Ninpocho Chronicles

Ninpocho Chronicles is a fantasy-ish setting storyline, set in an alternate universe World of Ninjas, where the Naruto and Boruto series take place. This means that none of the canon characters exists, or existed here.

Each ninja starts from the bottom and start their training as an Academy Student. From there they develop abilities akin to that of demigods as they grow in age and experience.

Along the way they gain new friends (or enemies), take on jobs and complete contracts and missions for their respective villages where their training and skill will be tested to their limits.

The sky is the limit as the blank page you see before you can be filled with countless of adventures with your character in the game.

This is Ninpocho Chronicles.

Considering Saito was not a shinobi of Konoha, administering him an exam to Genin took a different route than he would if they shared a village. Luckily someone of importance in Kumogakure had stayed by in Konoha as a diplomat, guardian, or whatever Touma and his squad of ANBU were up to nowadays. After a brief meeting with him, he informed him of his intention to give Saito a Genin exam. There was not a doubt in Tatsuo's mind that thought Saito was more than capable of becoming a Genin, considering he was well past the competency and skill as a shinobi than Tatsuo was at the time of reaching Genin. He wondered what they were feeding kids nowadays, they grew up so fast.

Tatsuo had woken up Saito before even the boy would normally wake up. Probably much to his surprise, he was quick to get him out to the forest's edge. Tatsuo was intentionally brief and dressed for combat, something he would usher Saito to do as well. All they had to do now was await Touma's arrival and then Tatsuo could finally explain his reasoning for waking up Saito so early.

"....Huh? Whassup, Shinrin-sens...?" the 9-year old blearily murmured, brought out of the precious few hours of sleep he needed to bounce around for the 18-or-so other hours of the day by Tatsuo. The older boy's serious demeanor woke him fully, surprising the child into careful obedience of his teacher's commands despite the early hour. The boy dressed equally briefly, his gear all packed and the sleeves on his little black leather combat jacket, green Kumogakure symbol prominently emblazoned on the back, hanging intentionally long so as to obscure his forearms and wrists. Loose black pants cover his legs, guaranteeing freedom of movement, while bandages protected his lower legs and a forest green t-shirt peeks out from underneath the jacket. A couple of pouches rest on his waist, along with several holsters full of weapons he'd been training with, not all immediately visible.

Remembering what Tatsuo said in the hotel about the Forest of Death and how it had dangerous wild animals there, the 9-year old could not be completely happy to find this place to be their destination. As much as he loved forests, some forests didn't love you back and any forest with the word "death" in it likely lacked the kind of affection Saito desired. Still, their being here undeniably involved training; what would Tatsuo have him do today? Why did it have to happen so early? When would they have breakfast? All of these questions the child wanted to ask, but somehow felt would be inappropriate for the mood. So he would quietly follow and stand with his teacher at the forest's edge, certain that all of his questions would be answered within the next few hours.

Shuusei Touma - ANBU Captain
NPC

Touma was the sole member of the ANBU group had that remained behind in Konoha. Given the circumstances in Konoha, he had decided it might be a good idea to keep an eye on the situation in hopes of having changes reported to Kumogakure a little sooner. The situation in Konoha felt slightly precarious to him as a Kage vanishing could easily do. For that reason he also felt it wise to stick around for Saito's sake as well, just in case. Fortunately, the young boy also had Tatsuo looking out for him near full time. Speaking of the Leaf Chuunin, he had come to Touma recently with a request. He wanted to give Saito a Genin exam. This wasn't completely unheard of. After all, Tatsuo had undergone his Chuunin exam in Kumogakure. By Touma's information about the young Cloud student, had he remained in Kumogakure, it was about time for him to take an exam anyway.

In order to acquiesce to Tatsuo's request, Touma had decided to allow the exam to take place so long as he observed it. Tatsuo would be permitted to proctor the exam and it would be legitimate so long as Touma agreed that the testing was adequate. For that purpose, Touma was meeting the two boys in the so called Forest of Death today. He had heard rumors about these particular woods and passing through them he couldn't help but be reminded of the Ancient Forest of Kumogakure. The trees looked just as old here and the lurking dangers sounded all too familiar. A perfect place for an exam. As Touma came upon Tatsuo and Saito he would nod to them as he approached.

