Ninpocho Chronicles

Ninpocho Chronicles is a fantasy-ish setting storyline, set in an alternate universe World of Ninjas, where the Naruto and Boruto series take place. This means that none of the canon characters exists, or existed here.

Each ninja starts from the bottom and start their training as an Academy Student. From there they develop abilities akin to that of demigods as they grow in age and experience.

Along the way they gain new friends (or enemies), take on jobs and complete contracts and missions for their respective villages where their training and skill will be tested to their limits.

The sky is the limit as the blank page you see before you can be filled with countless of adventures with your character in the game.

This is Ninpocho Chronicles.

[spoilername="Day BeforeTripe"]"All set then, Kogami-sama? Are you sure you don't want to give a speech?"

The morning sun had just begun to peek over the mountainous horizon, casting light through the many windows of the Torre Celeste. It looked to be a blessedly clear, warm day for the people of Kumogakure; it was a good omen for their endeavours ahead. The religious would be relieved to know the god of lightning and his vassals looked upon their choice with good favour and fortune. The Council had discussed and agonized over whether to participate in Tea country's world tournament from the day the invitation had arrived. Many less brilliant suns had risen and set before they had come to a consensus on the matter, and anxiety and tempers rose high as each argued their view. The last comparable affair had been a draw for chaos and had put many of their shinobi in grave danger, the reminded one another gravely. They did not want to throw away the lives of their best to those who would be drawn to such an event with the intention of causing destruction; revenue and reputation would be lost. The trouble was, they collectively realised, the land of lightning could not afford to bow out. Its people would never forgive being labelled as cowards on the world stage. The negative image would be one they could never escape. And yet, even now after the applications had been sent out and the top numbers had been weeded out, some held fast to their worries

While the council had approved Cloud's participation, it was up to its shinobi leaders to pick their combatants. Sorry.

"I took your suggestions to heart and designed the first trials, with a little help, I hope they're satisfactory? This should work for all the applicants. We've set up a viewing area for you to watch, of course," The main branch Sennin of Kumogakure commented as she watched her fearless leader pour over the schedule for the week. She leaned expectantly on the edge of his desk, waiting for any sign of the brilliance of her plan to sink in. Yuii didn't want to brag, but she'd put a whole weeks worth of effort into the last details of the gauntlet ahead. It had taken some effort and a few guilt-inducing cups of coffee, but she was certain of their perfection. Her plans would choose the best of the best from the nine individuals chosen through their prowess and reputation to compete for one of only three spots on the world stage. All that was left now was the Raikage's seal of approval.

"Do you approve of the divisions? We drew random numbers to assure that each group had no advantages, but I think divine guidance has made sure each is well balanced." she added anxiously, studying Ayumu's face for approval, "And don't worry, I have someone else assigned to the trial overseeing. There will be no conflict of interest, my team will simply set up the trials." There was an understanding that in the proceedings ahead, she needed to set aside all connections to the combatants in order to make it as fair as possible, but some bias was impossible to avoid. At least she could admit it.

There was a hum of energy to her that was easy to read. Much of the village was still buzzing with the news of the tournament, and as a shinobi, it was difficult not suppress the desire to join in. A challenge really could stir the blood. "Seeing all this, I'm disappointed I couldn't participate, but at least I can do this much. The Kunoichi of Kumogakure are unrepresented this time, but maybe next year."[/spoilername]

The Breakdown

The tournament was set to be on an international scale. It was well known there could be affluent members from cultures from the deserts of wind and beyond in attendance. Cloud's reputation was on the line, along with that of every nation that did or did not attend. Everything Cloud's champions did would be in the public eye and would reflect upon their nation. In a word, they needed to be perfect. That was a lot of pressure to place on the shoulders of three individuals, and the village needed to know that they would not buckle under pressure.

There had been long arguments about how to pick the champions of Kumogakure. Some have suggested that the priests of Raiden should divine the answer. Others considered the ranks of those who had applied, arguing that those most accomplished were most deserving. Some demanded trial by combat, seeing the drawing of blood as the only solution. But, as time crawled forward, reason took hold. The gods could be called luck, rank left no room for the heroes of tomorrow and bloody combat could lead to death. No, they needed a method with fines that could test the true strengths of their candidates. And so they approached the greatest scholars and teachers to find an appropriate method.

All of them just happened to be on vacation that week, so the task fell to Kagetsu, Yuii and the Main branch.

Oh boy.

Dozens had applied, but only nine names had stood out amongst the others like shining beacons of strength and accomplishment. The day following registration, it was announced publically by radio and bulletin that all nine would participate in the preparation and planning stages for the tournament. That any one of them could be chosen, anyone could be a global fighting star. Word spread like grassfire through the village, spurring gossip high and low with commoners and shinobi alike. Favourites were chosen, fan girl effigies were created, 'authentic used training gear' became hot on the black market, bar brawls were started over who would surely be chosen and betting began.

Some of "The Nine" combatants as they were becoming known, were already favoured to win over others. Amongst the list were two Sennin, past and present, a Vice-Commander, and several topped ranked shinobi with achievement lists the length of an arm each. Alternatively, others were of average rank, notably the Mednin in training and young chuunin*, which drew favouritism amongst the youths of Kumogakure. Those in the know whispered of the potential might of those overlooked in the Anbu and Jounin rank.
(I know you're anbu Hoshi, but public doesn't)

The same day the village was informed, a booklet of information and a congratulatory note would arrive for each candidate, carried by tawny, crooked whiskered cats in tiny aviator costumes. They would come to discover that the pages held an array of information, prefaced by congratulations and form for life extra life insurance to be paid out to their next of kin. Most notable were descriptions of the main villages expected to be part of the world tournament, whatever information some poor librarian had dug up on Tea Country and photocopied and a list of notables, the up to date wanted list, a list of extra training practices they SHOULD be engaging in, and a dossier on all the other eight chosen.

[spoilername="Tea Country"]
Tea Country

A central trading hub for the south-western portion of the world, Tea Country has become synonymous with the term "trade" mostly due to the positioning and success of its capital Kurosawa City. Most of Tea, despite the image that comes to mind for most people when they think about the country, is, in fact, rural farming communities which-- surprise, surprise --grow tea and much of Tea Country's wealth is responsible for it. The particular type of tea which is farmed and exported out of Tea Country is a native species of oolong tea which, for reasons which have been as of yet been uncovered by any interested parties, will only grow in the particular conditions found in the strangely schizophrenic climate of Tea Country.

Climate
The important thing to note about Tea when discussing its' climate is whether or not the discussion is about Northern Tea or Southern Tea. Northern Tea, being closer to the Fire Country and its' more lush environs is a much more tropical climate. Warm weather nearly all year-round but with the cooler winds of the sea, the strange climate seems perfect for growing their particular and strange brand of tea plants. Northern Tea Country sports most of it's farmland and has the sparsest population as the people of the country have slowly migrated south to be closer to the boom of industry and civilization taking place in the surrounding territory of Kurosawa City. Many older Northerner families find a certain level of distrust towards Southern families; mostly due to paranoia that the denizens of Kurosawa and the south may decide in the future to forget their roots and declare themselves their own country rather than continuing to bear the ancestral name of Tea Country. Typically more traditional in nature, Northern families tend to be what you would expect of an older and more family-centric people.

The Southern provinces of Tea are significantly different. Similar to the harsher climates of Wind though with a great deal more fresh water and without the other various deadly facets of Wind, the people of Southern Wind Country have grown into a collective people of experienced merchants and power-brokers which control most (read: nearly all) of Tea Country's wealth even though they owe a great deal of their success to the unique tea which is grown in the north and then traded to the south for export and sale to lands abroad. Even though the Southern Provinces do not suffer things like sandworm attacks or the vicious mineral storms that plague central Wind Country, they have their own share of problems-- namely criminals and pirate bands which rove the less policed parts of the state. The Southern Provinces have, for that reason, become quite notorious for their cutthroat criminals given the nature of how much trade and money goes in and out of places such as Kurosawa City on a regular basis. It's commonly said that if a Tea Southerner isn't trying to take your money by sale then he's likely trying to take it by force.

