Each ninja starts from the bottom and start their training as an Academy Student. From there they develop abilities akin to that of demigods as they grow in age and experience.

Along the way they gain new friends (or enemies), take on jobs and complete contracts and missions for their respective villages where their training and skill will be tested to their limits.

The sky is the limit as the blank page you see before you can be filled with countless of adventures with your character in the game.

This is Ninpocho Chronicles.

Takeshi stood outside of the gates to the forest of death, for once it seemed that recently it would be used for what it was supposed to be used for, that was simply put an examination, and for three of the Chuunin candidates that had managed to pass their current theory exam. So here they were, waiting for the exam to begin. Takeshi had made sure the instructions given to each of them was to arrive before the first light in the morning after all this was an exam to prove themselves ready to move up in the world, it wasn't supposed to be easy, the easy part was behind each of the three candidates this was where most people would fail.

His letter had been a simple one they would need everything they expected to require inside of a mission, to come prepared fully and don't be late. He pondered if that was too hard for even these guys to get but sighed to himself as he walked to the gate, letting the key come out of his pocket, he unlocked the huge metal gates that normally stopped anyone getting inside and swung them open gently to reveal the overgrown vegetation that had taken hold everywhere. Takeshi looked inside remembering his time back in there and wondered just how much of it had actually changed.

With the gates unlocked he had a small table with a few items prepared on it that they would be required to use for this exam, each one of the items would give them a small chance for what was about to come. As he leaned against the metal fence it was now a waiting game for all three of them to turn up and see if they were prepared for the next part of the exam.

Jirou went straight home after completing the first part of the chunin exam. He had no intention of staying up late knowing that he had to be up before dawn to make it to the Forest of Gate entrance early. There was no way he was going to show up late for that. There was too much at stake and he didn't want to risk the ire of the Lord Fourth by arriving late. After getting his clothes and gear laid out Jirou and Kashikoi ate a light dinner and went to bed not long afterwards. He never had any trouble getting to sleep. In fact as soon as his head hit the pillow he was pretty much out until he awoke the next morning. Tonight though he would set his alarm since he needed to be up before dawn and he wanted the time to take Kashikoi outside, get ready and eat breakfast before heading to the Forest of Death for the practical exam.

Jirou’s alarm rang which caused Jirou to quickly leave the warmth of his bed. Yawning he called Kashikoi to wake up. Seems the wolf still wanted to sleep longer. Not that he could blame him really. “Up and at ‘em Kashikoi. We have to be at the exam before sun up so let’s take you outside and get ready to go.” It was still dark outside when Jirou took Kashikoi out to do his business. Once they were done with the first order of business Jirou went back inside. He brushed his teeth and took a hot shower. Getting out of the shower Jirou wrapped the towel about his waist and went into his bedroom to get dressed. He never needed very long to get ready. After putting his pants and tunic on, Jirou tied his genin headband around his head. After that he equipped his holstered sword and chakra blade. His pouch held his tools and this he attached to his belt. Last but not least he pulled on his open toed boots and was ready to go. It was a routine he had repeated many times before and Jirou was not about to go there unprepared.

Heading downstairs he saw that Karasu's father, Hiro had prepared a good breakfast for them. He knew he would need the strength for what he might face during the exam. He drank the green tea and enjoyed the hearty breakfast of rice balls and eggs. Kashikoi inhaled his own breakfast and sat up looking for more. He nodded towards Hiro appreciatively, “Thank you for this. We really should be going now. Don’t want to be late.” He checks his pouch noting that he has the certificate. Hiro wishes them luck and watches from his wheelchair at the front door as they start off for the Forest of Death. Waving back at Hiro, Jirou and Kashikoi head off down the street for the Forest of Death entrance.

As they arrive at the gate they see that the gates are already open and the Lord Fourth is there waiting by a small table. Beyond the gate Jirou could see that the Forest of Death was overgrown and this contributed to an atmosphere of dark foreboding. Jirou knew that both he and Kashikoi would need to be very alert for any number of possible dangers they might face. Taking the certificate that showed he had passed the first part of the chunin exam from his pouch, Jirou approaches the Lord Fourth holding the certificate out for him to take. “Present and ready for the practical exam, Lord Fourth.” His eyes held a look of determination while he waited. This was part of his path to become Hokage and he took it very seriously.

Karasu went to bed last night in a good mood. She had passed the written test part of the Chuunin exam. Tomorrow would be the next part which was the practical exam. She had no idea what was in store. She knew she had to get a good night’s sleep. The letter from the Fourth Hokage was that they needed to be at the gates of the Forest of Death before the light of day. So sleep was in order for her so that she could be well rested and prepared for the exam. Her mind drifted as her head finally hit the pillow and her eyes closed drifting off dreaming of various things.

[Dream Sequence -

She was on a mission with Jirou, Kashikoi and Hinata. It was raining hard and they were outside the village in some place that was vaguely familiar. Sensing there were be enemies all around She gave hand signals to both Hinata and Jirou giving them an idea of where the enemies were hiding. Each of them were heading to various points so they wouldn’t be ambushed in one spot. They were spread out but still in range with each other. The enemies who were rogue ninja attacked them. The fight was on and Karasu’s team was acting insync. They were defeating the rogue ninja. Karasu’s heart was pumping fast as her mind was focused and sharp. She was about to strike the rogue ninja for the fatal blow when all of a sudden Kashikoi came leaping at her. Her eyes widened with confusion as the wolf pup went to pounce on her.

- End Dream Sequence]

Karasu woke up with a start as the alarm was beeping loudly. She shut it off quickly. “What kind of dream was that?” she said under her breath before getting up. She looked out the window and saw that it was still dark outside. The young Genin got out her clothes then took a shower. The water raining down on her felt good. It made her more alert. After drying herself off then putting on her clothes. She made sure the clothes were flexible and fit because she knew the Forest of Death will be no picnic. She brushed her long white hair then tied it up in a ponytail so that her hair wouldn’t be in her face. She put on her pouch and senbon launcher on her arm. She also had her katana ready as it was sheathed on her back. She grabbed her certificate and placed it in her pouch. Next was her headband showing she was a Leaf Shinobi. Once she was satisfied she turned to walk out her bedroom.

After she finished getting dressed her father was in the kitchen putting out the food for breakfast. “Hey there” he said with a smile. “Today is another big day and the most important. So I figure all of you kids need to keep your strength up.” She looked on the table and saw the rice balls and eggs along with several fruits. “Yes thank you I need to have food in me. I don’t want to lag behind because I didn’t have enough fuel.” she smiled then sat down and started eating. She ate quickly but not too fast. She also didn’t want to make herself too full. The last thing she needed was to have a stomach ache during the exam.

Karasu finished her food and said “I have to go wish me luck!” Her dad looked at her with pride on his face. “”Good luck angel. Remember to keep aware of your surroundings and trust your teammates. “ he smiled then gave her a hug and kiss. She smiled back and said “I will dad thanks.”

Once she got her open toe boots on she was off and running heading toward the gate. The village was eerily quiet in the early hours. She usually doesn’t walk around this time of the hour. She didn’t ask if Jirou, Kashikoi or Hinata had left yet. She knew they would be coming if they hadn’t left before her. She was so determined to become a Chuunin. This was her chance to continue on her path of being Hokage. Karasu was ready for anything that will be put upon her. All the hard work and there was still so much to learn and do. She wasn’t overly confident but she was determined.

She finally arrived at the Forest of Death. She saw Lord Fourth at the gates which were open. There was a table nearby with items on it. She could see the overgrown vegetation inside the forest. Karasu saw that Jirou and Kashikoi arrived before her. She waved at them before heading to Lord Fourth. She reached for her theory certificate to show that she had passed the first part of the exam.

“Nakano Karasu reporting for the practical exam, Lord Fourth” she said with her eyes ready to go.

Takeshi sat there with the water canteen in his hand as he took a swig from it, he looked towards the two that approached and nodded towards them. It seemed that he would be the one to give these two the exam that they had been prepared for, as he leaned back slightly on the bench he looked towards the gates and the huge tree inside of the village. This place was considered off-limits by most people but it always had a purpose during examination for students and he knew full well that this exam would not be an easy one of them.

"Good morning both of you, well I guess we will get this last part of the exam underway, this bit is slightly more challenging than what you're used to, as it's all about your inner demons and outer ones as well. So shall we get things underway, as I am going to stay out there, you must face what is inside alone and let me tell you this exam is what you make of it, I expect you to come out of this forest as squad leaders, prepared, ready for what the world brings"

Takeshi pulled himself up fully as he looked towards them a small smile on his lips, grabbing the two backpacks he put them down in front of the two exam participants, they looked quite full actually compared to what would be expected and Takeshi knew that they would be well provided for, but the next part of this little exam was not something he expected either of them to like, but they would have to do it and go forward. This exam was about being able to stand in the hardest situations even if those situations were something that they would be having to fight with when leading teams, when serving the village.

"This backpack has enough supplies for three days, you will be expected to be out of the forest by that time, any longer and you will be risking your own self. That said use these rations wisely and make sure that you use that keyword for this, rations. Running out in there will not be a good idea at all. The next part is this drug, simply put at the center of the forest, somewhere on the tree is the antidote to this injection, within fifteen minutes of giving you this you will start hallucinating, feeling paranoid and it will heighten all your doubts within yourself. Simply put this drug will make everything in the forest sem out to get you, even your friends sometimes. This will push your mind to the very point of breaking, so I suggest within the three days you try and get to that tree."

Takeshi took out two small injections as he walked towards the two Genin, first up was Jirou as he placed the injection into the boy's arm and pressed the liquid inside, nodding towards the boy he knew that this was the moment for both of them to expand. Finally, as he walked over towards Karasu and injected her as well, with both of them now under a timer and with only fifteen minutes to get started on the exam he wondered how much they really would be able to deal with. Stepping back he looked to both of them his hand outstretched towards the entrance of the Forest.

"Your three days start now, good luck and do your best, remember your mind will be as much an enemy as this forest will. Overcome, push yourselves and come back to the gates, after three days if you are still inside I will come to hunt you down."

