Mahashi Tea Shop was going through the normal afternoon lull when Uji made his way out of the front doors and toward his favorite spot for meditation. Making tea was nice and all, but it was something he had been doing his entire life. To make significant strides, Uji believed that he should not just stick with one skill. Plus, sitting underneath a tree and trying to clear the mind was fun.
Minutes passed and Uji was taking his seat underneath an unassuming oak tree. His mask stayed on, a constant reminder of his motivation. As he began clearing his mind, images and ideas floated in and out of his head. Leaves releasing their flavour when steeped in water, and the smile of the man who had once saved him. Moments passed and the images were few and far between, and Uji was now just listening to the sounds of nature. Crickets and cicadas, even the leaves rustling above.
Then, an emptiness fell over him, and filled his mind to the brim. Many minutes passed and his breathing was even and easy. As much as he tried to read and learn, it was important to focus on nothing every once in a while.
More minutes passed, and then, an image flew through his mind. A simple, small picture. It was a leaf sinking in the boiling water, further and further until it reached the bottom. Uji didn't like the idea, for some reason he couldn't quite articulate. He opened his eyes, his concentration now broken. The sun had fallen further down its daily path, which meant Uji had to return to the Tea Shop.