Economics
The northern regions of Tea Country is mostly hills and plains, they enjoy rather temperate climates (as previously mentioned) year-round so have a bountiful crop most seasons. While most of the land is dedicated to farmland and long twisting dirt paths, small villages can be found throughout the country. Highly traditional Asian-style homes dot narrow dirt roads, most people travel by horse-cart or bicycle. Most of the power in these northern tea villages is held by the village chief, often an elder of the village that belongs to an honoured house in the small community. Honored houses in Tea Country are old family lines that often claim divine right or special powers bestowed upon their blood and seed during ancient times. For the most part these village leaders make decisions for their small communities in terms of what to farm, how much to produce, what soil would yield the best crop and what they would sell to adjacent or even distant communities. Some great craftsmen also come from northern Tea Country, known for their fine hand-blown glass made from fine white sand crystals through trade with Wind Country that has a lovely rose to amber hue, often referred to as "Teaglass." Other aspects of trade to note include their cultivation of grains such as wheat, rye and barley that are used in both baking as well as beer production, potatoes and citrus trees such as oranges. While there has been moderate success with other vegetables such as cabbage, carrots, and beans as well as fruits such as grapes, apples, and plums, they are not considered to be cash crops due to their variable success due to various indigenous blights. There is little game hunting in the north, livestock is a choice food source, most commonly beef,l sheep and chicken.

Southern Tea Country is a hub of commerce, their focal point being the city of Kurosawa. Located on the shore, Kurosawa, as well as many other shoreline cities, rely heavily on trade from their docks. Fishing is a local resource as is man-power due to the dense population in the southern portion of Tea Country. There is a noticeable difference between the upper class and the lower class, being a region that embraces the concept of capitalism families or elder do not make the decisions of this portion of the country, rather it is the person or people who are the most successful or ambitious. Hotsume Rika is presently considered to be the leader and face of Tea Country, her ambitious rise to power is as awe-inspiring as her uncanny ability to maintain her seat of power in Kurosawa. While there are shining buildings that pierce the heavens that act as the resting area for the southern elite, there are also dim shanty-like structures clustered in the disadvantaged zones that the poorest citizens dwell in.

Tea Country Leadership</SIZE><i></i>
Tea has no king, queen or ruling family. Much of the northern leadership lies in the oldest households of Tea Country. While leadership roles in both North and South Tea Country are not hereditary but rather by the virtue of their vast estate and holdings, many of these assets are passed down from one generation to another and wealth in the form of farmland in the north and monetary capital or trade partners in the south is jealously guarded by these powerful families.

Kurosawa, in the absence of abundant farmland but the presence of bountiful opportunities for trade became the unofficial capital of Tea Country over a century ago. Due to the dependence of the Northern countryside for trade, the merchants of Kurosawa slowly began to gain power over the farmers of the north-country. Rules tariffs and taxes have created tensions between the north and the south over the years but they maintain a tense relationship. Kurosawa's leader, also an unofficial position of power presently belongs to the wealthiest and most powerful woman in Tea Country, Hotsume Rika. This is often a sort-lived position of power because a bad trade choice can devastate a leader's resources. Over the years her assets have grown rather than diminish and her influence over the country has grown powerful. Under her authority, the once feudal country setting has become a unified country, much to the ire of many of the great lords and ladies of other honored homes.

Hotsume Rika
Crime and politics... the situation is always fluid.

Biography
Hotsume Rika emerged from obscurity 30 years ago. The middle daughter of a longshoreman, her family was working class poor. Without formal education, she noticed an unexplored business opportunity with Soons Haven. Soons haven was the gateway to Wind Country, a vast near uninhabitable expanse of countryside with a surprisingly large population considering the dangerous and inhospitable setting. While the obvious need for Water was already being satisfied as was Carmot trade, Wind Country also housed a hidden village and trace with Sunagakure was limited by the Diamond Maelstrom. Trade with Sunagakure would not only be a source of revenue but it would also grant her a powerful ally in her ascension to power. She focused on trade with Sunagakure, initially using Soon's Haven as a middle man until she was able to deal with Sunagakure on her own merit. Her endeavors were profitable and investments made in shinobi guards have protected not only her life but also her assets. Over the years her life has been in peril several times, often by rival entrepreneurs or jealous rivals. Today, she has a monopoly of the ships necessary for overseas trade and it is through shipping that she maintains her seat of power.

Presently she is looking to achieve two things: find a suitable mate and eventual heir and to consolidate her power over Tea Country. Rumor has it she is also looking to expand her influence in a more direct manner in Wind Country.|Name: Hotsume Rika
Age: 46
Gender: Female
Marital Status: Single
Occupation: Countess of Tea Country

Physical Description
Coming in at an impression six feet and two inches, Rika is commonly considered to be an imposing presence to stand near and even though she is blessed with youthful features which are enduring into her middle years she is rarely caught not wearing a smile. With unblemished porcelain skin and a pair of bright yellow eyes, many who frequent the courts of Tea Country are led to wonder if perhaps their leader's lasting youth and more unusual features are the result of some well-kept secret supernatural stain on her family's bloodline but none have ever been able to claim such a thing with any evidence and those that do are quickly brought to ruin by the Countess' many supports and suitors. Typically worn up or at least bound, her hair has a color and tone slightly reminiscent of un-ground coffee though it undeniably has more shine to it than any coffee beans ever have. Despite what one might expect of a woman who spends a great deal of her time dealing with political and mercantile business, Rika has a fit and well-muscled body that she does well to hide using voluminous clothing and apparel.

Mental Description
Charming and polite, Hotsume Rika is perhaps the furthest thing from what one might expect from a cunning industry mogul that is said to indisputably rule the Tea County. Her delicate appearance and affable demeanour would suit a court princess much more closely than a strong and independent mind which is capable of out-thinking some of the savviest criminals and merchants in both the Wind and Tea Countries but that assessment is one of Rika's greatest weapons against the world that she runs. Loyal to herself and her country first and foremost, the Lady of Tea has made a career out of gutting those foolish enough to try and take advantage of the guise that she wears at court. The truth of the Countess, however, is a person who cares very deeply for her nation and for her people... and is for that reason willing to perpetrate any evil to ensure their prosperity even though such acts disgust her. Time and time again she has buried friends, lovers and even family to safeguard her position as the protector of Tea and by extension the nation itself.[/col][/legend]

<SIZE size="150">Tea Country Foreign Relations:
Tea has a trade agreement with Sunagakure. Located east of Wind Country, it takes a ship 2 days to cross the bay from Soons Haven to Kurosawa City when travelling at 6 knots. The distance is about 270 miles, slightly longer than the width diameter of tea Country itself. Travel by water is preferred to travel by land due to the roving bandits that traverse the countryside. North of Tea Country is Fire Counted, another vaunted powerhouse that Tea Country never achieved trade relations with because of the dangerous countryside necessary to traverse to reach the country borders. Overall, Tea is willing to trade with anyone and would likely break agreements. Many of the merchants are happy to trade with shinobis in particular because Hidden Villages offer a wealth of resources and they do not discriminate against nukenins but their prices tend to climb when performing sales, many call it a confidentiality tax that most actually honour.