Jirou and Kashikoi approached the table where Takeshi was seated. They were here and he would be lying to himself if he didn’t admit that he was not somewhat nervous about what they were to face in the Forest of Death. He had no idea just what Takeshi was going to throw at them. He felt eager for the opportunity to show what he could do. How bad could it be anyway? He needed to use what he had available to him and take each challenge as it came. As Takeshi started explaining the parameters of the chunin exam, Jirou listened and absorbed every word. When he heard that this was a trial where they each must face their inner and outer demons, Jirou wondered to himself what the outer demons would consist of. The Lord Fourth did not elaborate further instead standing up and preparing for them to get underway. Jirou knew that he had to remain alert and prepared for whatever came at him. He had to stay calm and keep focused if he and Kashikoi were to emerge from this trial as chunin.

Takeshi was very clear in his expectations of them. He expected them “to come out of this forest as squad leaders, prepared, ready for what the world brings.” Jirou took those words to heart and was determined not to let him down. He looked at Kashikoi and said, “We have to stay sharp, boy. We have no idea what we are going to face in there.” Kashikoi let out a yip in answer to Jirou’s words, excited to get started. Both of them were ready to get underway. The backpacks were for them as Takeshi placed a backpack before both Jirou and Karasu explaining that the supplies were enough to last the next several days. They were advised to make the supplies last. Otherwise each of them would be in serious trouble. Jirou hoped that they could complete the test before their supplies ran out.

It was the next part of what Takeshi said that made his jaw drop open in surprise. They were tasked with finding the antidote to an injection that they were each going to receive. The antidote was to be found on a tree that was located at the center of the Forest of Death. As this was explained, Jirou started planning out a strategy in his mind. That is until he heard about what this injection would do to them starting fifteen minutes after they receive it. Hallucinations, paranoia and self-doubt is what they had to look forward to. Oh great. They had to get to the tree in a fight against not only outer demons but the forces within their own minds. Jirou had expected to be challenged by this exam. He didn’t know that he was going to be facing all these challenges while under the influence of a drug. He would need to find a way to stay focused. They just had to make it through this test. This drug would affect his mind so he would need to rely on his instincts to drive him forward. His jaw was set in determination as he stepped forward ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead. Jirou was not one to turn away from destiny and he was not about to let some drug stand in his way from becoming chunin. He had to be strong and endure this just like he endured leaping into the rushing waters with Kashikoi on the day that his village was attacked. They had survived that and they would survive this too.

He heard the voice of his Jinchuriki spirit speaking to him, “We will do this together.” Jirou nodded and stepped forward to receive his shot, “We won’t let you down, sir.” Jirou rolled his sleeve up to expose his arm. Kashikoi let out a low growl towards Takeshi ready to bite him if he gives Jirou that shot. Kashikoi hated shots and he hated those who gave shots even more. Hearing the response from Kashikoi, Jirou explained. “I know I don’t like it either but this is all part of the chunin exam. We need to trust each other.” Kashikoi made a face and backed away from Takeshi, staying just out of his reach. He didn’t like it one bit but he did trust Jirou. He watched Takeshi give the injection to Jirou. The shot was quick and felt like no more than a pin prick. Jirou knew that they did not have any time to waste. Lifting the backpack up he put his arms through the straps and fastened the strap across his chest. His sheathed sword was attached to his belt as was his chakra blade and tool pouch. He was ready to go as he looked to Kashikoi, “We need to get going, boy. Let’s go.” Turning towards Karasu, Jirou offers her a broad smile, “Be careful in there, shuriken girl. See you at the tree.” Together they started off through the gates into the Forest of Death beyond to face their destiny.

Karasu started to walk up toward where Takeshi is. She was all ready for whatever they had in store. At least she hoped she was. She had confidence in herself and knew that this was her moment to show what she had. She was excited yet focused on whatever Takeshi threw at her. Karasu nodded toward Takeshi as he greeted them. Lord Fourth started to explain the next challenge for the Chuunin exam. Karasu listened intently not wanting to miss a single thing. He mentioned the practical was about their inner demons and outer ones too. Karasu tilted her head wondering what he meant by that. She continued to listen to get more of an understanding. The Fourth Hokage didn’t say anything more on the subject and instead was ready to get them started on the task at hand. It made Karasu wonder what they would face in the Forest of Death that would make them face their inner and outer demons. Whatever it was she needed to be on high alert and completely focused.

Takeshi was not going to be inside the Forest of Death which made sense to Karasu. He said the exam was what we make of it and must face it alone. He expected for them to come out as squad leaders as Chuunin. Karasu’s thoughts once again started to imagine wild creatures attacking them. A true Chuunin would know how to get out of it unscathed. She nodded “Right!” she said showing a strong determination in her big blue eyes. She watched as Takeshi had a smile on his lips while grabbing two backpacks. The backpacks looked very packed as if there were several days' supplies in it. She figured it was for both her and Jirou and that it should have everything they would possibly need in the Forest of Death. She also had her pouch on her as well, so she felt she would be well prepared as far as supplies go. She just hoped they didn’t have to stay in there long.

Indeed the backpacks were meant for them as Takeshi went on to say that they were expected to be in the Forest of Death for three days and the rations in the backpacks would last that long only. After that would be risking their lives so he encouraged them to use their rations wisely. Karasu nodded with agreement. “Yes Sir” she said then listened as Takeshi continued on. What Karasu heard came as a total shock to her. She blinked rapidly then shook her head “What?” her voice said in a high pitched tone. Takeshi mentioned that they were being drugged and in the center of the Forest of Death was the antidote.

Karasu’s eyes grew bigger than ever as she listened to what the exam really had to entail. The drug apparently starts to work in fifteen minutes after injection. Afterwards they were going to start hallucinating and feeling paranoid which would make their senses even more heightened. Karasu knew that being drugged would make things far more difficult. Not only is the Forest of Death already a very dangerous place, but to not have their wits about them and being under the influence of a drug would make most people fail if not turn away from such a situation. Karasu understood that this was the true test and only those who had the strength and determination to go forward were worthy to become Chuunin. She would face this test and any other because she was not going to let some stupid drug and its effects to stop her becoming a Chuunin.

“Yes sir I understand.” she said ready to do what must be done. There was no looking back. She waited as Jirou had to get his injection first. She saw the agitation of Kashikoi when Jirou was getting his shot and understood what the wolf pup must be feeling. She also wondered what was going through Jirou's mind about all of this. He was probably just as focused as she was knowing him. Now it was her turn to get the injection. She walked up toward Takeshi and pulled up her shirt sleeve to reveal her arm. There she felt the prick of the needle that entered her skin. It was quick and painless but of course it would be. It was the after effects that worried Karasu. She hoped it wouldn’t be too bad but the sound of it made her assume the worst. She put on the backpack ready to set off thinking on strategy to get the antidote.

Takeshi outstretched his arms and wished them good luck while also telling them that after three days if we haven’t come back with the antidote he would come hunting for us. Karasu understood and didn't want to think of what could happen after three days. She was going to focus to her best ability and strength on finding that antidote. She didn’t want to stay in the Forest of Death any longer than necessary. She turned to Jirou and Kashikoi. She gave a small smile toward her friends and said. “Good luck.” She smiled as Jirou called her shuriken girl. That was his nickname he gave her the first time they met. She nodded before stepping inside forest gates alongside them.

The Jinchuriki spirit within Jirou was not remaining silent or about to let some drug get into the boy’s bloodstream without a fight. Before the injection had even penetrated Jirou’s arm, Raiden was already advising him inside his head. “You are going to need to slow your breathing. I will be using my chakra to slow the toxin from spreading. This will not eliminate the effects just lessen them. Use the cloak to add protection.” Jirou was already taking action and generating the elemental cloak around his body. This he hoped would help to protect him from some of the damaging effects of the drug. He knew he had to get to the tree. Closing his eyes he lets his senses expand and takes in the smells and sounds to get an idea of the direction to follow saying to Kashikoi as well, “We need to get to the tree and get the antidote. I am going to need you to help me as well.” Kashikoi is walking after Jirou guarding him protectively, since he was able to smell a difference in Jirou. He was also quite determined to bite Takeshi next time he saw him.

The sun had already started rising and there was a breeze rustling through the trees as they walked down the path deeper into the Forest of Death. Fifteen minutes was not very long and they had supplies that had to last them for several days. He was aware that Kashikoi was walking right beside him looking at him ever so often. It was quiet so far, though he knew that would not last. The animals were waking up and with them their hunger. They would be hunting soon and he did not want to be their breakfast. His senses were on full alert. Every sound and scent held the potential for danger. This was going to be a very long day and now he was starting to feel nauseous. Was that one of the effects of the drug? It had to be because he hardly ever felt nauseous. While walking Jirou looked over towards Karasu and asked, “Are you all right over there? Maybe we should have a code word to say to each other every so often. Something simple like Nindō said at regular intervals.”

Jirou remembered the cautioned warning from Takeshi, “...within fifteen minutes you will start hallucinating, feeling paranoid and it will heighten all your doubts within yourself. Simply put this drug will make everything in the forest seem out to get you, even your friends sometimes. This will push your mind to the very point of breaking, so I suggest within the three days you try and get to that tree.” The drug would push our own minds to the breaking point. He understood that the village wanted to see just how much they could take before breaking down. This was their test and he was determined to get through this without breaking. After all he aspired to be Hokage one day. He had to use all of his resourcefulness and strength to push himself past his limits.

Keep moving forward and don’t stop. That was his focus as they followed the trail before them. Kashikoi yipped at Jirou as he foraged ahead, having gotten a scent of something. Jirou lowered down to all fours and sniffed at the air letting his instincts take over. There was something ahead and they needed to be ready. He looked over and said as much to Karasu. Kashikoi’s hackles were raised and he was snarling. He had the scent as well. Jirou knew that he had to fight through this feeling of nausea. So far he hadn’t experienced any hallucinations. The Jinchuriki cloak seemed to be slowing the effects of the drug that was making its way through his system. They had to keep going and get to the tree at the center of the forest. They had to fight past all the obstacles that got in their way. Jirou knew very well that there were many savage creatures that would see them as tasty morsels for their lunch. He was not about to be on their menu. This was about survival of the fittest. The Law of the Wild was kill or be killed. This is the way. It is a way that he understood all too well.