"I will be observing today, but for the most part I will stay out of your way. Proceed when you are ready," he said, not letting on much more than Tatsuo had thus far As he neared the two, without stopping, he leapt into the treeline and disappeared from sight. Barring some necessity, he would not be seen again until the exam was finished.

Motioning for Saito to listen to Touma as he gave a brief statement regarding his involvement, Tatsuo was quick to begin. "As much as I hate being up this early, as promised i'll be proctoring you a Genin exam." Bringing his hand up and extending three fingers into the air he looked to Saito and said "There are three things that I believe a shinobi needs to possess before they're ready to call themselves a Genin. One, a shinobi should have the physical prowess to perform missions, second, they must be smart enough to analyze and create a plan based on the knowledge they have, and finally they must have the will to make decisions with little time to think."

"You'll be tested on all three of these, failure on any will result in failure of the exam." While his face was stern, Tatsuo let a small smile betray his otherwise serious look. "But I believe in you Saito, you can do them. Now c'mon, let's get started, we can't waste any time." Motioning him and Touma to follow Tatsuo lead them through a small clearing in the forest. After a brief walk they finally arrived into an opening, they were met with a cliff face and a waterfall crashing down into a small pool at the base. The sun had just begun to rise, illuminating the clearing and making the waterfall shine like a beautiful crystal. Despite the forest's dark name it definitely had a few beautiful sights to see. This waterfall being one of them.

"You've got two hours to climb up the waterfall, not the cliff, the waterfall. It's going to take chakra control and physical stamina to get to the top." reaching into his pocket and pulling out a stopwatch he looked to Saito and said, "It starts... NOW!" Bringing his finger down to start the timer, the device began to tick down as time ran against the student. Tatsuo was worried a bit, he thought this exam might be a bit too hard for his student. He knew what he was capable of but he wanted to push him, he couldn't let him become a Genin without a proper challenge. He wanted to ensure that Saito was ready when he began the more difficult challenges a shinobi may face.

"It starts... NOW!" And with that, Tatsuo started the device.

He couldn't have been expected to know that he'd need to climb a waterfall, so any anxiety about his capability to accomplish the deed flew out the window. Tatsuo wouldn't give the boy anything too difficult for him to handle; it's just a matter of figuring out how it's done. And if Shinrin-sensei gave me two hours to do it, then it can be done in two hours, he thought, the simple logic sufficing to skate past any initial temptations to doubt himself. The 9-year old turned from Tatsuo and faced the waterfall as though it were a living opponent -- and for all intents and purposes, it may as well have been. He pounds his fist into his palm and smiles widely. "Alright! Let's do this!" the boy cheered, pumping himself up with encouragement and positivity before heading to the pool's edge and... plopping himself down. He sat there unmoving for perhaps 20 good minutes, looking at the situation... the pool, the waterfall, the cliff face... he takes a moment to look in the pool as well, did anything of importance lie beneath the water's surface? Did any caves or other large spaces lurk behind the waterfall? While sitting there analyzing the problem at hand and the environment around him, his posture and poise didn't look that different from Tatsuo's, whose butt grew grass and flowers when doing such work. No such vegetation grew from interaction with Saito's posterior as it did with Tatsuo, but it's clear that that young boy's meditative posture near-perfectly mirrors that of his sensei as he calmly plans his course to conquer the challenge at hand.

As usual when waiting for Saito to finish a challenge, Tatsuo walked off to a tree and took a seat. If Touma did also he would probably engage in small talk with him, if he did not he would just continue on focusing his natural energy. Keeping a close eye on Saito in case he falls and needs to be helped out.

Saito sat at the water's edge for that 20 minutes... and within those 20 minutes, he came up with a plan. It wasn't a perfect plan, he knew... there was no way he could know everything about this particular situation he found himself facing... the Genin Exam. But the child had confidence in himself. If Tatsuo thought he could swim up that waterfall in two hours, then Saito would do it with time to spare.