Kurosawa City - Capital of Tea CountryWhen people in other countries speak at length about "Tea Country" it is often a safe assumption that they are speaking in particular about Kurosawa City as it is indisputably the beating heart of the country's bustling industry and strong trade economy. Built at the very southern tip of the country into a natural bay area, Kurosawa City was founded in 85 BE shortly following a massive boom in the economy from Water Country several years before that and the founding of Soon's Haven two decades prior. Even though Soon's Haven had the advantage of being founded first, Kurosawa City saw the success that their rival city would never see simply due to the country that they were built in. Whereas life in the Wind Country was a hard existence that required it's people to battle the very land itself on a daily basis to survive, Tea Country possessed a great deal more fertile land and a great deal more abundant fresh water. It was because of this that Kurosawa City rapidly overtook Soon's Haven as the primary trading hub on that side of the main continent (though Soon's Haven would inevitably rise to join together with them to form the Trade Alliance at the end of the Early Modern Era). It was not until the past few decades that specific trade interests through Hotsume Rika focused on Sunagakure, not that trade between Soons was absent prior to her intervention but the wares were focused on the needs and perceived wants of a shinobi where there was no attempt to fill that market before and the wares were significantly more utilitarian.
    • The Shipyards - "Old Kurosawa"
The Shipyards, or alternatively referred to by some as simply "the docks", are by far the oldest buildings in the city as the residential and more land-based mercantile districts slowly sprang up around those bustling docks as time went on. Sometimes referred to as "Old Kurosawa" or "Old Town", the Shipyards primarily dominate the western half of the city even though their docks extend over the entirety of the city which faces the natural bay that Kurosawa was built on. The Shipyards are perhaps the one part of the city that never rests. During the day career dockworkers and indentured workmen alike can be seen loading and off-loading various boxes and shipments which are being transferred in the ports. Referred to as Labor Houses, these clans of career workmen pride themselves on their quick, efficient and most of all trustworthy handling of goods and go to great lengths to compete with each other for contracts to work with various shipping companies which have goods which pass through the city. While work on unloading shipment can continue into the night hours for crews which are slower at their work than others, it is typically the taverns and brothels which are most busy during the wee hours. Full to the brim of sailors and workmen who are looking to relax or find a good time after long days of work, the owners of some of the busier taverns in the Shipyard are amongst the wealthiest men in the city-- although you might not know it from the look of their establishments which are almost always in constant disrepair from drunken fighting and constant parties. Sadly the Shipyards are also home to one of the saddest aspects of the city; the homeless and the jobless. Pitiable men and women who for one reason or another have lost their occupation and any fortune they might have had, these "dock bums" as they're referred to are often a source of cheap but unreliable labor for ship captains too poor or too foolish to hire one of the more well-established Labor Houses.

Sometime between signing autographs, pushing off throngs of fangirls and kissing babies, they needed to absorb all of that within the week. Easy for shinobi of their calibre. At the end of the week, they would be contacted again, this time with a summons. Conference room 26F of the Torre Celeste in full combative gear at 7 am the following morning. Anyone late would be locked out and disqualified; no exceptions.

——

On the dawn of the new day, room 26f would be open to all nine. It would feel slightly reminiscent of their academy days, a time far gone for some of the fighters elect, as they entered through the plain conference doorway. It would be obvious they were to take one of nine grey and wood basic chairs situated around a long black table loaded with fresh breakfast foods and fruit. The far wall had a trio of windows overlooking the village outside and a single morse painting of a vase of dying flowers. There was nothing else of note.

At seven sharp, just as promised, a white-haired woman would enter, lock the door with a double bolt and if anyone was late nothing more would be said of them.

She was Chigusa; a kunoichi of average height, slim, with a trim athletic build, that one only achieved with a lifetime of exercise. In honour of the occasion, she had taken care of every aspect of her dress and donned a smartly cut militaristic skirt-suit. An aura of no-nonsense oozed from her every movement, a temperament that was suited for handling such an array of shinobi. If there was talking, she would signal for it to end. "My name is Maebara, Chigusa, but you can all call me Ma'am. I will be guiding you through the selection process"

There was a moment as she took them in. Kumogakure had picked an interesting array of men as potential combatants. It was a disappointment to see none of the fairer genders had made the cut."You are all here because you feel you are an accomplished fighter and worthy of representing Kumogakure no Sato in the first World Martial Arts Tournament in the country of Cha no Kuni. How refined your battle ability is, is not under question. To us, you are all capable of achieving victory for our village and it is based on those criteria why you are all here," she addressed the group in a clear, steady voice that indicated years of public speaking. Her yellow eyes glided over the contestants, passively reading their expressions during a measured pause before she carried on.

"As you must all be aware, events like these have a history of drawing individuals with terrorism and chaos in mind. Some are subtle, turning villages upon each other in a way that leaves little trace, while others make wanton destruction. The last in Sand was a shit-show. We of Kumogakure must be able to overcome any scenario thrown at us in order to show the strength of our nation. Those chosen will be the public face of our village and on the frontline, and so, there are expectations." With a flourish, out came the booklet all nine had been given at the start. She brandished it like a prophet would hold his holy book, fierce and believing. "While at the tournament, our champions will be expected to show the moral fortitude that reflects our nation. We will also require that you be a model shinobi. That means your reputation is our reputation. You need to learn, live, eat and breath the twenty-five essential rules listed in here." Another scan of the room, just to be sure they were all listening and taking her seriously. If not the literal book would be thrown at them. "I'm sure you can all manage such a feat since that's part of your normal on-duty restrictions." Yeah, right.

The speech continued, touching onto one of the more aspects of a tourney like this one. At this point, anyone who had refused to just not and smile had gotten a ball withering stare of hatred. "This tournament presents an opportunity for Cloud to make potential allies with the country of Tea and other nations and strength then bonds with our current ones. Our chosen must be sensitive to cultural differences, keep your ears open and always err on the side of politeness. In these cases, and these cases alone, you may be forgiven for breaking the rules." Once again she let that sink in. If the moment called for it., or if they risked alienating an ally then they could sleep, drink or party their way back into the good books all they liked. The big word was IF.

It was time to get on to the main event, the part they were surely most excited for. "In addition to your list of expectations, your basic dossier had information on the eight other people in the room here with you with the request that you studied each and every one. Ideally, you have not failed to do so, as it will be costly to you."

Chigusa gestured towards the back of the room where a trio of doors that had definitely not been there before had appeared. They were plain to look at and numbered one through three in green paint. "You will be split into three teams of three and run through an obstacle course of sorts. As I touched upon before, events like these can draw dangerous sorts, a fact we have seen in the past. And so, the selection process has been designed not only to view your competitive strength but your ability to work with your fellow team members under stress to overcome different scenarios. The purpose of the dossier was to give you some inkling of your teammate's abilities before we begin. "

"Team one will be, Kaze Santaru Kouin, Tsuyoshi Kiri (Hasegawa), Tsuyoshi Junko. Team two will be, Maki Kazumi, Okada Kaji and Shieo. Team three will be, Shouyu Hoshi, Hachiashi Haji, Rikutsuchi Miraku. If there are any questions and concerns, this is your time to speak them."

Haji had never felt more popular. When he had signed up for the tournament selection process, he was sure he would be chosen to at least contend for one of the three positions, but he never considered that Kumo would be using them as public figures to bolster the Kumo community and their love for the village. Glory to Kumo and all of it's allies and all that.

After being relatively tickled about becoming literally famous over night, Haji became annoyed after a day or so of being hassled for autographs and tips and tricks for fighting. He was used to his anonymity and being able to slip through the village to the outside without needing to muscle his way through a crowd of people who thought they knew him. He had begun going out with his face wrapped up and his arms concealed beneath a thick cloak in order to get through the town unmolested.

The morning had finally arrived for him to report to the Sileo. He had recieved his letter from a strange cat dressed as a pilot that he had pat questioningly while reading through the information that had been given to him. It would seem he had signed on for something much larger than he had realized. He honestly thought he was just going to get to fight some strong people, but there were some stipulations he had not been expecting. He had stewed on these firm rules for some time before the cat returned with his summons to the Torre, this time he pat the cat on the head and smirked. At least he wouldn't need endure too much without recompense; he would get to fight someone soon.

Haji pulled on his most basic looking battle gear; grey combat pants, a battle vest that had been conveniently modified to allow all six of his arms free movement, combat sandel's that allowed for stealthy movement, his combat belt that contained his utility tools and poisons, and finally his headband which he wore tied behind his neck so that it covered his throat.

He ate a quick breakfast, some oatmeal and rice with apple and a sprinkle of cinnamon for flavor. Then he was out the door. Luckily it was early enough that most people were still asleep, Haji arrived at the Torre early, and found his way up the tower tot eh aforementioned room. He presented his letter as he walked into the room and sat at a chair around the table. He was the first to arrive, and he was prepared.

As the others showed up Haji would eye them up and down. He knew some of them, and others he knew of. Hoshi and Kiri were there which surprised Haji to find that he was strangely proud of them. The gate keeper from his return after three years was there too, a notorious shinobi, especially amongst the ANBU. Even Junko had made his way into the tournament, which gave Haji a nervous feeling in his stomach.