It was still early morning and the sun was finally rising. The rays could be seen shining through the trees making several spotlights on patches of the forest floor. So far the effects of the drug were not in effect. This means she needed to do what she could to get the antidote while there was still time before the drug took effect. She knew she had to get to the center but how far the center was she had no idea. She was pretty sure it wasn’t so close that she could be there before the drug started to work. She wondered how much more time she had then it hit her ………..TIME. She looked at Jirou to see if he was acting funny yet but it must be still too early. That means the fifteen minutes were not up. Maybe she could manipulate time to see how far they had to go to get to the center.

It was tricky and she only did it a few times. She had the ability to enter the past or future and see what had or will happen. It could lead to some information for her but if she did do it she needed to do it quickly before the drug kicked in. Karasu took only a moment before changing her mind on using the ability. If she did it now it may weaken her a bit and that will not be to her advantage. So she will have to just grit through it hoping that she could get to the antidote sooner than later. She glanced toward Jirou and Kashikoi. They were all in this together and she wanted all of them to succeed in being Chuunin. At Least she had some rations which she will make sure she didn’t use too much so it could last.

Everything seemed to be quiet other than the sound of nature all around. The wind was light and breezy as she walked alongside them. Her mind was going a mile a minute wondering how to combat the drug then she remembered her training. She had learned Medical Ninjutsu. It was possible for her to reduce the effects enough to be able to at least be able to function just enough to complete this exam. She was starting to feel a little woozy so she knew she had to hurry. She also wanted to aid Jirou as well. She focused all her chakra to have a good even amount in her hand which started to glow and placed in on her chest. The drug would have carried itself through her body so her chest was the best center point for the Medical Ninjutsu. It was the System Shock technique. Karasu could feel the small currents of electricity throughout her body as it tried to break down any toxins that the drug had infused in her.

She figured she couldn’t make it all go away because that would take too much of a toll on her, but if she can just make the drug effects lessen that would help. She stopped the technique on herself so that she had enough chakra to help Jirou. She looked over at her friend then remembered about his own special ability. He had a Jinchuuriki spirit within him that may be able to help him with the drug effects. She remembered seeing the cloak of the spirit on a mission they had. She had read about this type of ability before but she didn’t know at the time her friend had possessed that type of ability.

“I assume your spirit form inside you can help you with the drug in your system. If not I can help you though I admit if I do the Medical Ninjutsu on you too it will give me less chakra to work with battling nature’s elements here in the forest as well as the remaining effects of the drug.” she pointed out.

As she said this she could feel the drug effects still in her body. She would have to live with it for the time and being. It still can hamper but not as much since she was able to reduce the toxins. Kashikoi appeared to have four ears which means that she was seeing extra parts of him and everything around her. “Well that’s not good. I am seeing double but I believe I can still get through everything. We need to keep going no matter what. The further we get to the center the better off we will be.” Though she was seeing double of things she felt confident enough that she could handle getting through the exam.

The forest has its own dangers and Karasu saw that the wolf pup may have sensed something. She was on high alert already even more so with the drug effects. She knew with all the different types of animals here in the Forest especially the larger ones they would be looked at as food or an enemy. It was the nature of things and Karasu would do her best to not allow anything to deter her from her goal. Even though she and Jirou were on this exam individually she knew it was best to treat this as a team mission. She could easily go on her own but she would never leave anyone behind.

As the day wore on the trio continued walking ever deeper into the Forest of Death. They were now in unfamiliar territory and it became increasingly necessary to grow eyes in the back of their heads. They needed to be aware of everything. The toxin that had been injected into his arm had been slowed in its progress throughout his body by his Jinchuriki. That didn’t stop the fact that there were still effects that were now beginning to show themselves. Jirou understood that he needed to stay ahead of the effects as best as he could. He was determined to get through this and become a chunin.

Kashikoi could smell the pack of hyena’s that were closing in on them. Jirou had sensed while they were walking that they had become the watched. He could hear the sound of many footfalls closing in on them. Looking over towards Karasu he says quietly, “We have company. Stay alert.” Jirou knew that his senses were about a third what they normally were. He had to look over at Kashikoi and rely on his senses to get an idea of what they were facing. Kashikoi was snarling and standing his ground. The hyena’s were having none of it. Lunch had arrived and they were fixed on one goal only. A boy, a wolf and a small appetizer sized girl would feed the pack well. The pack continued closing in on the trio and Jirou understood that they would need to deal carefully with the beasts. They were after all only doing what nature had programmed them to do. Nature had programmed them with deadly efficiency.

Jirou still felt nauseous but not enough to throw up. At least not yet. Still it was a very uncomfortable and distracting feeling. He motioned for Kashikoi to stay close and focused his attention on generating a Shielding Tempest with both of his hands extended. He had to rely on his own instincts and Kashikoi to fend the pack off. As each of the hyenas closed in they would get a shock when they made contact with the shield. Jirou moved in a circle bringing the shielding tempest with him. He looked over towards Karasu to see how she was faring. The hyenas were relentless as they dodged in and out trying to get past the barrier. Kashikoi had three of the hyenas snarling and snapping as they tried to bring the wolf down. Kashikoi answered back by throwing them off one at a time. The wolf in all his savagery then got one of the hyenas by the throat and bit through the jugular of the animal. Blood sprayed everywhere. The rest of the hyenas yipped and ran back into the forest. Jirou called out to the wolf once the hyenas had scattered.

Jirou looked like a refugee from a bad slasher movie. His clothes and face were splattered with blood. He had not been hurt, though he double checked himself to be sure. Looking over to Karasu he offered her a hand asking, “Are you hurt?” It was already late afternoon based on the location of the sun up in the sky. They would need to think of where they should camp for the night. Whatever the decision he knew that it was going to be a very long night against the predators of the forest. “We should think about making camp before the sun sets. The danger will be increased many times with the fall of night. Many predators thrive and are the most active after the sun goes down. I don’t want us to be caught unprepared. We will need time to plan out a defense. It will be a very long night and those hyenas or something else will probably be paying us a visit.”

Continuing along the path Jirou comes to a smaller trail that leaves the path they were on. He decides to follow this smaller trail for a short distance when the trail opens into a small clearing surrounded by trees. They could defend this and it was not very far from the main path. Taking his backpack off his shoulders, he opens it up and gets to the business of setting up camp, “Kashikoi, I need you to check out the surrounding trees and bushes. Keep watch, boy while camp gets set up.” The sun was going down fast and there was a small window of time to set up camp for the night. Besides, Jirou was still feeling very nauseous only now the nausea was accompanied by a new sensation of dizziness. He felt like he wanted to throw up, yet he wasn’t able to just yet. He needed to sit down before he fell down. The forest was spinning.

Pushing through his discomfort he finished setting up camp gathering firewood for a fire to keep them warm. The sky had become overcast in a remarkably short period of time. Jirou could smell that there was a storm coming. They needed to get to the tree where the antidote was. Sitting down after having started the fire, Jirou took out a rice ball and some water. He was not particularly hungry, but he knew that he and Kashikoi needed to eat. After Kashikoi had his share of food he came over and laid down near the fire, his eyes looking up at Jirou. It was that kind of look that said, ‘Are you going to eat that? Because if you aren’t…’ The fact was Jirou was not at all hungry and he ended up giving Kashikoi half of his meal. Looking across the fire at Karasu he volunteered, “I will keep the first watch. You should get some sleep.” Jirou then started to move to the edge of camp to keep watch. Kashikoi stood up and sat on Jirou, not letting him move. Jirou tried to move but the wolf seemed particularly heavy at the moment. Jirou finally relented, admitting to himself that he was too tired to argue with Kashikoi. “All right you keep first watch then. Wake me up though.” Kashikoi stood up and seemed to nod trotting to the edge of camp where he kept sentry duty.

With all the sounds that were in the Forest of Death a snarling growling sound could be heard in the near distance that was approaching. She looked over to see Kashikoi snarling and at the ready to whatever was coming closer. Then she heard what seemed like a sort of whining type of laughing sound. Karasu wasn’t sure at first what it could be until several four legged beasts started to surround all of them. “Hyenas!” Karasu said as the huge pack separated into two groups. One with Jirou and Kashikoi and the other with Karasu. Now Karasu was already seeing two sets of ears on Kashikoi. With the Hyenas she was seeing the same. So it made it seem like the pack doubled on her but she knew it was the drug effects. She wishes she had enough time to use the Medical technique to reduce more of the drug effects, but it is what it is and it would have been worse if she hadn’t used it at all.

She saw a barrier go up as the other pack closed in on Jirou and Kashikoi but had no time to relax because she had her own pack. Even though she was surrounded and her eyes were seeing double, Karasu’s mind was thinking fast on what she could do to the pack that started to slowly close in on her. She understood she couldn’t go in charging. There were just too many of them and they would pounce on her leaving her trying to pry them off her. She needed something that could trap them all or some and take care of the rest. It wasn’t going to be easy because of the condition she was in but she had to try to do something.

Thinking the best way to accomplish this is to use the resources around her. A smile crept upon her mouth when she knew exactly what she was going to do. The pack of Hyenas were drooling as if they were in for a treat. There was no way she was going to be the food for some dumbass dogs. She could tell the Hyenas were about to charge on her but Karasu had other ideas. She waited until they were close enough before she bent down to touch the ground. “Earth Flow River” she said as she created the hand signs before she actually touched the ground.

A stream of mud started to flow where the pack of Hyenas were. She could hear the growling and signature howls from the vicious beasts before they realized that something wasn’t right. They started to whine as if they were hurt but they were not harmed. Instead they were struggling to get their paws out of the mud as if they were glued into it. Karasu knew they would probably get out so the best solution was not to harm them but to get them to retreat from the area. The Hyenas probably knew they got more than they bargained for and wondered how the tables had turned on them.