The boy drew together pieces of the puzzle by looking around. The trees in the forest... the cliff face... the waterfall, whose summit could not be seen from Saito's current perspective. The pool of water beneath said waterfall. Tatsuo said this would take chakra control and physical stamina... very much like the tree-climbing exercise... and the Rasengan, the child thought to himself with a smirk. Everything required physical stamina and chakra control at this point. Fortunately, the boy had piles of both.

He jumped to his feet all of a sudden, ready to go. His first move takes him to a tree, where he proceeds to walk up it. He's a little shaky at first, but in just a few minutes of practice he's cartwheeling and running on the tree's face with mastery over the technique. Jumping to the ground, he then looks at the cliff face. Won't be the same as a tree, but the difference will be useful to help with the next parts... he thinks to himself, before climbing up the cliff face. Again, he's shaky at it, because he's still new to his mastery, but he figures it out in a few minutes and walks up the rock face just as easily as he does with trees.

"NOW..." the boy says aloud to himself, back on the ground. Kneeling, he slams a his palms into the ground with impressive authority for a little tyke. "Doton! Book no Jutsu!" he shouts as he hits the earth underneath him. In response, a circular area before him, previously a grassy expanse, begins to convert into mud. The boy's earth jutsu transforms the patch of land into a muddy mini-swamp, the earthen liquid a thick, soupy consistency.

After making his mud pit, Saito puts a foot on it... and, controlling his chakra, manages to step out with his other foot. And there the boy stood, then walked, then jumped and ran, mastering how to apply the tree-climbing, cliff-climbing jutsu to standing on the surface of the semi-solid mud. It wasn't at all the barely-existent surface tension of water, or the vastly more advanced application of climbing a waterfall, but... it was a step, in the correct direction. The cloudie mastered mud-walking in roughly 10 minutes, and in the next 15 or so he modulated the consistency of the mud pit so that it more closely resembled water... to ease himself into the transition between walking on earth and walking on water. The application of the same lessons as the tree-climbing... but with the variation in the delicate tension of the water's surface as created by waves and other disturbances, I have to vary his chakra output to match, the delicate balance of push and pull between my energy and the surface I'm walking on needing to be so good, as to happen automatically...

From that point on, it was mastering standing on water and then running on it, which was much easier since he'd mastered trees, rock faces, muddy water, and watery mud. Standing there on the surface of the pool, the waves created by the waterfall gliding under his feet, the boy contemplated his next move with just over an hour to complete the task.

If there was one thing Saito was always capable of, it was surprising Tatsuo. While he expected a few trial runs, a failed attempt here and there, he didn't expect the boy to set up his own training regiment just to ready himself for the task at hand. He couldn't help but feel a certain amount of pride at the analytical approach Saito took to everything, even if it had little to do with him. Tatsuo was more of a beat it until it works kind of guy, while Saito took his time and eased into a solution, different processes but Saito's sure had more grace. Letting out a sigh he watched carefully eyeing all of his movements seeing how he prepared for each step. If it was up to Tatsuo an exam would not be needed, but he understood the Kumogakure bureaucracy well enough, they liked their exams and paper work.

Crossing his arms he saw as Saito conquered each step like another enemy before all that was left was one hour and a waterfall ready to face the young Academy Student. Tatsuo brought the stopwatch from his pocket and watched as the numbers racing down, Maybe I gave him too little time, or I made the rules too tough.. he thought before expelling the ideas from his head. He had to have faith, he knew Saito could do it. "C'mon kid, you're going to let a little bit of water beat ya'?" he called out. A bit uncouth perhaps, but not without reason. Saito was a competitive little guy, that little push could go far.

Saito barely heard Tatsuo's words, so absorbed was he in the beauty of the waterfall -- its beauty, and the patterns of water that fell from its top, patterns that fell at random but also consistently. It was like... an avalanche, where presumably a quick ninja could climb "up" the avalanche by jumping up the rocks faster than they fell, but... with water.

And then, more than see the sliding, falling patterns of solid water, Saito could feel how the water fell. His naturally chakra-sensitive, water-receptive abilities came to perceive the falling liquid's ever-changing form, its ever-changing density, its ever-changing surface tension... much like still water, the boy realized, just with a great deal more fluctuations.