When the officiator finally began her speech Haji listened silently. She prompted them to follow the rules in the rulebook without question, Haji was fine with that, he could follow rules to a T, he was an ANBU operative after all. Then he looked at the dossier on all of his fellow combatants, then he looked at his own and almost burst out laughing. They had labeled him "The BEAST" of Kumo as if he had named himself that. He loved it.

Then the teams were announced, Haji was grouped with Hoshi, he gave the kid a wink. He wasn't sure who his other team mate was however, he eyed him and then his dossier before giving him a quick nod as well. Haji leaned back in his chair and looked at the ceiling. 'What have I signed myself up for?" He sighed.

“There’s no use in crying over spilled tea.” That’s how the saying goes, right? Well, you couldn’t have told Kaji Okada otherwise after his twelfth time practicing the Tea County’s traditional tea ceremony. It was one of the many customs and practices Kaji spent the last week practicing, all in preparation for the oncoming tournament. Sure, most of the other candidates were probably honing their edges for the competition, trying to achieve their final gains before being tested in battle. But, for such a well-practiced shinobi as Kaji, what could be gained in a week’s time that he had not learned in the quarter-century dedicated to his profession? His past and profile spoke for itself; what he desired now was not skill, but preparedness to handle the reputation of not one, but three countries. So the last week was spent acquiring knowledge on the host nation and practicing the ways of their foreign culture.

After the last debacle involving the collaboration of the major shinobi villages, it was most-suspicious that a nation like the Tea Country wanted to invite so many potential threats onto their soil. As Kaji delved into the literature provided in his dossier, he began to consider the motives involved— most particularly, this Rika Hotsume figure. With the country’s stability relying so heavily on that single woman, any collusion to create trouble during the gathering would likely involve her; either as a target of her lessers or quite possibly as a provocateur. Either way, The Tea was looking to gain some notoriety from this tournament.

And so the week passed just like every week before it. On the morning of, Kaji arose early to the sound of the coffee pot he programmed the night before echoing its chime through the household. He started so early that even his beloved was still lying asleep in their bed. Sky blue tresses peeked out from the covers pulled mostly overhead. Kaji considered how much of this had to do with her as he stood by the closet, dressing in layers of his usual attire. Sure, Kaji had a laundry list’s worth of reasons why he sought a permanent residence at the Hidden Cloud, but it all boiled down to the bond he shared with her. And now, in order to be with her Kaji became a willing participant in a grand fight for sport— the World Martial Art’s Tournament. Well, it was mostly the Hokage’s doing, as Lord Umashiashikabihikoji told Kaji he’d have to participate in order to gain Stone’s approval for relocating for good. “Wear the banners of the alliance” were his words, to be exact. Kaji hated fighting for sport, but if it meant a life with his bluebird he would have fought anyone. As he clasped his trusty Eelspine saber to his belt, he fantasized about stabbing Raiden himself in the eye if it meant a life with his ladylove, Blue. There was no challenge he’d turn down.

Kaji arrived at the predestined room long before the required time. He took the opportunity to look over daily reports from the Torre Celeste en route to his office for later in the day. After all, his work never stopped, not even for an occasion such as this. On came his peers, many he knew by name and more that he knew by profile, but not personally. The first was a lad Kaji only heard of in rumors and written reports of his antics— he was instantly recognizable for his extra appendages. But rather than focusing too much on the peculiarity to Haji, Kaji paid the woman in white his undivided attention. She certainly demanded that attention, and with a stern attitude, she sought to wrangle the candidates like a tamer in a zoo exhibit, though it wouldn’t be so easy.

The well-traveled Kaji Okada made a studious effort to not stand out among the other candidates, in fact, the only thing about him to not reflect the standard Kumogakure look was the ornate sword on his waist. Perhaps his trademark scowl was known as well. He had come so far to reach this point, but all these people needed to notice was the red symbol of Kumogakure painted on the flat black head protector he wore. Crimson cloth would blow in the breeze behind him as he charged at every coming obstacle. That was all he needed to tout his strength and potential; the rest would be shown by his deeds on the day.

Let’s go.

Having spent most of his time in the Academy, ever since he was a Student all the way to being a Chūnin. Shieo lived and breathed the texts, study and encouraging the growth out of prosperous new students through the doors every day.
Ever since the day he had initially signed up to be a representative, he suspected they wouldn't have taken him seriously with the registration~ after-all, he wasn't anything necessarily special. In-fact, he often fell under radar everyday to the world. So when an animal strode through the doors of his classroom, catching him with either feet perched on his desk and hopped up onto his lap. Carrying a letter addressed to him, he was a little (very) surprised by the turn of events. With the information that the Main-Branch, specifically Yuii and the other teachers were elected to designing the future trials he had to face; it sort of dawned on him why he was being conveniently left out of everything. While sifting through the rather abundant amount of information that was held within' the booklet; the young man heaved a hefty sigh. "Well... This is a rather surprising turn of events~" Casting a gaze to the cat, he arched a brow. "Don't s'pose Yuii had a hand in this~ Nevertheless, it would be disrespectful not to show. Besides, I might surprise myself."

Perhaps the most ill-driven of "The Nine" Shieo had prepare himself, with incredible alacrity and foresight in his weaknesses over the past little while. Despite the tournament, he had his own volition to account for such progression. Now it had become ever more prevalent in his life to continue such training.

On the morning of the meeting, Shieo had invested in his usual morning routine. Thus digging through the mess of his apartment, creating coffee; situating coffee capsules for later and filling himself up with some extra food. He figured, of all things he was going to need the energy to keep up with what was to come; no amount of foresight was needed to confirm such a feeling either.
Afterwards, he situated himself with his usual adornments of grey shinobi slacks, his Chūnin Flak Vest and a series of tools and the kunais he had developed with some aid. Finalizing his rather bleak get-up with his shined Kumogakure Headband over his forehead. All that was left, was to actually get to the Silo.

At the time of his departure to the meeting rooms, it was still quite dark out. A habit drilled into him from his years of being an instructor; get up early, work late. So he did exactly that, once he had arrived and made his way to the meeting room he had wandered off into the corner of the room. Sat back and closed his eyes~ figuring the extra few hours of sleep afore the allotted meeting time had begun. Having been quite confident at the matter of waking up in time; he dozed off.

Few hours passing, his ears perked at the sounds of the doors sliding open; and thus his eyes too slipped open into their typical half-lidded appearance. "Hnn~ Time already." he muttered to himself; wandering over to a seat and plopped down- Figuring it would be pretty easy to go unnoticed among the dossier of exceptional shinobi, he didn't invest much effort in remaining out-of-sight and out of mind.
Upon the arrival of the woman he knew unfortunately quite well from work, he sort of slinked down into his seat a little bit more to remain out of her mind. During the time she spoke and commanded his ears; it was a battle of his mind- Having almost developed a skill of half-listening to her~ It still unfortunately, made his hairs stand up. He knew for the most part what she was talking about; it was all written in their booklets. It wouldn't be like the village to leave such critical information only to ears of interpretation.

Nearing the end of her speech, he had closed his eyes and prepared himself mentally. He recognized a number of the faces~ all of them were incredible at what they did. Even the others of samey ranks to him, he was here to prove to himself his progression~ but at the same time, he wanted to be proud to be a Kumogakure shinobi; all while the village being proud he was one too.

All that was left was in his mind... Be prepared Shieo, this is a test even the best are going to struggle with~ Can you keep up?

Kiri was somehow still sitting on the wooden walkway that served as the veranda outside his room. He had been living with his adoptive father’s family since his return, given a room of his own in the large Tsuyoshi estate, and frankly, he hadn’t settled in quite yet. He never had the need to have a 10-jo tatami sized room before, thinking on his last apartment that was only one big open space with his bed on one side, the kitchenette on another, a dresser, a small toilet and shower area, and then the doorway. At first, he wondered how he would arrange his things when he arrived in his new room, pushing the dresser from one corner to another, and then another, until he decided maybe the original position was the best after all. Then he had to put all his medical books and journals inside a large trunk that was next to the desk, but then he pushed them all near the sliding shoji doors that opened to the veranda so that there would be sufficient lighting whenever he studied or wrote. The rest, he simply gave up and even decided to just roll around the tatami flooring on the first night, indecisive of the futon location.