Karasu did some hand signs then said “Infernal Ember.” Sparks of small flames shot out from her mouth toward the Hyenas who were just finally getting out of the mud. With loud yelps the double visioned pack that Karasu saw started to run with their tails between their legs. She watched as the Hyenas ran away then looked to see that the pack that was with Jirou and Kashikoi was leaving too. She heard Jirou ask her if she was hurt.

“No I am not but I think we will have more visitors too. We should keep moving.“

She saw that Jirou looked worse than he was by the state of his clothes. “I guess that isn’t your blood on your clothes.” she said with a smirk. It was more of a statement than a question. The day was already late afternoon and the sun would be going down not too long after. She agreed they needed to set camp soon.

“Yes we do need to set camp before the sun sets. Somewhere that can give us some cover.” She looked up and saw some clouds coming in. The wind was breezy still and she figured it maybe possible that the weather may change. “I think we may have to battle the weather too from the looks of it. Hopefully it won’t be too bad. Either way it’s going to be cold tonight.”

She followed the long path along with Jirou and Kashikoi until they found a small trail. The double Kashikoi’s leading the way. They ended up following the small trail to a spot that was perfect to set up camp. “This looks good here.” She started to help set up camp even setting traps on the outside just to be prepared for anything that tries to come near them at night. The wind picked up slightly as she took out some food that she had made. She unpacked a pork bun that she had and ate it up quickly. It tasted good like she hadn’t had a meal in like forever. She yawned as now it was really dark out and the tree branches were swaying back and forth. The night was getting colder and all Karasu could think of was getting under the blanket she had brought. She hoped it would keep her warm especially with the coldness in the air that gave her goosebumps on her arm. Jirou told her he would keep the first watch. She nodded “Alright no problem.” she wasn’t even going to argue about it. She just wanted to get some sleep. It had been a long day and she wanted to make sure she had enough rest for the next day. Before she fell asleep she thought she saw the shadows around her move. She looked again but saw nothing and thought it was her tiredness getting the best of her. She fell asleep hoping the next day they could finally get to their main destination.

While Kashikoi was actively patrolling the perimeter of the camp, Jirou fell into a deep sleep quickly. He entered a dream world where the toxin in his body manifested into a series of monsters to fight. Outwardly he slept restlessly, his limbs thrashing and attempting to kick off the monsters he was fighting off in his dreams. His Jinchuriki spirit was there and the two battled to slow the progress of the toxin. As the fight wore on Jirou became aware that he was feverish. It was his body’s natural response attempting to burn the toxin out.

This toxin had been matched to Jirou’s own DNA. All attempts to slow and reduce it would ultimately be fruitless. The antidote was the only means to combat it and return each of them to normal. They were running out of time.

Jirou had broken into a fevered sweat during his restless sleep. By the time he awoke his tunic was plastered to his skin. The sun had not yet risen though he realized that he had slept through most of the night. It looked to be about five in the morning based on the position of the moon that was starting to set. Getting to his feet he went to relieve himself and in the process also threw up. The relief that he felt was immense if only for a short while. He also watered a nearby bush with what was very likely the longest pee ever. Afterwards he returned to the camp. Taking another shirt from his backpack, Jirou changed his shirt into one that was dry and clean. There was a serious storm brewing and the wind was really blowing. There were several branches that had been blown down while he slept. The fire had gone out during the night likely due to the high winds and drizzle. Kashikoi had laid down with his head on his front paws, while watching the camp. Kashikoi lifted his head when he saw Jirou come over to him and sit down beside him, Jirou smiled and after petting him behind his ears said, “That’s a good boy. You get some rest. I will keep watch.” Jirou did not want to go back to sleep. He did not want to see the images that awaited him behind his eyes. Staying awake was far better in his mind.

The wind was really blowing and he knew that the next leg of the journey was going to be the most difficult yet. It was only a matter of time before the storm clouds would burst forth. Looking over towards Karasu he watched her sleep hoping that her sleep was not as awful as his was. Jirou took out a rice ball and started to eat it. He hoped that it would stay down, since he knew that he would need to keep his strength up for the coming day. Drinking water from his canteen he had not realized just how thirsty he was. Looking up at the tree branches as they blew back and forward he saw the shadows appearing to leap forward and shrink back. He had to close his eyes using his other senses instead to keep watch. Fortunately day was breaking and this infernal night would soon be behind them. They just had to make it through to the tree where the antidote was. The sounds of animals filled the night and he thought he could hear the sound of the hyena pack in the distance. From the sound of it they had made a kill and were enjoying the meal they had taken down. In the meantime he was wide awake and ready to get back on the trail. He started to pack away his supplies doing an inventory while he waited for Karasu to awake.

About an hour later it was time to get back on the trail. Jirou made sure the camp was completely broken down. It had been a very long night and he was ready to get moving. “We need to get moving. I would like to get to that tree before the storm fully hits. This area is prone to flash flooding. Things could be very difficult on the way back.” Jirou closes his eyes muttering to himself, “Those are just shadows. It’s the wind.” Kashikoi barked at Jirou and nudged him forward. Kashikoi took the lead nose to the ground like the protective wolf that he was. They started forward and it was not long before they were back on the main trail strewn as it was with broken branches. The trees were swaying in the fierce winds while the darkened skies hung ominously overhead.

Jirou and Kashikoi made their way along the trail, his eyes looking to the trees for possible dangers to spring out after them. Everything he saw and heard seemed to be exaggerated. Jirou saw exaggerated faces in the patterns of the trees. He could not be certain what was real and what was an effect of the drug that was coursing through his body. Only his sense of smell remained as yet unaffected and that had picked up on the scents of moss and mint. Kashikoi lifted his nose in the air picking up on the scents ahead, Jirou thought that he heard the croaking from a chorus of frogs. That usually meant that they were approaching a body of water like a lake or a pond. This was the way to go and after several hours of following the trail, Jirou had to wonder what they would face next. He kept himself focused on getting to the tree. He needed the antidote. The wind was really fierce and for every three steps forward they were pushed backwards two steps. It was slow going and this was the worst storm ever. At least he didn’t hear the hyenas anymore. Unlike them they had likely hunkered down to wait out the storm. Animals frequently showed that they had far more sense than humans. Even without the hyenas Jirou could not escape the feeling that they were being watched. He was nauseous and everything was spinning around him. His senses were being overloaded with sights and sounds making it a chore to keep moving forward. If Karasu looked over and saw him, she would be able to see that he was clearly struggling. He had a pained look on his face as he struggled against both the winds and the insidious effects of the toxin that was coursing through his system. He had to keep going though. He couldn’t stop if he had any chance to pass this test. He was not about to let some stupid toxin keep him from becoming chunin.

In camp the fire had gone out due to the wind which picked up. It was blowing heavily now and Karasu laid under her blanket trying to keep warm. She was asleep but having a restless night. The toxin in her body was becoming stronger the longer she had it in her, which made her dreams more like nightmares. She tossed and turned all night dreaming of bright distorted creatures all around her hunting her. She had laid traps around hoping to entangle the creatures in it and to hopefully stop pursuing her. The sounds that they were making were the same as the Hyenas that she fought yesterday. They were also taunting her trying to intimidate her in various ways. Karasu was talking in her sleep.

The young Genin was standing her ground as the bright creatures were able to avoid the traps. They surrounded her and somehow grew larger in size. She looked like an ant compared to the bright creatures. Karasu fought hard with her sword trying to get each creature to back off. She even did various jutsu but nothing seemed to be working. Everything went right through the creatures as if they were not of physical form. They had her surrounded and were ready to pounce. All of a sudden Karasu saw one of the gigantic creatures pick her up and swallow her down its mouth. She was consumed and fell down inside the body landing in what seemed like some sort of liquid substance that didn’t allow her to move. It reminded her of her jutsu that she did against the Hyenas. The sticky substance had a hold of her and Karasu tried to tear away from it but it was no use. She was unable to get out. She could hear the laughter and taunting all around. Karasu covered her ears and yelled out.

“SHUT UP!”

She woke with a start, the blanket now off her and the cold and wind hitting her hard. She rubbed her arms trying to warm herself. It was still early in the morning and the sun had not risen but it was due anytime now. Drizzle was falling down onto the ground as the wind blew furiously. She knew a storm was coming in and they would be right smack in it. She started to get up and check all her supplies. She ate a rice ball for her morning breakfast then started to pack things for the rest of the journey toward the tree in the center. She saw that Jirou and Kashikoi were up. ‘Guess she didn't have to keep watch. ‘ she thought to herself. She was exhausted as if she didn’t sleep at all. She knew they had some ways away to get to the center but they were closer than ever. From her estimate they should be able to reach it by late afternoon if they can withstand the storm.

Karasu looked out toward the forest and saw the shadows again just like she did before she went to sleep. She had hoped it was just her being tired. Of course she was still tired and she knew the drug effects were still in her system. The shadows looked menacing and she hoped they kept their distance. She went toward the perimeter of the camp and picked up her traps. Looks like they were lucky that none of the animals were caught in it, which made for an uneventful night. She knew that the day would not be like that at all.

The shadows were watching her from tree to tree. Karasu kept alert and hoped she was not confronted. She remembered her dream and really hoped that it didn’t come true. She didn’t know if the shadows were in her mind or were real. Either way they needed to find the antidote as soon as possible. This drug was enough to drive anyone crazy. Jirou and Kashikoi were ready to go and Karasu walked alongside them. They travelled down the road and Karasu kept looking at the shadows for they were following her.

The weather was getting worse and the rain started to fall a bit harder. She has been through a storm like this before and that time it took all her strength just to walk through it. This storm was acting like it was going to be similar. She continued on to the trail still remaining alert. In her mind there were whispers calling her name. She did her best to ignore them. She walked on waiting for anything creature or not to come out at them.

