Each ninja starts from the bottom and start their training as an Academy Student. From there they develop abilities akin to that of demigods as they grow in age and experience.

Along the way they gain new friends (or enemies), take on jobs and complete contracts and missions for their respective villages where their training and skill will be tested to their limits.

The sky is the limit as the blank page you see before you can be filled with countless of adventures with your character in the game.

This is Ninpocho Chronicles.

The rattle of the wheels on the tracks and the gentle swaying of the cars jostled Kiyoshi in his seat. He couldn’t unglue his eyes from the window. He’d never been on a train before. Hell, he’d never been outside of his village. The central valley of Kaminari no Kuni spanned on seemingly forever, with the distant mountains rearing up proudly, creating a jagged-edged bowl effect on the landscape. The train cruised through the valley, stopping at every small town along the way. Kiyoshi was starting to realize how big the world actually was.

Most people got off when they were one town over, but not Kiyoshi, and not the Shinobi who he was traveling with. The CPSS agent sat silently across from Kiyoshi, his face stoic and disinterested in the marvel that was steam locomotion. Kiyoshi peeled his eyes away from the window for the occasional, furtive glance towards the imposing stranger. He was very plain looking, average height, weight, and build. There was absolutely nothing remarkable about him at all. It suddenly dawned on Kiyoshi that that was probably a desirable trait for someone whose whole career was centered around stealth and deception. If it weren’t for the standard issue body armor and Cloud Village headband, your eyes would pass right over him.

Kiyoshi’s ponderings turned his eyes towards the window again. As the miles passed and the sun made its arch in the sky, the mountains in the distance slowly loomed closer. The lush, fertile farmlands of the valley gave way to rolling hills and dense forests as the sun sank below the horizon. With his head pressed against the cool glass of the window, Kiyoshi faded off to sleep.

The train jostling to a stop shook Kiyoshi awake. The sky was grey with the impending dawn, and at some point in the night, the train had made it’s way up into the mountains. The CPSS shinobi motioned that this was their stop; but when Kiyoshi got off the train, the shinobi didn’t join him on the platform.

“I’ve got to head back to the valley. Your village wasn’t the last one on my route, I just wanted to make sure you made it here all right.” Even his voice was completely forgettable. “The train doesn’t go all the way up to the gates. You’ll have to walk the rest of the way. It’s about 10 miles from here to Dragon Tooth Pass.” He paused and smiled, then. “Think of it as your first test.”

The train’s whistle blew, and the crew were waiving people on the platform away from the cars. The shinobi on the train turned and walked back into the car, then stopped, as if he’d forgotten something.

“Oh, yeah, don’t even think about running off. The next nearest hint of civilization is over 50 miles away, and you’d have to go through one of the most dangerous forests in the world to get there. Your only chance to survive is to stick to the road, and head straight for the village. If you hoof it, you should get there by lunch.” And with that, the doors shut and the train was gone.

Kiyoshi was alone, the platform all but deserted. Honestly, he was more than a little insulted that the CPSS agent would think he’d run away. Then again, Kiyoshi could see why he’d be so concerned. Sometimes prospective shinobi weren’t too enthused by their conscription. Some were kidnapped, or even purchased from slavery. It made sense that the agent would be on the lookout for him to run away.

There was nothing for it, and standing around pondering wasn’t going to make the 10 miles any shorter. Kiyoshi shrugged his small backpack onto his shoulders, and began walking down the road. Little did he know, the CPSS agent had slipped a tag bearing a tracking seal into his bag while he slept. Back on the train, the shinobi smirked as he felt the tag head towards the village.

Kiyoshi wouldn’t call his route a road, per say. It was more like a footpath that happened to be wide enough for two carts to pass each other unmolested. It wasn’t paved, but the earth was fairly hard packed from countless years of travel. It was flanked on both sides by tall evergreens, fir and spruce, interspersed with the occasional sheer rock face or plunging ravine on one side or the other, or sometimes both. The path shifted constantly, rolling uphill and down, but always climbing higher. Even though it was early summer, it was still quite cool in the mountains, and could be downright chilly if there was a stiff breeze or one was walking in the shadows of the trees or cliffs.

After cresting a particularly steep rise, Kiyoshi, panting hard, was delighted to see that the terrain leveled off for a bit, and a fast-flowing stream running along the side of the road before it plunged down into another ravine. He was no slouch – Kiyoshi grew up working hard on a farm, after all – but the air was much thinner up here. He estimated that he’d walked about half the distance so far, and had climbed at least a half-mile in altitude. Plopping down beside the stream, Kiyoshi sighed in relief.