But that was a long time ago now. It may have just been a month, it felt like years ago. The walls have become too familiar that he knew his way around his room without stumbling, lest he rolls on the futon. However, that did not meant that he was finally settled. As he continued to sit still on the veranda, eyes out to the zen garden landscape that would greet every Tsuyoshi family member once they opened their shoji doors (for the house was laid out that way), he became ever more conscious about the missing piece in his heart.

He closed his eyes for a while, trying to commune, trying to do anything in his soulscape, but even that sanctuary of his was a void… the endless white was now nothing more than a panoramic black and distorted fields. Most of all, he could only call out but no one would answer. It pained him so, ever more since he left the hospital. More so than the scolding. And more than ever did he feel lost in his standing in life. If not for the Tsuyoshis, for Kahako, and for that Kouin (whom he has yet to fully really acquaint himself with), he may have gone back to that forest or perhaps found a better secluded place to finish what he started. There really was no reason anymore…

A tap on his hand wakes Kiri as he looks to the side. He finds a cat in an intricate costume, repeatedly tapping a paw on his hand as if its animalistic radar had somehow suspected the dark thoughts that swirled in his mind and attempted to pacify it. That or it was because of the parcel that it wanted to relieve itself with. Kiri decided on the latter, quickly taking it from the cat and thanking it before it departed. Little did Kiri know then that the parcel would perhaps be his ray of hope in this endless dark abyss he had fallen into.

As Kiri enters the designated room in Torre Celeste, his eyes caught a glimpse of the others who were chosen. He knew that there would be another way of sifting through the tournament representatives and he would just have to abide by the rules. Bowing in courtesy to those of higher rank in the room, Kiri would find a quiet place where he took a seat. He was a bit worried for the fact that he was in the same team as his adoptive father and his brother… his… recently discovered brother. He’ll have to learn to get along soon in order to complete this trial. For at the moment, while he felt empty and almost uninspired, there was that glimmer of hope brought by the tournament. As written in his application, this would be a chance for him to find those of the clan that had disappeared, and while his earlier intention was different, there was something from within him that was compelling him to go through with this.

“Kill every single one of them” the vindictive voice resonated inside his heart, but he would wear his mask well, his face unchanging as he would wait for others and smiling.

An alarm blared into the jounin's ears and his eyes shot up, Showtime. He would pull himself out of the bed and approach his closet; it was unsurprisingly filled with his classic black suit and tie attire, though pushing the hangers of suits aside revealed a jounin attire in what some would consider a trophy case. Father, I don't resent you for you actions; I resent you for never coming to find us. But I'll bring us both honor. The jounin gear belonged to his father, it had been quite tattered, but he had kept up usual maintenance of the gear to make sure it was up to present code, and slowly he slipped into it, feeling the power of his father begin to course through him. When he wore this gear he wasn't a stalwart Anbu, but a diligent jounin of a high caliber. And out the door he went.

The village had a certain air of seriousness to it on this day, he knew the Council sent out an announcement advertising the bring in combatants, but he never expected the village to be so seldom on the day that The Nine would meet face to face. Nervous Kou-san? A smile gleamed across his face, No, not nervous. Excited. He thrived greatly in a highly competitive setting; he would prove to the council that he was one of the best three choices to be deemed worthy of being a representative. It was moments like these that he had always trained his skills to the highest echelon, he was ready.

He reached the snowcapped tower of the Torre Celeste, once a bustlingly hub of activity, now felt quiet and vacant. Wasting no time, he entered the building and made his way to up the twenty-sixth floor. Most people would've come to this place during their academy days, but for someone like Kouin who spent his academy days in Kirigakure, he didn't comprehend the importance of the room itself other than of the sake of the selection process, which was enough for him.

He was handed a copy of a dossier upon his entry, he immediately started to shift though until he reached the page which had team pairing on its, Santaru Kaze Kouin, Tsuyoshi Kiri and Tsuyoshi Junko, interesting... He took a seat closet to the front and began to drift into a deep thought; he had just came across some interesting information about him and Kiri that left him in disbelief, could he really have had a half brother this entire time? He began tapping a digit on the table until a militaristic women entered the room and shut and locked the door. And that's the curtain call He began to focus all his attention on the women now, no one else in the room really mattered at this point, except for his team.

She began by stating simple facts, facts that pretty much everyone there were already aware of, of everyone else in the room, especially his fellow Anbu. Though everyone here might not have recalled the last event to transpire in Suna; that nearly caused a war to be waged between Kumo and Suna, and after the events with the Suna shinobi Kaen, relations haven't really improved much. He was unsure of everyone else's knowledge on foreign politics, but the Countess of Tea bothers him much like the Otokage bothered him before. Everyone from Tea country gave off a weird, mysterious air around them. Not much was know around them, but he would make sure to gather information while they were there.

The end of the speech has appeared to come to fruition, the women announced the teams and showed them their respective doors. He had no questions, no concerns, no doubt in his mind that his was ready. He stood from his chair with an air of sheer determination that could empower even the meekest of spirits, "The stage is set, our performance begins." Without hesitation he approached door one, and pushed it open, and awaited his teammates to follow his lead.

Miraku had been pleasantly surprised when the list of only nine shinobi to participate in the world tournament from the village was announced and included his name. It seemed they wanted to hold some kind of preliminaries in order to find out which of The Nine would be good enough to fill the only three slots available to each country. With word abuzz around the village, it seemed like all nine of them had become more popular overnight. It certainly made his life more difficult than he had planned, but he knew this could be an outcome for putting himself out there like that. As someone who wasn't super socially adept in crowds, it made things a little awkward, but honestly, it was good training for his social game. Later that same day, a cat dressed strangely had arrived at his home with information pertaining to the rules the participants would need to follow, information about the other villages, and a collection of information on Tea Country, which would come in handy as a place Miraku had yet to visit. But the most important piece was the dossier on the other eight participants from Kumogakure. This was useful information for him, as he didn't honestly know that many people very well; the type of person to work more on his own, or undercover as an ANBU.

Reading through it, he could see The Nine had been separated into three teams, which seemed odd for prelims for a tournament involving one-on-one combat, but he wasn't one to question the council of their village. The first two teams seemed strong. A Jounin and a Sennin on the same team, accompanied by a Med-Nin in Training, who seemed to be related to the Sennin in someway. Their team containing medics would certainly be advantageous in combat. The second team contained two Jounin and a Chuunin; who for some reason, seemed very mysterious with the lack of information on him. And finally, his own team; himself and two Chuunin. This definitely made Miraku feel like he was at a disadvantage, but you could never really judge a shinobi by their rank these days. Both of them were Kinjutsu users, making him feel left out, but it felt like his team was overall very Taijutsu heavy. It worried him a little, but hopefully, he would be able to make up for that with his Nin and Genjutsu. After reading everyone's "Reason For Fighting", along with his own information, it was apparent that the Council had done some editing of their own to add some cohesion to their statements, as well as promote nationalism.

For the next week, Miraku spent time preparing himself. Training, eating and resting to make sure his body was in top physical condition. Also putting plenty of time into memorizing what he could on the information provided to him; though the rules weren't entirely too different than those he was made to follow as an ANBU. As the week rolled over, the cat arrived once more with a summons for the next morning. Miraku's excitement grew, swelling up within him as a smile spread across his face, unable to hide it. It was finally time for him to see where he stood against his fellow shinobi. If he could manage to make it onto the final three, then he could truly test himself against the best of the best; something he'd wanted to do for a long time. Sticking to his master's rules was tough, and he wanted a break from them for once, and this was it.
--
Waking the next morning bright and early, Miraku went straight to his closet, pulling out his Main Branch combat attire. This included his basic long sleeved shirt, cargo pants, Kumo vest, and all his weaponry and equipment. Putting them on, he grabbed his coat and put it on over top to cover up in his usual way. This made him less conspicuous but also hid his movements slightly. Last but not least, he grabbed his village headband from his side table, wrapping it around his neck and tying it up so he could leave if hanging there to show off their village symbol for all to see, not comfortable wearing it around his head. After a quick meal, he headed into the heart of the village to Torre Celeste where he could have to head up to the 26th floor in order to participate in the preliminaries which he had been so excited for.