“Karasuuuuuuuuu”

She heard the voice in the wind as the shadows continued to follow as if planning something. She remained focused as best she could with her hand ready to grab a weapon if anything jumped out. The shadows kept talking to her as she saw them as very distorted. The trees didn’t help either because it made the shadows even more creepy looking than ever.

“Karasuuuuuuuuu”

She winced when she heard the voices. She wanted to yell at the shadows but she knew that it would make her sound crazy. She gritted her teeth and kept going. The rain was falling harder now along with the heavy wind which made it hard for her to walk straight. She pushed forward trying not to look at the shadows. She glanced at Kashikoi who was prodding along but that didn’t help her much since there were two Kashikoi’s she was seeing. Everything just felt as if things were closing in on her. The voices were calling her trying to get in her mind. She shook her head a few times trying to get the voices out of her head.

In her mind she was hoping that they were getting close to the center. This drug was getting stronger with the effects. Karasu knew that all the voices she heard and the shadows were from the drug. She was trying to keep steady but it was hard with the storm as well. She purposely kept her mind focused straight ahead of her. She couldn’t see how Jirou was doing because of how strong the wind and rain was. She couldn’t wait till they found the antidote.

As Jirou continued on he was feeling the toll that the toxin was taking on his body. He knew that after this he was going to need a long sleep. The journey was arduous enough to now also make progress against the strong winds that now seemed to drain his strength away as they blew past. It seemed to him as though time itself had slowed. Over the course of several hours they continued on like this. He did not know how long they were walking. This was one of the worst storms Jirou had ever seen. Kashikoi looked back at Jirou who was urging him to keep moving forward.

Jirou had no idea how much time had passed before they finally reached the edge of a very large lake. He could see that there was what looked like a small island in the middle of the lake. He could see that there were several trees on the island, but one tree was significantly larger than the others. That had to be the tree where the antidote was. At least he hoped it was. Now they just had to get there across the water that was pretty turbulent from the wind that was agitating it. “Looks like that island is where we need to go. We can do this, Kashikoi. Just like in Nao’s water walking class we were in.” Jirou took a moment to prepare. Not only would he need to walk across the turbulent water, but he would need to do so with his senses altered. Jirou and Kashikoi would act as one following their instincts together. It would be the only way to stay focused for what he had to do. “All right we can do this.”

As soon as he stepped out onto the water Jirou felt himself engulfed in a thick fog. He thought he heard Karasu’s voice, but he couldn’t find her scent. It was only because of their link that he knew where Kashikoi was. He wasn’t sinking yet, but he could see nothing, He could barely see his hand before his face. If that was not enough he became aware that the fog had a distinct odor of sulfur. His already acute sense of smell was being overcome by the smell of dead skunk and rotten eggs. His eyes watered as he sought out Kashikoi, finally finding him in the mist. His senses were rendered useless and he relied on the guidance from Kashikoi to lead him out of this stinky pea soup fog.

As he slowly made his way forward moving up and down with the waves, he became aware that there was something ahead of him. He couldn’t make out the shape, but he did hear the words that seemed to come at him for all directions, “YOU HAVE FAILED!” He tried to find the source of the voice. The words went up in chorus from many voices as his unworthiness and failure echoed through the fog. “You will NEVER be the Hokage! You are UNWORTHY! You will always be UNWORTHY!”

Jirou went down on all fours looking for the source as he shouted, “No it is not true. I WILL BE HOKAGE!”

The voice called back, “How can you protect a village when you could not even save your own family from death?”

Jirou was shaken when he saw through the mist the images of that horrible day when his parents were murdered by bandits. The vision was crystal clear and he heard the screams of his parents. He shouted back, “My family are not dead. They live inside me. They will always be here inside me.” He says this while pointing to his heart. “Who are you?”

The voice laughs and in a booming voice that agitates the water even more than it already was, “I AM DEATH! YOUR DEATH!” The Phantom lifts the water up to form a giant wave and sends it to drown Jirou.

Kashikoi looked back and saw that Jirou was in trouble. A tidal wave was headed straight for Jirou. Through their bond Kashikoi let him know where he was surfing down the waves. Kashikoi didn’t have any toxin to deal with and he was not seeing or hearing what Jirou was seeing, hearing and smelling. Jirou used his speed to run up the crest of the wave and surfed down the wave, staying just ahead of the tidal wave. This was the moment of truth as he turned trying to get a fix on the voice. “I WILL BE HOKAGE!,” he shouted back. Drawing his katana he channeled chidori through the blade shouting the challenge, “FACE ME!” He still saw no form, only the infernal fog. He knew he had to be careful or he might strike Kashikoi or Karasu. That was not something that he wanted to do. He remained in a defensive posture hoping to draw the enemy out to where he could see them.

The taunting voice would not shut up, “Clever boy, you are? You pride yourself on your cleverness, but in that pride is your defeat. You have already lost. You are a failure. Utterly and completely a failure. Can you not feel the darkness within you rising to the surface? Give in to it and feel real power.” As the voice said that a wave crashed down taking him underwater. He was spinning around carried by a powerful rip current that would surely drown him if he did not get back to the surface. He was being pulled further and further down, all the while that voice was still echoing its words inside his head. He remembered the jutsu Hydro Tidal Shockwave and reasoned that it might cause enough momentum if aimed beneath him to overcome the rip current and propel him upwards to the surface. After all it could lift the user off the ground. It should be able to lift a user back to the surface. Without hesitating he executed the jutsu successfully sending a massive burst of water from his mouth directed beneath him. This succeeded in pushing him out of the rip current enough so that he could swim upwards. He broke the surface and gulped in air filling his lungs so that he could make his way to the island. Kashikoi had seen Jirou go under and as he broke the surface the grateful wolf licked his face and yipped for him to follow him.

The voice followed him as he made for the island having gotten back to his feet so that he was on the surface of the water again. Even though he was exhausted he used his chakra to water run across the surface finally surfing a wave onto the shore of the island. He had no desire to risk being caught in that rip current again. When he finally reached the shore he collapsed to his knees catching his breath and muttering to the voice, “SHUT UP ALREADY!”

The voice did not shut up instead adding, “Pathetic! You are now and will always be a loser.”

Jirou laid on his back looking up at the sky grateful to be on dry land and even more so to be alive. That was certainly NOT like the water walking class at all. He would have closed his eyes then and there and fallen asleep except for Kashikoi barking and pawing at him to get up and find the tree. Jirou sits up and sees the tree not far off where there are two cargo crates at the base. Seeing those crates fills Jirou with happiness and relief. He could get the antidote finally. He is too exhausted to stand instead crawling over to the crate that has his name on it. The other crate is marked with Karasu’s name and he leaves that for her. All the while the voice was harassing him and attempting to fill him with self-doubt and loathing. The storm had lessened finally as he opened his crate and found the antidote. He had never given himself a shot before and he hoped he did this right. Kashikoi looked on and yipped for him to hurry up. Holding the shot over his arm at the same spot where the Lord Fourth had injected him at the start of the exam, Jirou hesitated finding it difficult to actually give himself a shot. Doubts and distrust started to fill him and he trembled, finally having to close his eyes and inject the antidote into his arm. He bit his lip and winced as the antidote entered his body and his bloodstream. Putting the syringe down he leaned against the crate and rested to let the antidote start to take effect before embarking on the return to the village. Just getting here was exhausting and they needed to eat something. He hoped that the supplies in his backpack were not too waterlogged.

Taking off his backpack he inspected the contents and found that most of the supplies had escaped drowning. He discarded the soggy biscuits and opened up several containers. Grateful that they still had enough that was fit for consumption, Jirou and Kashikoi enjoyed their simple meal consisting of rice, vegetables and fish. It was filling and afterwards Jirou fell right to sleep near the fire that he had started to both warm them and dry off his very wet clothes. He was exhausted and while the voices still attempted to grasp at his mind filling him with its negativity throughout the night, eventually the darkness gave way to light and contentment. It was the first night since the exam had started that he slept without having nightmares induced by whatever was in the shot that the Lord Fourth had given him. He even snored while he slept as did Kashikoi who slept with his muzzle on Jirou’s chest.

By the time that the morning had arrived the rain had stopped. It had rained off and on throughout the night and based on the scent of ozone in the air and the air pressure it could be expected to continue intermittently throughout the day. Jirou awoke and stretched out his tired limbs. He felt restored though not completely. Still he knew that it was time that they got on their way back to the village to collect the results from the Lord Fourth. After having an energy bar for breakfast and feeding Kashikoi his own energy bar, Jirou proceeded to pack up his gear and extinguished the fire by shoveling dirt over the embers. This was the third day of their exam and he wanted to get back to the village before nightfall. He could remember parts of the ordeal and what had happened over the past two days. However his memory was fuzzy in parts and he honestly had no idea just how he made it through. His arm was a little sore where he had given himself the antidote. He thought it was amazing that given his state he even managed to give himself the injection. Kashikoi yipped ready to cross the water that was nowhere near being as agitated as he remembered it being the day before. Jirou nodded and felt himself ready lowering himself to all fours and starting out across the water, “Let's go home, Kashikoi.”

The trip across the water was uneventful and he was grateful when they both reached the shore on the other side. He was alert for the sounds of predators and other animals as they both ran along the trail that looked different from how it looked the two days before. Both Jirou and Kashikoi stayed downwind of predators and when the wind did change, as it did several times, they took to the trees to continue their journey. Jirou was keenly aware that every muscle in his body hurt. Not only that but he was physically and emotionally spent. Still he did not dare to stop, instead pushing himself to keep moving. Only twice did they stop and that was to water and fertilize the local foliage. While stopped Jirou ate another energy bar which helped boost his energy a little. Still he knew that he was going to need a long, hot shower when he got home. It was several hours of pushing himself through the trees above the trail before he started to recognize where he was. He knew he had to be close. Kashikoi yipped knowing it as well as he started to move faster to get to the gate. Through that gate awaited the Lord Fourth and his judgment as to whether or not they passed the exam. He hoped that he had passed. After all he had survived and managed to endure a physical and psychological ordeal. He had completed the tasks that had been set before him. He hoped that it would show the Lord Fourth that he could handle anything. He had worked very hard and he hoped that he would return home a chunin tonight.