"But I can match fluctuations even at those speeds with my chakra, at least for long enough to jump..." the 9-year old suddenly said aloud, after looking up at the waterfall and basically coming to understand it through his chakra after about 20 minutes. He'd taken a seat somewhere in that time and just... reflected, it seemed, until he suddenly spoke -- and stood up, heading to within a few steps of the falls.

His first jump up the falls, with maybe 40 mins left on the clock, got him about an eighth of the way up, his feet rebounding from one clusterpoint of water to the next before he sprung off with a spin and landing nimbly at the base as though he were doing his tree-climbing practice.

Not a bad start... but not good enough... what more? Saito thinks to himself as his efforts, based only on repelling the water from underneath his feet, gets him little further than a fourth of the way. 30 mins to go...

Tatsuo looked to the timer in his hands, he knew Saito was capable of it but he began to grow worried. He really was cutting it close. The attempts were getting better, but at this rate who knew if he would pass. He spent too much time preparing, Tatsuo thought. In a mission like this action was important you rarely had this much time to commit to learning your opponent, but unlike his teacher, Saito was good at taking things slow and using time constraints to his advantage. No matter how worried it made Tatsuo. "Thirty minutes ..." he said to himself as he watched his watch again, if he made it, it would be close.

And then, it dawned on him. He was thinking too closed and restricting himself in too many ways with this challenge. Saito all of a sudden grinned widely, before glancing at Tatsuo and catching his sensei's concerned expression. He tossed the older boy a confident grin.

"Don't worry, Shinrin-sensei! I just figured it out! I got this."

The 9-year old closed his eyes, and concentrated... and after a moment, the child's feet became the gathering place of hid chakra once more. But the difference this time is, chakra also gathers at his hands as well. And it certainly felt different to the young cloudie... but that was also according to plan.

Shinrin-sensei said I had to climb the waterfall... he didn't say I couldn't use my hands!

Saito ran toward the waterfall, and jumped... and when his feet hit the water, he didn't repel like last time, but instead worked with the water so that it accepted him instead, his own chakra in his hands and feet vibrating with an everchanging frequency that... reacted and adapted to the water's push and pull, allowing the boy to give him a "grip" of sorts, allowing him to climb -- though he had to move fast, or the water would slip from his grasp and he'd fall.

Concentration... he boy thought to himself as he took on the waterfall in leaps and grabs, not so much "climbing" as much as something between a jump and a scurry up to the top. It was like... he stuck his hands and feet in, grabbed, and propelled upward.

He started to really tire after about three-fourths of the way up, and his progress started to slow. Then, with a about a fifth of the falls to go, his grip slipped and he fell... not far, as he reached back into the falls to stabilize himself, but he knew he didn't have much time.

Saito did not give up, and as the last few minutes ticked down he let out a child's roar that accompanied a swelling of his own energy. NO WAY I'M LETTING MYSELF FALL BEHIND! the feeling filled him as, putting aside the exhaustion of his body and spirit for one last push, he climbs up and over the top of the edge of the cliff with perhaps a minute to spare. Where he pulled himself over to the riverbank and lifted himself out of the water. He coughed up some water and just panted there for a bit, wondering if he'd actually made it in time.

FAR more difficult than I thought it'd be... the 9-year old thought to himself as he caught his breath. I used a lot of time in the beginning... I won't always have the time to figure things out like that.

The clock was clicking too fast for Tatsuo, he almost wished he could stop time. The task was already too difficult for a Genin-in-training, but Tatsuo believed he could do it. It wasn't until Saito gave his own words of encouragement that Tatsuo grew comfortable with the outcome. There was no way Saito would fail here, not like this, at least. Tatsuo glanced away from the stop-watch as he watched Saito ascend the waterfall. Cringing a bit as he lost his grip and slipped, hoping that wouldn't be the end of this, but Saito showed great endurance and powered on.