Entering the conference room, a few of The Nine who had arrived earlier than him, sat in their seats. Judging based on the pictures from the dossier, only one of his teammates was there before him; the one named Haji. Also seated were a few others who all resembled their pictures in one way or another. Taking a seat at one of the empty chairs, Miraku would wait, seated until the rest of the participants who still wanted to be a part of this arrived and took their seats until 7 AM, when a woman with short white hair walked in, closing and locking the doors behind her. She would then begin speaking, telling them all her name, and explaining the basic pretense of what was going on here; discussing what would be expected of them, and how they would need to follow the rules and represent their village properly. As things were coming to a close, she pointed to the back of the room where three doors had appeared, leaving Miraku curious about them. She explained what would happen next, and as she finished up her explanation, she listed off the teams once more, and told them now was the time to gather up at their door, giving them a chance to speak quickly before things were to get underway. Standing up from his seat, Miraku headed over to the doors, getting together with his team, waiting for everyone to gather up so they could possibly speak to each other, given they were open to it before heading in.

It was a strange twist of fate. That is to be considered a spy for the village and yet also about to be in the spotlight of not just the country, but the whole world. The feeling of nerves fluttered around his stomach. Butterflies? Could he be feeling butterflies or termites at this current moment?

He had lost some sleep over the idea that he would be seen more than he usually liked to be. But it couldn’t be helped if he had to really find out more about the other villages. That was his prime mission in all of this, despite whatever the dossier had changed his reasons to fight. Whatever Mother Kumo wanted to tell the other villages what he was there for.

The week before the event seemed to fly by with him tweaking his puppets. Every augment had to be correct and fit in the right place. Every nook and cranny had to be protected against any kind of weakness. It was more important for him to not look like he was still new to this whole “being a puppet” thing that he could be considered a novice. Despite that he was still picked oven literally dozens of others. A higher power was looking over him be it deity or higher ranked shinobi.

The puppeteer would arrive at the academy he graduated way too long ago. The memories of where he was picked on, or when he had his first sweetheart. Memories like that were still intact despite all the trauma and bodywork done to him. He did remember them saying they had managed to give him some kind of memory tweaks and upgrades… but he wasn’t sure. Maybe it would come to him eventually.

The hallways were still the same as when he was younger. But he was much older, taller, and also half the man he used to be because… well he was missing his limbs but that didn’t matter. He was still a shinobi of Kumogakure who grew up here under the cult of techpriests he was a part of. He managed to get away from it all… but he still prayed before every fight and mission for his puppets to work.

He arrived in the building to see it was already filled with all kinds of people. He didn’t feel like he was the oldest in this, but looking to see there were many who he figured had graduated way after him. It definitely looked like quite the eclectic and eccentric bunch of people. Then again most shinobi were unique in their own way. Not many of those emotional eye thief types being bred amongst the best the village could give them.

Amongst the nine contenders stood a woman who seemed to be the official when it came to picking the contestants Kumogakure was going to send. He couldn’t help but size her up, as he would size up every other person in the room. While he opinions would remain kept to himself until needed (or until it was written up). But she seemed really serious.

He would listen to her words, taking them in and taking note of all the points she made. Interesting that Cloud was using this as a way to build up their relations with other villages and not just to show off their superior power. But he didn’t want to pry into what the Raikage had planned in having so many allies. Having allies did gain and take away potential clients after all.

It was then they were told they would all have partners they would be pairing up with. Kazumi was to be paired with a Kaji and a Shieo. Hopefully he could at least keep as many of his abilities hidden from them. The main priority was getting through so even if he had to show off a move or three it wouldn’t matter. They would have to keep each other’s abilities secret until the tournament… but still a little bit of observation was healthy, right?

Tap, Tap, Tap.

A pen was tapping against his windows. Hoshi was writing in his journal to free his thoughts one morning. Soon enough a cat in a pilot’s outfit repeated the cadence of his tapping. Hoshi paused, looking at the feline and slowly opened the door. He said nothing, only giving a strange look toward the kitten. Hoshi took the parliament from the cat and unrolled it to read its contents. It appeared, out of all the applications, Hoshi had been selected! The boy gripped the paper tightly, crumbling it into his fist. He was shocked, yet excited. The boy took a stroll through the town that day.

Almost everyone greeted him. Most of the lot, doubted the young Shinobi as he was one of the youngest to apply and most likely the least renown. He paid no mind to the negative and positive influences of the village, if he did, he’d most likely punch out a guy who claimed he would get wrecked by a jounin or sennin. During Hoshi’s time though, he had participated with most of the other combatants at some point.

“One our of nine?”

He thought to himself aloud, stopping by one of his favorite hamburger shops.

Old man: “Hey Kid! The usual?”

“Yes, please.”

Hoshi took a seat, his head was hung low. His thoughts were heavy about the trials to come within a week. Would he last? He was going to battle with the best of the best, was he reallt ready?

Old man: “Hey... Kid. Why ya so down? Ya know, the whole shop heard ya got elected for that world martial arts tournament! We’re rootin for ya!”

“Thanks! I’ll keep that in mind. I just, wouldn’t want... I wouldn’t want to get my hopes to high.”

Old Man: “Take it to go. Ya got some training to do right?”

“Yeah. Thanks.”

Hoshi tried to pay but the old man refused his coin. He shook his head and shoo’d the young chuunin. Hoshi smiled widely and bowed fervently to the old man thanking him. Hoshi made his way out, he was thankful to sign autographs for the youth and even newly students into the academy. Maybe they were amazed that a fourteen year old would be considered for such a job. Maybe he gave them hope?

Throughout the week, Hoshi never skipped a second of training. If anything, the boy trained harder than ever. He made sure to keep up with his meals and calories, and sleep enough to maintain complete healthiness. The seventh day, another furry messenger summoned him to the Torre Celeste. Hoshi awoke as usual, morning workout, a large meal, and his attire. He wore a Kumogakure, white vest teamed with red and blue lining and design. It was sleeveless, with an open chest revealing a chainmail. Under that was a navy blue dry fit to prevent cold sweat and heat his body. He wore fitted pants, black ninja sandals that were extremely lightweight. Lastly, Hoshi wore his Kumo headband across his forehead.

He took the normal way to the Torre, when most would avoid the public. He assumed the others were over all the fame. But Hoshi was just starting to get a feel for it all and he actually liked the attention. The negatives influenced his spirit to prove them wrong, while the positives charged him up to do his best. There was a lot more on the line than just him, and his fighting capability. The reputation of his very country hung in the balance and if he was selected, he’d have to represent more than just himself. Finally he arrived at the Torre, tapping a button for the higher up floors.

Hoshi reaches the 26f, having been one of the last enter. He was given a pamphlet full of information. It was detailed, but Hoshi paid thorough attention to the rules and regulations. Later the dossier went over teams, his of which consisted of Haji and an unknown Miraku, little did he know he had already been on an anbu specific mission with ‘Soku’ before. Hoshi looked over to Haji, and returned his wink with a head nod, and then looked over to Miraku. It appeared they shared speed and taijutsu in common. But he seemed more versatile in fighting style, Hoshi took note of this.

Soon a white hair lady began to spoke. When she did, she seemed totally focused and upfront. Hoshi made sure he sat upright and attentive in his seat. After listening to her words, he followed to the corresponding door with his teammate.

A soft hand rested in Junko’s hand as a head rested upon his chest. His wife could always feel the years of swordsmanship that wailed upon Junko’s body. Her finger slightly traced over his chest in a circular motion as silence filled the heated room. A certain stench filled the room. it wasn’t a bad smell, but it would require a talk of birds and bees if one of the children smelt it.

”Time for you to go sweetie. Your suit is already ready. I’ll go get breakfast started.” Karin said before lifting from the bed.

Seeing that she was left wide open, Junko took the opening she left him and slapped his wife’s backside.

”Ouch!” Karin said before biting her lip seductively. ”Better stop before you end up late.”