He peeled off his tennis shoes and socks, hanging the latter to dry while he rested, and sank his feat into the ice-cold mountain stream. The intense coldness was a shock at first, but after a couple of seconds, he no longer cared. He was promptly distracted by his stomach giving a ravenous growl. He hadn’t had anything to eat since the morning before. He had been too excited to eat on the train, and he hadn’t thought to have breakfast on the platform. Rustling through his bag, he pulled out the sandwiches his mother had packed for him.

His lip quivered and he fought back a tear when he thought of his mom. Boys don’t cry. More importantly, shinobi don’t cry. Kiyoshi knew he was being ridiculous, but it was the principle of the thing. He pulled out one sandwich, and put the other one away for later. It only took four bites to finish off the PB&J, and one or two gulps to polish off what was left in his canteen. With a grunt of determination, Kiyoshi pulled his feet from the stream, dried them off and pulled on his now-dry socks and shoes. It only took another moment to repack his bag, refill his canteen from the stream, and get back on the road. He had been wary to drink straight from the stream without treating the water, but this high up, and running that quickly and cold, the chance of getting sick from it were pretty minimal.

The sun was starting to get high in the sky by the time he got to the gates. The trees thinned out and eventually disappeared, leaving Kiyoshi to wander through narrow passes of unclimbable sheer cliff faces. As he rounded a particularly sharp corner, he was struck by the imposing sight of the gates. It was enormous! Nothing could be that big! Kiyoshi was even a little miffed at the sheer pomposity of building something that big. Tiny specs moved in the towers and on the parapet, guards watching the approach of strangers.

Kiyoshi paused and dug through his bag for the packet of papers that the CPSS shinobi gave him to present to the Gate Guards. A temporary passport and the initial paperwork identifying him as an Academy initiate. Re-shouldering his bag, he approached the massive expanse of… where the hell did they even find that much steel?

”Hello!” He called once he was in the gate’s shadow. ”I’m Takahashi Kiyoshi – uh – a shinobi with the CPSS gave me orders to report here?!” Kiyoshi waved the packet of papers – which he then realized was completely ridiculous. At that distance, he might as well be waiving a pile of take-out menus. Completely at a loss of what to do next, Kiyoshi simply waited for someone to check his paperwork and let him in.

Airi was in an interesting position. She was wearing the outfit that she wore when she met up with Maru. Her hair was loose with some of the strands moving down to the bottom of her collar bone. She had a hair pendant that looked like a collection of Sakura petals, that held up a majority of her medium length hair. Airi was wearing a traditional Kimono, something she was trying to get used to wearing since her father wore them pretty much exclusively. It was a black one with a moon design with sakura petals falling. While black was not her color she did enjoy a healthy amount of pink. So...why was she at the gates dressed this way?

Airi when she turned Chuunin wanted to focus on training students at the academy. The Fourteen year old would hopefully pass, considering how much she was putting into her training. She reached up to brush one of her brown strands that was falling. She had on just a little bit of make-up once again feeling weird if she dressed nice like this and did not put some kind of effort into it. ‘Airi seriously if you want a boy start putting more work into your looks.’ She sighed lightly. ‘Not now Yoko besides it’s not like I am trying to seduce a new academy student.’

Her purpose at the gate was she fit perfectly for the role. Since she was an Anbu in Training she knew how gate procedure was supposed to work, since she was leaving for the academy it meant her getting to see and meet students also made sense. ‘Sounds like too much work if you ask me Airi.’

As she waited by the gate she re-looked at her notes. “Takahashi Kiyoshi...picked up by the CPSS...looks like they are from the country…” a pause and then a soft sigh. ‘Wait isn’t that how you were picked up?’ Airi nodded though it was simply a voice in her head. “Yes Yoko, I still have yet to go out and see my family and it has been almost...three years?” It was starting to get hard to count. Had she really been a shinobi that long. Airi glanced at her nails most recently painted pink since Yoko was trying her best to make her a quote bombshell end quote.

‘You’ll thank me when you find a boy.’ Rolling her eyes yet again Airi walked out towards the gates hearing the soft clopping of her shoes. “Really though how does Maru get around in these traditional shoes...clearly arch support was not on his mind.”

As Airi stood she saw a figure approaching the gates. The teen shifted to look more eloquent and made sure to brush her Kimono. Holding onto a folder Airi started to walk forward, she was focusing quite a bit of her focus on not tripping. Thankfully she got past the clumsy stage of her life...she used to be absolutely awful.

