinobi of Suna

All of the player/shinobi of this village will follow the same progression in terms of ranking up IC.

Academy Student > Genin > Chuunin > Jounin

*Two special ranks outside of this natural progression are Sennin and KazeKage

All shinobi of Sunagakure no Sato (and by extension all players) progress IC through the above ranks.

"But what if I join Medical/ANBU? Aren't those ranks part of the Main Branch?"

Main Branch has become a rather limiting and confusing label on this site. Think of it this way, Kakashi is an ANBU Captain but is also a Jounin. For our setting we are playing a subtle balance between IC and Out of Character (OOC). An example:

Shinobi Bob joins as an Academy Student. IC Rank: Academy Student of the Main Branch of Suna// OOC Rank: Academy Student and no benefits such as abilities befitting Main Branch

Shinobi Bob ranks up to Genin. IC Rank: Genin of the Main Branch of Suna // OOC Rank: Genin of the Main Branch (if he chooses not to join ANBU or Med) and the option to pick one of the Main Branch free abilities

Shinobi Bob is a Genin and decides to join ANBU. IC Rank: Genin of the Main Branch of Suna and ANBU in Training // OOC Rank: ANBU in Training, so his banner would change to reflect this and he would lose access to Main Branch free ability and gain access to ANBU free ability.

"Is there a reason you do it this way?"

Yes, it frees up some of the IC confusion that can and does happen. If Shinobi Bob is an ANBU, what is he considered when he takes off the mask? The way ANBU is set up, secrecy is important so simply calling him an ANBU in the open would place his character at risk IC. The same could be said with Medical Branch members, there may be times they are called to act in a combatant primary role. While they are a doctor at all times, they are also a member of this military unit so their rank outside of the health profession might come into play when determining different military roles or actions.

"Doesn't this limit or diminish the Main Branch role and those that choose to remain in it instead of going to the other Branches?"

Main Branch

As we just discussed, all of our shinobi are considered at the very baseline a member of Main Branch. So what about those dedicated souls that want to remain Main Branch and specialize in it? Well, here is the information you are craving!

Perks: OOC Access to Main Branch free abilities // IC choice of specialized profession
Requirements: Must be at least Genin and cannot be a member of ANBU or Medical Branch
Ranks: Ranks for banner will be Genin > Chuunin > Jounin

Specializations:

Sunagakure no Sato Police Force

The Sunagakure no Sato Police Force (SPF) is one-half of the judicial peacekeepers within the village, along with ANBU. The police force is the unmasked law enforcement of the village that will handle the bulk of the crimes of various degrees within the village. Within this specialization, you can find yourself in almost any police-related situation, from testing your keen skills as a detective to patrolling the streets of the village as a beat officer.

Border Defense Unit

The individuals tasked with protecting the borders of the village and the greater expanses of the country comprise the Border Defense Unit (BDU). The BDU are individuals that will monitor the gates, responding to those requesting entry, and will handle issues and tasks outward in Out of Village Zones (OV Zones) of Wind Country. A member of this unit can find themselves taking on roles of gate guarding, surveying work in the OV Zones or running aid to desert tribes and other villages/towns within the country that are unable to defend themselves.

Educational Support Unit

The Educational Support Unit (ESU) are those tasked with raising the current and future generations of shinobi of Suna. These individuals will serve as instructors in the academy, protectors of rank exams and facilitators of standard village missions. Within this specialization you can find yourself tutoring, teaching a class, facilitating a team mission or providing a Genin/Chuunin/Jounin exam.

Within the Main Branch, it is not required that you take on a specialization, in which case you'd simply comprise the infantry role of the Suna military force.

Advancing Rank

Advancing a rank on NC is a tricky balance of OOC and IC. The OOC side is outlined in the Ultimate Battle Rules, but the IC side has been rather loosely defined. The current rules for advancement in Suna, when dealing with IC Ranks, are as follows:

Main Branch

Advancement from Academy Student to Genin:

• Must successfully complete two [Class] threads.
• The character must be a "Student" in these classes.
• Request a Genin Exam upon completion of 2nd Class.
  • Genin Exams can either be fully modded thread or a self-modded solo post/thread of 500 words detailing your character's exam.
  • If the player fails their exam the player must wait 2 OoC weeks before requesting a new exam.
• Any Academy Student that reaches B Rank (OOC) will be automatically ranked up to Genin

Advancement from Genin to Chuunin:

• Must be Genin
• Complete 2 C Rank Missions.
• These Missions can be Modded or Self-Modded Team Missions or Modded Solo Missions.
• Complete 1 B Rank Mission.
  • This Mission can be Modded or Self-Modded Team Missions or Modded Solo Missions.
• Complete 1 [Class] thread
  • The character must be a "Student" in this class.
• Request a Chuunin Exam upon completing previously listed requirements.
  • Chuunin Exams can either be a fully modded thread or a solo post/thread of 800 words detailing your character's exam.
  • If the player fails their exam the player must wait 2 OoC weeks before requesting a new exam.
  • The player must wait at least 2 OoC weeks since the completion of their Genin Exam before requesting their Chuunin Exam.
• Any Genin that reaches S Rank (OOC) will be automatically ranked up to Chūnin

Advancement from Chuunin to Jounin:

• Must be Chuunin
• Complete 2 B Rank Missions.
  • These Missions can be Modded or Self-Modded Team Missions or Modded Solo Missions.
• Complete 1 A Rank Mission.
  • This Mission can be Modded or Self-Modded Team Missions or Modded Solo Missions.
• Complete 1 [Class] thread
  • The character must be a "Teacher" in this class.
• Request a Joinin Exam upon completing previously listed requirements.
  • Jounin Exams must be a modded exam conducted by a Sennin or the Kazekage.
  • If the player fails their exam the player must wait 2 OoC weeks before requesting a new exam.
  • The player must wait at least 2 OoC weeks since the completion of their Chuunin Exam before requesting their Jounin Exam.

Again, all characters have a Main Branch rank. If you are Medical or ANBU and decide to never IC rank up your Main Branch rank, then you could be a Genin/Medic-Nin or a Genin/ANBU. If you advanced to the final stage of your ANBU or Medical Rank (Captain or Chief) without ever IC ranking up your Main Branch rank, you could easily be a Genin/Medical Chief... and that is perfectly fine!