Watching his wife put on one of his dress shirts to cover herself, Junko smiled as his clothes were never his own no more. As Karin left the room, she called to the kids announcing that she’d be fixing breakfast. Cheers sounded throughout the main house of the Tsuyoshi estate causing Junko to chuckle a bit.

After getting ready and coming down the stairs in his normal suit attire, Junko was met with kids already scarfing down food and a nice breakfast sandwich fixed to go for his departure. ”Thank you.” Junko said before Karin leaned in and gave him a kiss on the cheek.

”Yuck!” Rintaro said shaking his head.

”Boy, how do you think you was created?”

”Whaaat?” The twins said in unison as Junko laughed. Receiving a hit on the shoulder to cut it out from Karin, Junko smiled. ”I’m off, I love you all.”

”Good luck!”

”Knock em dead!”

”I’ll try not to.” Junko said before rubbing both the twins head with a single hand. Making his way out, Junko began on his breakfast sandwich as he departed for the Torre.

Entering the Torre through a window on the 25th floor to avoid the crowd and not waste time with fan hype, Junko then continued to the 26th floor. He knew the floors all too well from his younger days. He even knew where the coffee was being made at. Now that he was older, he could finally enter the small room and have some.

Walking into the designated conference room, it filled with the other eight contenders. ”Goodmorning.” Junko said to everyone while also noticing the young Tsuyoshi’s. Taking a seat and receiving a dossier, Junko finished off his sandwich while drinking his coffee. Then, a military like woman entered and kicked things off immediately.

It was apparent that Kumogakure was taking more precaution dealing with foreign affairs due to the last incident with suna. Something about that incident still left a certain distaste in Junko’s mouth involving suna. It was part of the reason he’d be going to meet with this kyujin of the byakko clan as well.

Little did the man know, Junko’s feline companions had already began getting intel on him and would be reporting back soon. Hopefully, they’d even dig things up on this Kaen guy as well. Reading the reports, apparently the man broke out of prison and escaped the village. Things weren’t looking good for suna relations.

As the woman finished her speech and the teams were announced, Junko took the last sip of his coffee and moved forward with Kouin and his son Kiri. Giving a thumbs up of “Do your best” to Hoshi, Junko was interested to see just how far he had come since Junko’s departure. Junko hadn’t gotten to really focus on Hoshi, but he was told of the boys training at the Tsuyoshi estate.

Today was a day for the history books, at least as a sub-note. The pure energy in the room was astounding to one such as Chigusa. A weaker willed shinobi might have bucked under the awe of being around such strength. It was by raw personality and what one could call charisma that she kept her bearings, however. It was laughable that she was giving the potential world tournament champion a lecture on etiquette, preparedness and dress sense, but the Main branch sennin had been very clear. Somehow, the blue-haired woman had thought some of these fine young gentlemen might be adverse to playing trading card hero to the village of Kumogakure. As Chigusa looked over the nine men, ranging from ages of distinguished aura to that of youth energy and all between, she could not fathom such a problem. They would all listen and do exactly as they were told like good shinobi should.

There was a moment of crickets as she finished her speech clearly in awe.

There seemed to be no questions, as she looked from man to man expectantly. some muttered between them, others pre-emptively stood to flee through the doorway. The snowy-haired woman crossed her arms and smirked broadly, pleased with how smoothly everything was going. "Good, I'm pleased to know our information was sufficient enough to quench your thirst for knowledge. Goodluck to you all, and may Raiden or whatever god you lay allegiance to watch over you. We will be," she announced. With that, Chigusa turned heel and marched from the room, leaving the rest to find their way to their respective rooms.

Somewhere, in the tower, a deep guttural roar that could have passed for thunder sounded.

-----------------------

Meanwhile, sitting comfortably in a cushioned desk chair within a dark room at an undisclosed location, the Raikage was watching everything as it unfolded. For days he had witnessed all of the hype that had been building in the village since the nine finalists were chosen to compete for positions in the world tournament. It had been all over the news recently, unavoidable for any citizen of Kumogakure, let alone the leader. Conversations could be overheard anywhere you went discussions that he could not participate in. Students and veterans alike were excited, many picking favourites and arguing over which participants would come out on top. Ayumu was by no means immune to the excitement, but as Raikage he had to force himself to remain impartial. It didn't matter who he knew and who was unknown, nor did his past experiences with the participants. Each was to be judged by their performances during the trials.

The Raikage leaned back in his chair as he observed the various monitors before him. The picture on most of the screens remained still for the time being, but soon they would come to life. Today the nine would be tested and Ayumu would watch them all with careful consideration. Shifting his gaze slightly to the right, Ayumu returned his attention to another set of monitors. He had just finished watching Chigusa address the nine as well as a few brief interactions between the participants. Now they were splitting up into their respective groups and entering their rooms in which they would be sequestered for a time. Though it had been tempting, he had decided that he would not enter himself as a candidate, but that didn't mean he wasn't going to enjoy himself. For now, they would chat, but it wouldn’t be much longer... Rubbing his hands together with anticipation, Ayumu grinned knowingly. They had no idea what was in store for them, but he did. "This is going to be good..."

In the case of abilities that may have been missing or any other thing you MIGHT have applied for in the leeway time we were originally going to give, you may choose them for free. The Man to Beat: Kaji Okada!!!

So there you have it; nine shinobi gathering like a hand of cards at the table. The Hidden Cloud was playing a serious game and playing these cards close to the chest. The minds behind the game were thinking— so cleverly thinking. Kaji was just as busy though, in full speculation as the proctor vaguely explained what was expected of the competitors. It was all too easy to craft theories as to why the nine competitors were being divided by three. Sure, they were given a direct explanation but it was unlike a bureaucracy like The Cloud to provide you directives without a few ulterior motives and lies involved. Once the meeting was broken Kaji remained steadfast as the room began to stir.

“Fellow competitors,” the sound of Kaji’s voice held a similar commanding energy to the proctor when he called for their attention. “This might look like a team effort but you’ll be alone once you make it to the stage in Tea Country. We might be expected to work together for now— in fact, the ability to cooperate is imperative… But know that until there’s only three of us left, you should consider everyone here your rivals.” He could feel the energy shifting in the room as if it hadn’t already; it was the ignition of fires burning hot, the striking of spirits. “Regardless of what happens next, know that not everyone on your team will be chosen. Know that your rivals are already thinking about this— deciding how to beat you, and what it’ll take. Don’t let your guard down. Don’t allow your rivals to maneuver you into settling for anything less than your absolute best.”

It had been a long time since Kaji Okada was in such a position, competing to vie for his place at the table. In his past, competitions meant the right to live and prosper. Fighting meant the right to eat or to have a place lay his head at night. For nearly all of his designated rivals, this was merely about honor, fame, or gold. To Kaji, this was about his citizenship: needless to say, this was quite a change of pace. But for the hunter, this was a matter of his future at risk. His desire to succeed was just as intense as ever. The unshakable will of stone of his ancestors was showing through it all as he drifted out of the room first with conviction in each step. There was a spot on the stage for Kaji Okada, and you couldn't tell him otherwise.

- Kaji Okada has left the thread.

After the slew of excitement and seriousness washed throughout the room; Chigusa had made it quite clear the expectations that were held upon all Nine of them, each had their own reasons for being here; and suitably Shieo noted each ones expressions at the face of what was to come, or specifically what they weren't sure was to come. Beyond the understanding that it was an obstacle course, there was the added stresses that waylay them from the matter in which they were faced against each other, even indirectly~ And even more so, even the other two each of the champions had to work with. It was an unsettling predicament.

We're to work together, yet oppose one another; or at least that's the impression the village wants to leave. He thought; a hand tapped his chin subtly, almost comically with the implications it left. He wasn't entirely here to be better than everyone, for all he cared. He landed a spot here, so helping whoever he ended up with. With the best of his ability only seemed logical, they weren't enemies~ At least, he thinks they aren't.

Reaching up with his index finger he picked into the tear-duct of his eye and nearing the end, seemed to be about as ready to huddle up to the others and begin a game plan, on precisely what they don't know about.