As Jirou and Kashikoi covered the last distance from the Forest of Death through the gates, they saw the Lord Fourth and stopped just short of where he was standing. They looked around for Karasu who had not yet returned. He hoped that she was all right and had not run into any trouble on the way back. The trip back had been far less eventful than the trip out. He was bruised and sore. That would heal quickly enough, as he now waited for Karasu to return, so that they could receive their results. He had gotten the antidote and made it back within the three days, even if it was late afternoon by the time that they made it back. Now they just had to wait on what the Lord Fourth had to say. He gives the Lord Fourth a nod and moves to watch the gates for Karasu to arrive.

Karasu pushed on as the toxins in her system were draining her more and more. It was hard enough that Karasu had to brave the fierce storm that had such high winds and rain. Every time she took a step the turbulent weather would push her back two steps. Also with the harrowing wind came voices from the shadows of her own mind calling out to her in harsh tones. They had been walking for quite awhile, Karasu didn't know how long really. All she knew was the weather was making things harder for them to reach their destination.

As they walked Karasu was able to see what looked like a large lake. The water was rippling hard like large waves due to the storm. In the middle of the lake was an island. Karasu figured that is where the antidote was. She knew they would have to cross the lake to get to the island. Meanwhile the shadows felt as if they were starting to creep closer to Karasu. She would shake her head a few times trying to clear her mind but nothing was working. The drug was doing its job and Karasu was feeling every inch of it.

“Looks like we cross to the island over there. It won’t be easy because the waves are rippling harder than Nao Sensei’s water walking class.” she said with a frown. Nothing in this exam was supposed to be easy and Karasu knew that in the end it would benefit her. Right now she needed to get the antidote. She adjusted her chakra toward her feet to give them enough to balance the turbulent waves. She put one foot forward as the wind was trying to push her back and the water rippling hard. The shadows now seemed to form in the water like huge monsters waiting to attack their prey. Karasu had made a run for it figuring that Jirou and Kashikoi would do the same. It was hard for her to make out where they were with the waves, wind and shadows all going against her.

Karasu was running as hard and fast as she could and could see the island wasn’t too far, then all of a sudden a huge shadow wave appeared in front of her knocking her back with an eerie cackling laugh. The shadow monster created a whirlpool as Karasu fell into the water. Karasu got swept up into the whirlpool trying to not drown. The laughter could be heard with the voice of the shadow monster saying menacingly

“Die Die Die”

Karasu was holding her breath as she spun in the whirlpool. She knew she had to create something that would protect her from the trappings of the shadow monster’s whirlpool so that she could reach the surface of the water. Putting out her hand she started to conjure up a spinning ball of chakra in the palm of her hand. The power of the Rasengan created its own vortex pushing the shadow monster’s whirlpool back which allowed Karasu to swim up to the surface.

Finally able to breathe the air Karasu coughed a bit but she was not safe yet. The shadow monster was still coming at her but this time it was talking to her saying things as if it knew Karasu personally. Karasu looked at the shadow monster with an angry look on her face.

“You killed your mother. It was your fault that triggered the villagers. If the villagers hadn’t seen you use your abilities they wouldn’t have come after your family. It’s all your fault. Now you have to be held accountable for your actions. It’s time for you to die.”

Karasu shook her head. “No….no…...no that’s not true. They would have come after us no matter what. They didn’t like outsiders. It was their fault not mine.” She said countering the shadow monster’s words. The shadow monster looked at her and laughed.

“You would say anything to save your skin. I’m not the only one who blames you. “

The shadow monsters form changed into what looked like a distorted version of her mother. Karasu gulped when she saw her. “Karasuuuu”

The sound of her mother’s voice made Karasu weep. She almost forgot what it sounded like. She looked up and said “Mum” The shadow monster in Karasu’s mother form smiled then looked at Karasu angrily. The glare in her eyes felt like daggers to Karasu as her mother stared her down.

“You let me die. You left me all alone to die. How could you? You never loved me. How can you kill your own mother. After all I did for you. I brought you into this world with love and what do I get in return. A betrayal like no other and your heartless way of killing me. Your own mother. You were supposed to help me instead you left like the coward you are. ”

Karasu clenched her fist then said “No…..no….you are not my mum. My mum would never say this or blame me. I was four years old. There is no way in hell that she would blame a four year old child for her death. You have no idea what my mum was like. She was the most loving person. You are not even close to what she was. You are not my mother. Leave me be! “

An inner strength came over Karasu as the monster wave looking like her mother started to scream at her then charging after her with the entire lake Karasu held her stance as she knew the island was in reach if she could just get past the huge wave that was coming at her. She needed to get to land so that the waves couldn’t try and alter her path to the antidote.

The shadow monster was coming after her with a giant tidal wave. Karasu had to think fast before she got caught up in another whirlpool. She created a barrier, a Nature’s Guard hoping that it could protect her from the massive water coming toward her. She was ready to hold her breath if the barrier didn’t work and as the wave swept over her Karasu took in her breath. She did go under the water but the barrier took most of the blow. Karasu swam toward the top of the surface then made her way toward the island.

She made it to land though she was soaked and the weather was still bad but it did seem to be dying down some. She coughed up any water that she had in her body and collapsed afterwards. After a few moments laying on the ground feeling relieved that she was able to feel the ground, Karasu got up. The shadow monster was still around and angrier than ever that she was able to get out of the lake. She continued to walk but she wasn’t sure where Jirou and Kashikoi were. It seemed during her ordeal with the shadow monster she had lost contact with them. She hoped they were ok and that the shadow monster didn’t get them.

She walked toward the middle of the island and saw two wooden crates. The shadow monster was loud in her mind and trying to show her images of various things to distract her from the crate. Karasu didn’t allow the shadow monsters tactics to make her deviate from her plans. She finally got to the crates and opened it up. There were the antidotes inside. Karasu wasn’t bothered giving herself an injection maybe because the lessons in medical training helped in realizing the importance of it. She quickly took one that had her name on it and punched it into her arm. She waited for a few moments allowing it to seep into her body and eliminate the toxin of the drug. Karasu started to finally feel a bit more herself though still very exhausted. She took off her soaked backpack and opened it up to see if there was anything she could eat that wasn’t all soaked and wet. She found some rations that were more for energy and protein. She ate it very quickly. The ration protein bar had no real taste in it but at least it would be enough to sustain her.

The rain and wind were still active but not as heavy as earlier. She was just glad that she was able to finally get the antidote. Right now she just wanted to sleep. She first made a fire so that she kept warm. Afterwards she dragged herself over to a tree and slumped down to sleep. She hoped when she woke up she would see Jirou and Kashikoi. She figured that now she has the antidote inside her she would find them more easily than before. She went into a dreamless sleep as her body recovered from the toxins. It still was breaking down from the antidote and a night's rest was what her body needed.

The storm had passed but it was raining off and on throughout the night. Karasu was cold but she was so exhausted that she didn’t bother trying to get warm. The fire had gone out. When she woke up it was early morning and the third day of the exam. The rain had stopped though Karasu’s clothes were still damp. She really needed a bath because she was so dirty with mud and dirt. She got her backpack and ate another ration to put something in her tummy. She was still exhausted and knew she could sleep for several days but in truth she didn't have several days. She had to get back to the gates of the forest and to Lord Fourth who should be waiting for her at the gate where she left him. She didn’t see Jirou or Kashikoi. They must have left before her so that means she needed to hurry to get back.

Other than the obvious animal sounds of nature, Karasu didn’t have to battle any creatures on her way back. She did make sure that she didn’t attract attention from any predators. She crossed the lake and through the woods of the forest staying alert as possible. She traveled from tree to tree trying to stay at a good pace to get back and avoiding any creatures that were preying on the ground. She only stopped to relieve herself and she ate on the way. She wanted to get back before nightfall. Karasu was happy that she didn’t see or hear the shadow monster anymore. It was enough to drive anyone crazy. She was happy that she had a clear mind though now she was extremely exhausted. She was going forward on sheer will alone. She was so determined to make it back there was nothing that was going to get in her way.

It was several hours but Karasu was able to see familiar areas that she had been at the beginning of the exam. She knew she was close. She still had not seen any sign of Jirou and Kashikoi. Knowing them they would have made it through due to their abilities of the Inuzuka. After a few miles of walking she was able to finally see the gate entrance in the near distance. She somehow was going to make it though the entire exam really took a toll on her but she knew that she had to withstand a lot of hard conditions which the exam was designed for. She felt she had proven to herself that she could handle anything. She saw Jirou and Kashikoi there at the gate. She figured they arrived shortly before her. She smiled weakly but gave them the thumbs up on them making it back. “Hey guys boy are you two a sight for sore eyes. I hope we all made it to Chuunin with all that we've been through. I figured you probably had it just as rough as I did, but we made it through in time. That’s saying something in my book.”

Now it was time for the real judgement of them by Lord Fourth. Were they worthy of being Chuunin or will they remain Genin. She worked so hard on getting to this point she hated to have to fail. She made it in time and achieved the objective of getting the antidote. She had various scratches on her arm which she would heal after she got the results. Just waiting was worse than the shadow monster. She looked at Jirou and Kashikoi wondering if they were nervous. She was proud of herself no matter what the results were. She looked on at Lord Fourth though tired; she still had determination in her eyes.

Takeshi had been waiting there at the entrance the whole time, though a few sleepless nights he would hate to admit it he knew that this was a trial that had to be done by these two alone. He was fully accepting of that and this was probably the last exam he would be running, he wondered how much time he had to spend pondering if anything bad had happened to the two. Since promotion to Gennin he had seen them a few times, each time both of them showed promise and truly could become something great, even Takeshi knew that. As he listened to the footsteps he turned his attention to the two that were coming towards him. The smile on his face grew as he realized both of them had done what was needed to be done, they wouldn't talk about the mission too much, no he had more plans in store for these two than they knew. As he looked at the dog as well scanning it quickly he realized it too was fine, so it seemed they had passed the first part of the test without a single issue, which was good one step closer to achieving their goals.