Tatsuo couldn't help but smirk, he realized his prodigy's spirit was truly blazing on this day. It's not like Tatsuo was ever not-proud of Saito, the dedication to his training, his resolve, intelligence and willingness to learn were things many people envied in a student. It almost made Tatsuo feel like Saito was wasted on him. A better teacher could do better, but Tatsuo hoped he could teach Saito what others couldn't. A young spirit being doused and corrupted into the life of a shinobi made his stomach torn, especially when he thought of it happening to Saito. Letting out a deep sigh of relief as Saito finally reached the top, Tatsuo quickly scaled up the waterfall. He wanted to cheer Saito on and praise him but the next part of the exam had to start away. Trying his best to keep the grin off his face and putting on his sternest look, he sat down accross the boy. Retrieving a yellowed map with a few rough sketches of what looked like a castle's floor plan were presented to the boy.
f74b19afa4379f38fb937b24b9813f7a.png

"Test number two starts now. This is the scenario." Bringing a finger down onto the map he looked to Saito intently, "It is wartime, you and your platoon have suffered great casualties. Forcing Genin onto the front lines, after an ambush your commanding Jonin is MIA, perhaps even dead. You have taken command of your small group. There is little chance for survival if you continue on, but the information found within the castle could turn the war effort. You've little information other than this, the fort could have ten shinobi, or a thousand, or anything in between. You are at this outcropping of the rock on the southern side of the castle." Tatsuo said as he pointed down to a rocky outcropping in the map. "It is still bright outside, however you and your squad have enough cover until nightfall, if retreat is an option."

Tatsuo's voice grew more concerned, trying to create the intensity required for such a situation. "Commander Saito, what do you do here?" Tatsuo asked leaning back and crossing his arms. "You've five minutes to make a decision, as one of your squad mates is looking to run straight in. A hot headed fellow, but his heart is in the right place. However he as a shinobi, time is something you rarely have and I hope you are tired enough now to not think clearly, as normally, you would never be in battle." he said with a straight face, not even a grin betraying his serious demeanor. "Time starts now."

Saito could hardly believe it that Tatsuo scaled the waterfall so quickly, he'd been at the bottom as the child pulled himself over the edge but appeared right after he collapsed on land at the top. With a map. Talking about the second part of the test.

...a SECOND part?? Blue-green eyes looked up at Tatsuo with some degree of incredulity as the Chuunin explained that Saito was a commander of a group of other Genin during wartime and their Jounin was missing or dead.

The child barely understood what Tatsuo said, so drained and confused was he from the effort to climb the falls. His body hurt and he felt fairly sure he could cough up more water. Tatsuo cut him no slack for exhaustion though, which made sense, no enemy or critical situation would give the child as much time to think as he'd like... but ouch, not being able to take his time on things was a bit of a sticking point.

"Time starts now." Saito wasn't ready yet and was about to say so except that a degree of unpreparedness was a part of the exam. How am I expected to decide to infiltrate a castle like this? And with the lives of other ninja -- other KIDS -- in my hands? There's no way... I can barely breathe right now.

From there, the choice seemed easy. After maybe 30 seconds of thought, Saito just looks up at Tatsuo, weariness and grogginess plain. "If I have to decide now... I'd choose retreat. I can't make such a risky decision that would almost certainly cost lives right now, Shinrin-sensei... to try to infiltrate now would basically be to kill everyone in my platoon. I can't do that. I'd fall back, regroup as quickly as possible, and report the information we'd gathered to a Jounin."

He couldn't do it, while he was supposed to be impartial as an examiner the smile on his face was too strong to hide. "I taught you well kid." he said going to take the map, rolling it up, he placed it into his jacket. "That was actually two tests, you passed both of them." he said with a firm nod. "Making clear and concise decisions with the information at hand is important to a shinobi, you showed both critical thinking and understanding of the situation at hand. However, and more importantly, you showed that the lives of your comrades aren't just tools to benefit from. By showing the maturity to know when to retreat and save you, and your comrades lives, you're proved to me that you're ready to be a Genin."

He stood up and shouted for Touma's attention, whether he was still down in the valley or up with them he wasn't sure. ANBU were sneaky like that.