"Good, I'm pleased to know our information was sufficient enough to quench your thirst for knowledge. Goodluck to you all, and may Raiden or whatever god you lay allegiance to watch over you. We will be," ~ he watched as she left, the dour-eyed expression never faltering, then upon the time they were given to cooperate. The first to stand was Kaji; shortly behind the man, Shieo himself had gotten up and walked to the same entryway as the Jounin; all while having a rather poor posture and walking stride.
“This might look like a team effort but you’ll be alone once you make it to the stage in Tea Country. We might be expected to work together for now— in fact, the ability to cooperate is imperative… But know that until there’s only three of us left, you should consider everyone here your rivals.”

As he anticipated; it wasn't much a surprise when his ally had made it outspoken. Given his demeanor, Shieo granted a simple shrug. And spoke with a monotone confidence. "Here for the ride, let's see where it takes us, huh... Guess we better get to the drawing board." Giving either of his allies a momentary glance.

As the proceedings went on and ended, Kiri couldn’t help but feel the energy in the room. Even if people weren’t jumping around in excitement, there was a whirl of tension that loomed over. But there wasn’t a shred of doubt in his mind, not even for a moment as he would approach Kouin and Junko.

Just then, he would hear Kaji announce something. The latter had changed since their meeting and he smirked at the declaration. It was common sense to know that one is born and dies alone. Teamwork is part of the journey and not the end. That is to say, otherwise often used this logic to manipulate and exploit others. But from Kiri learned in Kumogakure, it also meant being a family. And family, as Junko had taught him, would push each other to be their best, not constrain them.

As such, he would tell the two, “I wanted to say… ‘Use me to the best of the situation just to advance’ but I wouldn’t. I’ll simply make sure that at least one of us reach the top, me included.” It was a resolute confident choice of words. Perhaps too arrogant for some. But for Kiri, he thrives in his ideals and unless he thinks that way, he would be less confident of his own abilities, let alone his own inner strength.

Then he would proceed to the room of their trials.

Before Entering room one after Junko’s gesture to Hoshi, a sudden voice echoed throughout the meeting room. Looking back, it was apparent that Kaji was giving a fair warning to everyone.

It was simple really. Despite the teams, everyone was for themselves and would be during the tournament. You’ll be in the ring alone. Win alone. Or lose alone. Regardless though, you’ll still have the support of your fellow villagers. Overall Kaji was right and it was definitely something the younger ones needed to hear.

“I wanted to say… ‘Use me to the best of the situation just to advance’ but I wouldn’t. I’ll simply make sure that at least one of us reach the top, me included.”

Looking at Kiri and blinking a few times, Junko was now definitely glad Kaji said what he said because Kiri’s first thought was to simply be a tool. ”Shoot for the moon. If you miss, you’ll still land amongst the stars. In other words, everyone do your best.” Junko said before continuing into room one.

Tensions were high in the room and Hoshi felt the presence of every shinobi’s resolve through the thickness of the atmosphere. The militant white haired speaker concluded her speech. Hoshi began to wonder what this was all about, teams, separate rooms, and an obstacle course. He looked over to Junko and Kiri, who were on different teams than Hoshi but all here. It was surreal to think of himself to be surrounded by cloud’s most credible and astounding Shinobi.

His face would never quiver with doubt, but his mind remained inquisitive through the ordeal. He was truly overwhelmed with feelings at the moment but contained them and the stillness of his facial structure. Who will be cloud’s elect, should he really he here, is he even a contender? The doubt begin to fog up his mental clarity. The snow topped woman turned and exited, subsequently Hoshi heard a rumbling that resembled thunder. A omen? He’d tilt his head toward the general direction of the noise, and then to his corresponding door.

Just as he was heading to turn he stopped at hearing the words of Kaji Sensei. Hoshi listened with stiff antennas and reverberated with every word. It was just the fuel he needed for his blazing spirit to erupt in the pale blue flames of Cloud’s Handsome Devil! Even then, Hoshi knew he was truly out of place, amongst a league of some of the greatest to ever do it. And if he even somehow made it past this, there’s no telling what the other villages have to offer.

Hoshi nodded at Kaji’s competition and progressed toward his door. He seemed the first of his group to respond as he walked toward the large door. He pushed through to have the room revealed to himself.

Haji listened, and watched. Everyone in the room recieved their information and began speaking to one another, one of whom, Kaji, had made a stirring speech to encourage that everyone stand out rather than blend into their teams in a hope to send on of them onward to the world tournament. No, individual performance was key here, the benefit of the individual is the benefit of the group, or so it went.

Haji eyed his team one more time as everyone gathered up to move into their respective rooms, and he shot Kaji a sneer. He had hoped that the competition would be as fierce as he had heard it would, but this was more than he had hoped for, this would truly put them all to the test, and only the best of the best would remain.

"Well alright then" Haji said, finally uncrossing his arms and standing up. He moved toward the door for his team and pushed his way through following after Hoshi. No matter how this preliminary turn out, Haji would make it through to the world tournament, he swore it to himself softly, and his body quivered with excitement. The Hachimon would be satisfied this day, to win glory in the next.

It seemed there hadn’t really been that many people. Only nine were selected in all of this? They were that confident that they could find three or four people in the nine here? It was pretty ballsy in his own opinion. But whatever their thoughts were in choosing whoever they wanted it was their opinion.

Kazumi managed to identify who he was looking for based on the dossier that they were given. Okada Kaji and Shieo (who somehow had no last name despite everyone usually having last names) were to be his partners in all of this. It would be interesting to see how they managed to deal with the tasks at hand, despite how they seemed maybe… less than stellar? Of course, even Kazumi had trouble with movement while trying to use his puppet body.

There didn’t seem to be any questions, which was good because all it did was shorten the time it would take to get this one started. It would mean more time to get to know his team, and gauge what he was going up with. Even if he had to use just his puppets without the whole symbiosis thing it wouldn’t matter as long as he could understand how strong each person was.

However as he was about to head to the place, he would hear Kaji begin to speak, informing them of the information they kind of already knew. Everyone knew it would be one on ones when it came to the actual tournament. It would be foolish for something to think otherwise even before hearing the words Kaji thought to impart of them.

Kazumi would shrug and walk to the entrance of the room that he was designated to. He hoped that Kaji would not try to impart more of his “wisdom” through this stage as well.

As things came to a head, everyone was preparing to head out to their respective rooms, it seemed a few participants had words for the group before they made their leave. The words Kaji spoke obviously rang true for everyone here. Whether it was your full team, or anyone else, only three people were going to be making it to the final team for Kumogakure, so they all had to do their best to prove their worth. No one was truly a teammate yet, especially with the fact that the tournament was to be a one-on-one battle tournament. Of course, your teamwork would show your abilities as well as shine a light on your commitment to the village.

Normally, Miraku would have wanted to say something as well. Maybe something to throw off his opponents, but today he was too busy focusing on himself. He wasn't about to break his concentration and ruin his chances for this test. The last thing he needed right now was to doubt himself or his teammates. It was obvious they were rivals in this endeavor, but this trial was to be based on teamwork, so he was sure they wouldn't sabotage themselves by not being team players. Others also spoke their minds, while some kept silent, walking straight into their doorways.

Taking in a deep breath, a smirk crossed Miraku's face as he felt mentally prepared in that moment. Looking at his two teammates, he hoped he was in good hands. It certainly felt like the other teams were quite strong, but he wouldn't let that deter him at all. None of his teammates had anything to say just yet, and Miraku liked that. Save it for the next room; he thought to himself as he followed their lead, entering the door behind them to have it close behind him.

The air in the room was filled with a type of hyper tension, the kid when a room full of powerhouses; it was the sort of tension that hyped everyone for the events that were about to unfold. They were still facing each other, but now they were facing each other but together. It was an interesting turn of events that was for sure, the decision process intrigued the veteran Anbu. He got up from his chair with a determination, he was ready to face these challenges ahead of him and prove to the higher ups that he was a clear choice to being selected for the tourney. Kouin approached Door 1 with a resolve he hadn't felt in awhile, his hand rested on the knob for a moments.

You got this Kouin... Without another moment of hesitation he turned the knob and entered the room with his team, Let's get down to business boys. He grabbed the nearest chair and shut the door as the rest of his team entered with him.