"Welcome back both of you, though you look pushed to the limits it seems that the goal of this exam was completed? I take it both of you have managed to get the antidote without any issue or trouble?"

He waited a few minutes, before remembering that he had in fact got a meal prepared for both of them when they returned, after all, they would be tired, hungry, thirsty, and pretty much the walking dead from this exam, but that was the point of this exam. This examination wasn't a Chunin exam at all, it was something harder. Something that made or broke the best of them and the record showed that it had definitely broken more than it had passed. As he sat down at the table with them to eat what appeared to be a casual meal but it was so more than that, the next question was the most important, and the answer would be just that. It would determine the four days that this exam had been spread over. It would be one that made them see what the real world was like and one that would make them doubt things, but this question was asked to every Shinobi when it was required.

"I see you both did well, so only a few questions while we eat, nothing too consuming and I promise you we can be on our way. After all, I do know how lovely the call is of a warm bed after a few days of being away from it and the hard work that had to be put in"

Takeshi's wouldn't call the meal something he cooked, more like ordered in, it was a selection of Sushi, Tepenyaki meat and of course the world-famous Ichi Raku Ramen all dished up to dig into on the table, he beckoned them to eat after the tiredness had set in one's mind would be lost, especially with the drug so the true answers would slip free easier without thinking about them much. That was the point of it all in a way the truth would come out.

"So, now you have done the exam, let me know if you had a team, how would you have to lead your team while you doubted yourself in there? And what is more important, the village or the Hokage? After all, these would be things to consider for the future, loyalty, duty, command, and of course, the hardest question, commanding at a cost, would you let someone die for the survival of the rest of the team. It's that old argument, isn't it? One for Ten?"

He watched them as he helped himself to the ramen bowl out of the three, looking at it the smell of the famous special Ramen filling his nostrils as he began to dig into the food with chopsticks in his hands, though what seemed like a casual demeanor the formed Hokage was studying each of there actions, movements even facial expressions the entire time.

Jirou’s eyes grew wide when he saw the table filled with various dishes of food. Both he and Kashikoi were bone tired and hungry for food other than the rations that had been included in their backpacks. His attention was on the Lord Fourth particularly when he invited them to sit and eat. There was no hesitation in either Jirou or Kashikoi, as Jirou sat down and started to dish up two full plates for himself and Kashikoi. Setting the plate down for Kashikoi, Jirou let him get started on his meal while he listened to what the Lord Fourth had to say.

This was the moment of truth when they would find out if they had passed and would become chunin. When he was asked about the antidote Jirou did not hesitate to answer, “I wouldn’t say that there were no issues or problems. In spite of the obstacles though, I was able to get the antidote and give it to myself.” Even though he was exhausted the savory scents of the meal were irresistible and Jirou started to eat the food. Kashikoi was already done with his meal and ready for seconds. He had not at all expected to be fed when they returned. Gratefully Jirou thanked the Lord Fourth, “Thank you for this food, sir.”

When Jirou heard the Lord Fourth talk about the call of a warm bed, he nodded in complete agreement and added. “A hot shower too.” Jirou was keenly aware that he was pretty ripe. His sense of smell had already picked up that Karasu could use a shower as well. Not that he would ever say as much to her face however. The Forest of Death would be far preferable to encountering the wrath of Karasu.

Jirou ate the meal all the while listening to the questions that the Lord Fourth asked them. He thought about each question while he ate and after he was somewhat full he would take the time to answer each of the questions as best as he could. It would seem that the exam was not done yet. The first question asked wanted to know how he would have led his team while he was doubting himself. After he drained the bowl of ramen to the last drop, Jirou wiped his mouth with his sleeve and thought carefully about his answer before speaking up.

“As for how I would have led my team under similar circumstances, I would say that any good team is based in trust and acting as one unit. Team members have to trust each other. There is no ‘I’ in ‘TEAM’. The team works together and they help out when needed. The mission succeeds not because of one person, but because the group works together as one unit. That is how Kashikoi and I work together, We complement each other. It is the same way with any team. Each team member should know that the other team members will have their back no matter what. They have to trust and believe in their teammates. If there is strife or distrust then very likely the mission will not succeed and this will reflect on the team’s leader. So I would try and let the team know that I am not just their leader, but I am also their teammate and I will have their back and trust that they will have my back. Together the team will be able to overcome the obstacles that might be encountered and in turn complete the mission successfully. That is what Kashikoi and I already do naturally. I trust him to have my back and he trusts me to have his back.” At this point Jirou dishes up seconds for Kashikoi and sets it down for him to enjoy. Kashikoi yips his thanks and proceeds to wolf down his second dinner.

The next question was easier to answer and he would proceed to answer as to which was more important, “The Hokage is also a part of the village, so naturally the village is the most important to protect. In the village is the future of the Shinobi. The Hokage is, however, not separate from the village. They are given a position of trust as a living example of the Shinobi teachings. That is why the duty of every Shinobi is to protect the village to their last breath. The village is also a team of people or really one family. Each of us is strengthened by our bonds or connections with each other. We value each other and we protect our family or team even if it means sacrificing our own life so that the village can continue. The future lies in protecting the village and the next generation of Leaf Shinobi.”

The last question, while a difficult one was one that he took very seriously. He was asking about sacrificing a team member for the survival of the rest of the team. After pouring himself a cup of water, Jirou drank the refreshingly cool water. After setting the cup down he looked right at the Lord Fourth as he answered, “This is a question about sacrifice for the survival of the team or the village. As the team leader I am responsible for the rest of the team. No team member gets left behind to be imprisoned or killed by an enemy. A teammate who abandons his team to such a fate is worse than scum. The team is one unit and it is about having faith in your teammates to make the right choices. That is why I would sacrifice myself for the survival of the team if it came down to that. It is a scenario that every team leader or Hokage must face. Whether a team or a village the survival of the village and team is paramount. This would not be without a huge fight though. I would do everything in my power to stand and fight with my team. As a team we would do everything possible to make sure that the whole team survives. The ultimate responsibility falls to the leader, in the same way that the captain goes down with the ship. Sometimes though that choice is not in your hands and people die despite all of your best efforts. That is the responsibility and the reality that every Shinobi must accept. As a team leader I would do everything in my power to see that the whole team returns home, even if it means giving my own life to do so. This is what I believe with all my being.” He places his clenched fist over his heart. “This is my bond as a Shinobi and I always keep my word.”

Jirou let out a breath and resumed eating, waiting to hear what the Lord Fourth had to say about his answers. He was feeling better with his full stomach, except that now a food coma was settling in and his bed was calling to him even louder. Kashikoi had rolled over onto his back, his legs in the air while he snored happily, his very full belly exposed. Kashikoi was just showing what he was sure they all felt. He looked over towards Karasu and waited to hear how she answered the Lord Fourth’s questions.

Karasu was tired to the bone. She kept herself awake and alert through will power. Looking at Jirou it seemed that he had done the same too. She was happy that both she and Jirou were able to make it through the exam. Now was the results of their harrowing journey. She walked over to Takeshi who welcomed them back. Karasu gave a weak smile to Lord Fourth and nodded “Thank you and yes I was able to get my antidote.” she said tiredly.

She looked down on the table by which Takeshi sat next to. Karasu’s eyes grew big as her stomach growled loudly. On the table was Sushi, Teppanyaki meat and the very famous Ichi Raku Ramen. Her mouth was watering because she really hadn’t had a good meal since before the exam. She looked at Takeshi when he said he wanted to ask a few questions while they ate.

“Oh this is for us?” she looked at him with longing. When it appeared to be so Karasu sat down and started to pile everything she saw on the table onto her plate. It was like her birthday where you get to open your favorite presents. She longed for real food for three days. Once she had the food on her plate she clasped her hands together and said in a tired but thankful voice. “Thank you for the food!” she dug in almost without hearing any conversations. She heard Takeshi mention the call of a warm bed. Oh the thought of a warm bed was something that Karasu would just die for. Of course after her meal too. She definitely needed a shower too. She hoped the stench on her wasn’t too bad to make Lord Fourth puke. For now the taste of food in her stomach made her feel so much better. Especially the Teppanyaki beef which was one of her favorites. She savored the food in her mouth then listened to the questions that Lord Fourth was asking.

Looking up while slurping ramen she heard the questions being asked. Lord Fourth had asked them how would we lead a team in a similar situation like the exam they just took. That was the first question and Karasu thought long and hard on the question before answering.

“First off before the mission would start I would talk to my team and tell them what to be aware of and understand the importance of teamwork that we will get through this together even if it feels they are alone they are not. I would also tell them about the importance of believing in themselves as well as their teammates. Even when things look and feel the darkest there is a light just beyond if one has the determination, guts and belief to get through it. That’s what being a Shinobi is about. That’s why exams like this are placed upon future leaders to see if they have the fortitude and understanding to overcome such obstacles because there will be many situations like this or worse for Shinobi. "

The next question was what is more important: the village or the Hokage? Karasu didn’t need to take as much time on this question because she learned this in earlier lessons. She has a greater understanding of the question now that she has more experience under her belt. “The Hokage is important because of the role he or she takes. Their number one goal for a Hokage is to protect the village even if it means they lose their life in the process, so it can live on. Which shows that the number one priority and importance for all the Shinobi in the village is to have that mind set, where the village needs protecting. The village represents the future and all the people in the village are family. This is the greatest bond we have to one another. We protect what we cherish and everyone in the village is valued and connected through the bonds. Or what is called the Will of Fire. We are all connected and bonded together. The next generation of the Leaf Village are the future and we must lay a foundation that they can continue years after we have all gone.“

Third question was probably the hardest question. Lord Fourth had asked if they would let someone die for the survival of the rest of the team. Karasu wiped her mouth with a napkin before she answered. She knew that this was an important question but for her it was not as hard to answer. She had her own Nindo so her way of thinking may be different from others who have been asked this very same question.