Whenever Touma would arrive, Tatsuo would nod to him and say, "Thank you for allowing the Genin exam in the first place, after the test I do feel that Saito is more than ready to become a Genin. He managed to pass every test with more than flying colors." Looking to each side, he leaned over to whisper to Touma, "--I hope you have a Cloud Headband.. right?" he said as he pursed his lips and rubbing the back of his neck as he broke out into laughter.

Shuusei Touma - ANBU Captain
NPC

Touma, from the beginning, had simply remained out of sight. He was observing the entire time, so he watched the struggle that Tatsuo had set up for Saito. In addition to watching, he occupied his time working on a wooden carving from a piece of wood he had obtained in the forest. It was a passtime he enjoyed, not surprising given his use of wood Ninjutsu. Asking the student to climb a waterfall was certainly a tall order (no pun intended). Touma couldn't argue against the merit it had as a test. If Saito managed to do it. He took a seat on a branch in the canopy with a good view of the waterfall and watched carefully to see how Saito would rise to the challenge. In all honesty, he expected the student to simply run at the waterfall and attempt to climb it right away. He figured the boy would try this over and over if and until he actually managed to stick to the moving water. That would have been one way to go about it and it might have worked for some, but was it the best way? Probably not.

But Saito surprised Touma as well that day. Unprompted by Tatsuo, the boy used his Ninjutsu to convert a portion of earth into mud. The partial solidity of the mud made it a perfect intermediary step between walking on the solid surface of a tree and surface tension of water. This was a common teaching method for students, but one Saito had not likely encountered yet. Having the thought to train himself in this way before tackling the hurtle of the waterfall climb was actually quite impressive. Touma watched over the next hour as Saito worked with increasing progress, mastering walking on the mud and then walking on the water itself. However, he did use quite a lot of time just learning that. The difference between walking on the surface of water and climbing a waterfall was significant. With only an hour left, Touma wasn't sure if Saito would succeed.

He watched as Saito made his attempts at climbing the waterfall with much more initial success than he would have had if he had simply gone at it without the previous training. His process had definitely paid off. Without first learning to crawl and then walk, he would have had almost no chance to fly, so to speak. There was no way he would have made nearly this much progress otherwise. Still, time was quickly ticking down. The boy was not deterred and with every attempt he made it higher. At last, with little time to spare, with one last desperate attempt, the boy almost slipped. Touma unconsciously stood up as he watched to get a better look. Saving himself just barely, Saito made it to the top. Touma chuckled to himself, unable to help with smirk that formed under his mask. He'd been rooting for the boy without realizing it.

Forming a quick few handseals, the wood underneath Touma's feet warped and pushed upwards with force propelling him off of the branch and towards the waterfall. A tree root pushed out from the water just in time to serve as a springboard for Touma as he landed on it and launched himself the rest of the way up landing several feet away from Saito. Tatsuo had also scaled the waterfall and it seemed the exam wasn't quite over. Wordlessly, the Leaf shinobi pulled out a map and showed it to Saito who was no doubt completely exhausted. Even Touma was surprised that Tatsuo had more in store for the student. Tatsuo began explaining a hypothetical scenario to Saito in which he was unexpectedly placed into a leadership position with terrible odds against his team. He was presented with the option to push forward or retreat. Many young, hot blooded shinobi had the false notion that retreat was never an option. Yet, with barely any time passed, Saito chose the option that would save the lives of his hypothetical comrades.

Satisfied, Tatsuo declared that the boy had passed. Tatsuo called out for Touma, who stepped forward and approached them. He thanked him for allowing the Genin exam to take place and gave his opinion that Saito was ready for graduation from his status as a student. Touma nodded slowly. "I've been watching the entire time and I'm inclined to agree. You showed excellent presence of mind to tackle that challenge in the methodical way that you did and impressive skill to take your plan of action and make it work for you. Additionally, your decision making even in your obviously exhausted state of mind led you to make the right call in the hypothetical situation presented to you," Touma agreed. He paused as Tatsuo leaned over to whisper to him, though Saito could likely hear anyway, before bursting into laughter. Touma chuckled, shaking his head.

"Unfortunately, I don't keep spare headbands on me... so, I do not. However, I did send a message to Kumogakure to have one delivered here in the event that Saito passed. It shouldn't be much more than a couple weeks before it arrives. In the meantime, I did prepare a temporary measure..." Touma replied, reaching into his belt pouch. From it he withdrew an interesting little item. This was the project that he had been working on while observing the exam. A piece of wood had been shaped precisely to the size of the metal part of a normal headband. Upon it, Touma had skillfully carved the Kumogakure symbol in the center. The engraving was spot on- this was a hobby Touma had been practicing for most of his life after all. He had obtained the headband portion from within Konoha- it was the very same used for their own headbands. The wooded portion had been fastened to it with bolts the very same way the usual headband would be. It was, essentially, simply a wooden version of the usual headband.

"I won't force you to wear it, though I did enhance the wood with my Ninjutsu to make it durable. I did want to give you something if you passed, while you waited. Think of it as a symbol if nothing else," Touma said as he showed it to the two of them before handing it to Saito. "So with the authority granted to me, I hereby name you a Genin of Kumogakure. Congratulations, Saito," Touma announced, making the promotion official.

If I stayed conscious through that second test, I've gotta stay conscious through their telling me I passed... Saito thought to himself as Tatsuo and Touma shared their accolades. The 9-year old pushed himself up to his feet and smiled at them both, running a hand through a thick mop of white hair on the backside of his head as he laughed awkwardly. "It just seemed to me that the waterfall-climbing jutsu was really similar to the tree-climbing jutsu? And I had that down... so it was just figuring out the stuff in-between, y'know?"

They then praised him for his presence of mind to not send good ninja to their almost certain deaths, a result about which Saito felt a certain measure of relief. He knew the answer couldn't have been to charge into the castle... and if it was, then the 9-year old wouldn't have been a good leader for the hypothetical group, plain and simple. Loooots of solo missions... he thought to himself with a light internal laugh.

"Touma-san..." Saito murmured as the Cloud ANBU gave him the personally-made wooden Cloud headband. It shone polished in the sun, its engraving perfected, exactly how a headband should look except wonderfully made out of wood. The young boy's eyes finally looked from the unique headband up to Touma, a touch of awe in his eyes for the direct servant of the Raikage. Also a wood style user, as it turns out. Wood style is so freaking cool! the former student's thoughts chime as his eyes dart between the two wood elementalists, his face breaking out into an amazing smile. "Thank you so much, Touma-san! It is my honor to wear this!" Saito puts it on his head immediately -- though who knows if that's where it will continue to be worn -- and feels energy flooding back into him as he stands in the little clearing of the Forest of Death, a brand new Genin of Kumogakure.

After giving Saito a few minutes to be proud of himself, Tatsuo looked to Touma and Saito, "How about Ramen, on me?" Grinning he went to ruffle Saito's hair and awaited Touma and Saito's response. He wondered if Saito was too tired, but being too tired for food was something he'd never heard about before. The sun was just reaching noon, so it was about time for lunch but he wasn't sure if the ANBU was allowed to fraternize while he was here. But it would be impolite to not offer it, especially after the gift he provided to Saito.

Saito seemed pleased by the temporary headband as indicated by the fact that he immediately threw it on. Of course, most students were happy to graduate and proud to wear a headband. It was just a shame that the wooden replica was all that could be provided at that moment. At least they knew that the real thing would arrive soon. Perhaps the replica could be kept as a reminder of the day rather than used in battle like the real deal. With the exam complete, Tatsuo was ready to eat. It was getting to be about lunch time and it would be no surprise if Saito had worked up an appetite. The offer was extended to Touma as well, but he shook his head.

"Thank you, but I'll need to go ahead and sent correspondence to Kumogakure to let them know of Saito's success. Perhaps I can get a rush on the delivery, too," Touma politely declined. In truth, he didn't want to intrude on their celebration, though he did have to send the message along. With that said, it was time for him to part. "Congratulations again, Saito," Touma repeated, giving a nod, "Enjoy your lunch," he added, giving a wave before turning and beginning his walk back to the town proper.