“I don’t believe in letting anyone die. I would never leave anyone behind to die or get captured. As a leader I would be responsible for every person on my team. I would protect them and stand with them through thick and thin. Having the trust of each member as they go on a mission is one of the important things that is needed. If there was no option and that someone must die to be able to move forward I would gladly give my life up instead of having my comrades give up theirs. This is My Nindo, My Ninja Way!” she exclaimed with vigor “Not every mission goes the way you want it no matter how much you plan and death does happen because that’s the life of a Shinobi. We all know that comes with the job. All Shinobi should be prepared for anything thrown at them, even death and as a leader I would do all I can to prepare my team. I would fight with my team until the end. I would never turn my back on my comrades. I also have trust with those I go on missions with. It’s the duty of a Shinobi especially those in our village. ”

She waited to see what Lord Fourth thought of the answers that were given. She answered honestly and with much thought. Karasu had a little more energy now that she had some food in her stomach. She was still exhausted and couldn’t wait till she got home to drop onto her warm bed.

Takeshi continued to feast with the two as he watched them and smiled, though he had never personally been one to pass a simple Chunin exam for that matter, he had to endure the ANBU way of the world. It was a lot darker and a lot less known than any of the others out there, of course, it was similar as well as both positions came with that one thing that would break someone's will. Both came with responsibility and he had come to accept and understand what that responsibility meant to the village, to himself and to his comrades. In that flash he remembered faces long since past, and how the world had changed so much since the bright day of the Academy.

"I see, well it seems like you both have put your heart and soul into the exam, I guess you are wanting to know your grade if its a pass or fail, well it's not quite that simple, unfortunately, that is just the way the world works that we live in. Its never going to be black or white, that said I am happy to get you the results of the practical examination and the theory examination as you have completed both parts."

He paused just to make them wait a bit longer, after all, he suspected after all of this they were bursting with anticipation of the result that they had achieved, what grade they had got and what the world would hold for them. Finishing up his bowl of Ramen he neatly placed it in front of him and placed the chop sticks down as he looked towards the entrance to the forest of death he pondered long and hard the best way to word this to them, to really lay on what was expected of them.

"Your actions, your lives, we all live and die by the rules laid out of Konaha, your place in them will be to lead Shinobi, to enforce the rules, make no mistake after today you are not a team, you are team leaders, very rarely will you work together on missions, instead your job and mission will be assembling a team, working with other branches, and being the front faces of the village. Make no mistake like me for both of you, one day you will get sloppy, one day you will slip, and ultimately one day this will cause you to die."

He sighed as he knew full well the truth behind those words, he had lost so many friends, so many comrades during this time, he had to protect Sennin, and Shinobi of Leaf countless time and he was still standing. Unlike those who's named had become nothing more than a scratch on the wall, what a strange world it had become and even he knew that the changes where never for good or bad they were just for the sake of change. As he brought his face back up he smiled towards the two younger Shinobi that had completed the challenge set out for them.

"Raijin Jirou, Nakano Karasu both of you have excelled in both the theory and practical side of the exam, demonstrating a thinking skill and level of perception expected of Shinobi of your ranks, as such I am giving you the rank of Jounin of Konoaha, both of you will receive your paperwork once we are finished here, and your ranks will be confirmed. Make no mistake this promotion is a punishment, but you will realise that soon, I just hope you both have what it takes to push through everything and who knows maybe one day one of you like myself will have the honour of being the Hokage for this village. Congratulations to both of you on this and don't fuck it up"

Takeshi stood up from the table and inclined his head towards the two Jounin, as he turned and walked away, leaving them with the food, and the fact that they had received a double promotion. Lord Forth saw potential and as always he rewarded that hard effort and determination. They were above Chuunin that was plain to see and it would have been an insult to give them just that rank. But how they handled themselves was down to them now. He turned just before he got out of earshot.

"Oh report to Soku, she will be relieving me as the new Main Branch Sennin, but my office is always just down the hall, happy for you to come to talk any time"

With that, he was gone.

Jirou and Kashikoi had finished their meals as they now awaited being told their results. Kashikoi seemed to take it much more in stride, since he decided to take a nap while they waited. Jirou could remember parts of the exam. The toxin that he had been given had left him unable to recall many details. That bothered him somewhat and he hoped that there would be no lingering effects. Since taking the antidote his appetite had returned in force based on the empty plate and bowl that were now before him. He really could use a shower and sleep before too long. His eyelids had grown quite heavy and he waited in anticipation of hearing the Lord Fourth continue with what he was saying.

Jirou watched the movements of the Lord Fourth as he placed the bowl and chopsticks down neatly and for several moments he seemed to be pondering his next words carefully while he stared at the entrance to the Forest of Death. He couldn’t help but wonder at just what he was thinking about as he stared so intently at the gates. He knew that he would find out soon enough and Jirou was not one to think about what he might have done differently. He had done the best that he could when faced with the circumstances that he had been placed in. The Lord Fourth was right when he said that they had put their heart and soul into this exam. This was the life that they had chosen and they were not ones to do anything in a half-hearted way. Especially something that would be determining their futures. They had studied and worked hard. All of their efforts had led to this very moment.

The Lord Fourth continued explaining about what would be expected of them. Jirou nodded slowly, taking in every word seriously. He understood very well that death was a part of every Shinobi’s life and he could only hope that when his death came he met it bravely while protecting the village to his very last breath. This was his home and he took his responsibilities and duties seriously.

After a pause the Lord Fourth resumed speaking. The Lord Fourth told them that they had excelled in both the theory and practical part of the exam. He went on to tell them that they had demonstrated a thinking skill and level of perception as was expected of Shinobi who held their ranks. Jirou smiled and even now Kashikoi was sitting up waiting to hear the results. It was the next part of his announcement that would floor Jirou. The Lord Fourth was promoting them both to the rank of Jounin. He went on to say that once they were finished here, they would be receiving their official paperwork with their ranks being confirmed.

It would take a moment for Jirou to close his mouth again when the shock of this announcement caused his mouth to drop open. This was a double promotion and he could scarcely believe what he had just heard. They had both gotten a double promotion. Jirou scarcely even heard when the Lord Fourth said that this was their punishment and that he hoped that they would both have what it takes to push through everything and maybe even one day become Hokage. This was possibly the best day of his life. Once the shock wore off and Jirou closed his mouth again, he smiled widely at Karasu excited about what had just happened. The Lord Fourth congratulated them both and lastly admonished them to not fuck it up. As the Lord Fourth was preparing to leave Jirou said to him,

“Thank you for this honor, sir. I will do everything I can to live up to the trust that you have placed in me. You have my word on that.” As the Lord Fourth was walking away, he called back to both of them to report to Soku the new Main Branch Sennin. He also added that his office was just down the hall and that they would be welcome to stop in anytime. With the Lord Fourth having left them with the table of food, Jirou was still grinning widely when he said to Karasu, “We got a double promotion. We really did it.” Even Kashikoi is excited jumping up playfully and running around them both. The fatigue had left him replaced temporarily by extreme happiness. He would never forget what had just happened. “We should pack up this food and take it home. We should go home and tell your father what happened.” He started to move to offer Karasu a hug stopping in mid stride both nervous and aware that he was pretty ripe and in need of a shower.

Karasu was ready to just fall asleep. The food was delicious and much needed. She hoped she did well on the exam. She felt she did but she wasn’t a mind reader so who knew what Lord Fourth was thinking when it came to the results. She figured he would be rather strict in his evaluation. She understood what was expected and just hoped that she met his expectations which like most higher ups would be a very high example. Of course she wouldn't have it any other way. Karasu prided herself on how she approached and did things as Shinobi. She wanted to earn her way to whatever goal she had.

Karasu listened as Takeshi spoke to both of them as they ate. It seemed he understood that they did put their heart and soul into the exam. She was appreciative that he recognized this. He still didn’t say if they passed to Chuunin or not. She remembered awhile back when the threat of placing them back to the academy was mentioned. She hoped that this was not going to be one of those results saying that he was not satisfied with how they did and they must go back to the academy. Karasu suddenly got really nervous as she waited in anticipation.

The young Genin scarfed her food down and once she finished pushed her plate aside sitting comfortably. Lord Fourth explained the job of what team leaders were and told them they were not a team. He also explained what may happen for team leaders and all Shinobi alike which was being faced with the possibility of death. Karasu understood as she listened. She knew the job of a Shinobi was not always a pleasant one and led to death. She nodded and listened on still wanting to know the results of the exam. Did they pass? Were they Chuunin? In her mind she was hoping and praying that Lord Fourth would get to the point already. Of course she would never say this out loud but the waiting was frustrating.

After Lord Fourth took a moment to pause he resumed talking to them. This time he mentioned that they both excelled in the theory and practical exam, and they also demonstrated a thinking skill and level of perception expected of Shinobi of their ranks. Karasu beamed as he said this. Then the next thing Lord Fourth said caught Karasu by surprise.

“As such I am giving you the rank of Jounin of Konoha, both of you will receive your paperwork once we are finished here, and your ranks will be confirmed.”

Karasu’s jaw dropped. She was at a loss for words. Did she hear right was she really a Jounin not a Chuunin like she expected. Not only was she promoted but Jirou as well. She glanced at him still in shock then finally she smiled with excitement and delight. Lord Fourth mentioned this was their punishment and hoped they both had what it took for the job and maybe rise up to even higher ranks including Hokage. He congratulated them both. Karasu smiled and said

“Thank you Lord Fourth I promise you I won’t let you down. I will show that I am worthy of the rank, and trust you have shown me. “ she said as she watched Takeshi get up from the table then tell them they were to report to Soku who was the new Main Branch Sennin. He also said his office was down the hall and would be happy to talk to them any time. Karasu grinned so widely that she didn’t care how much tiredness she felt. She had never been so happy. She looked at Jirou and Kashikoi and told them “Congratulations I can’t believe we did it!” This was one of the best days of her life and one she would never forget. She got up and cleaned off the table. Any remaining food she would take home. Once she was done she looked at Jirou and Kashikoi.

“Let’s head home.”