Airi gave a very soft smile and said, “Takahashi-kun.” Airi approached and gave a small tilted bow of her head. “My name is Yamamoto Airi, I will be the one escorting you into the village and getting you acquainted. First however would you care for a bento and something warm to drink?” Airi remembered the trek up to the gate and it was miserable for the those from her small town. The thin air and the exercise required to get up it was excruciating. After some time and training though Kiyoshi-kun would get used to it.

Her soft lavender eyes scanned him over before reaching out to check his documentation. A number of eyes were watching them...As Airi looked through the papers though she smiled happily and continued, “Yes , let's take a short rest before we continue.” Airi was attempting a future career also in diplomacy so she was using this as a means to test her hospitality. Plus food and drink was something she desperately craved when she first got here and she was denied that. Such was the roulette of which shinobi would allow you in.

As she turned and walked she did not say anything until they made it to a nearby bench. “It’s mostly rice and miso but it does have some vegetable and meat as well. Please enjoy yourself.” Airi moved to be seated on the bench moving the bento allowing the boy to sit. She carefully undid the wrappings and opened the thermos to pour some soup into the cup. The warmth would probably also be desired considering it was a bit colder up here.

“Did you have any initial questions for me Takahashi-kun?” Airi would give them her full attention. It was important that she show a serious interest and to make him feel...maybe not special but welcome. After all he was forced to come here, much as she had been. She hated feeling like just a number, another head to roll. At least...give him something before he was put through the ringer.

A small auxiliary door about a dozen paces to Kiyoshi’s left creaked open, drawing his attention from the battlements above. He had expected maybe another bland, forgettable shinobi like the CPSS agent; or perhaps an annoyed and heavily armed guard who would brusquely question him, check his paperwork, then send him on his way. What he hadn’t expected was Yamamoto Airi. Kiyoshi froze, unable to take his eyes off the girl approaching him.

She was stunning. He guessed she was probably only a couple of years older than him, and slightly taller, though that might also be the sandals. The young girl’s face was only lightly made up, but Kiyoshi thought she was pretty enough not to need it; and her lavender eyes stood out even from a distance. Her brown hair fell over her shoulders, reaching her collarbone, and was held together by a sakura pendant. The ebony kimono she was wearing bore an intricate design involving a crescent moon and a tumbling cascade of more cherry blossoms, and Kiyoshi noticed that she wore it quite well.

“Takahashi-kun.” She said, smiling gently and giving a small bow. “My name is Yamamoto Airi, I will be the one escorting you into the village and getting you acquainted. First, however, would you care for a bento and something warm to drink?”

It was at this moment that Kiyoshi realized he was still standing there with his paperwork ridiculously held aloft from his vain attempt to contact the guards on the parapet. He also noticed that he was definitely staring. Shaking himself from his initial shock, he handed her the paperwork and averted his gaze, forcing his body by sheer willpower not to blush. He was suddenly very aware of his humble state of dress, and Airi’s probing gaze. Worn out tennis shoes, old faded blue jeans and a plain black t-shirt, all dirty from the road, made him feel quite shabby in comparison to her intricate formal attire. It also struck him that he hadn’t had a chance to shower since he’d left home the morning prior, and the climb had been an arduous one.

”Oh – uh yes, thank you, Ms. Yamamoto” He said, suddenly remembering her offer. The sandwich by the creek side had been hours ago, and the climb had given him an appetite. Besides, it was extremely rude to turn someone down when they offered you a meal.

“Yes, let's take a short rest before we continue.” She said, turning and leading him through the auxiliary gate into a small courtyard beyond. Kiyoshi caught his eyes wandering, and turned them instead to take in his surroundings. Looking too intently at a girl was bad form, and he would not let his first impression be of a simple farm-boy who ain’t never seen no purdy girl before, boy-I-tell-you-what.

The courtyard seemed to be a small holding/inspection area for new arrivals. It was open air, and carved out of the sheer cliff face, with a couple of benches on either wall. The general feeling overall was austere, which stood in stark contrast with Airi’s outfit.

“It’s mostly rice and miso but it does have some vegetable and meat as well. Please enjoy yourself.” She said, sitting on one of the benches and making some room for him to sit as well. Kiyoshi took off his backpack and sat down on the opposite end of the bench, doing his best to stay upwind, and accepted the cup of miso gratefully.

”Thank you.” He blew across the top of the steaming soup before taking what was supposed to be a sip. It turned out to be a deeper draught than he originally intended. He was thirsty, and the hot miso filled him with warmth. He hadn’t realized how numb he’d gotten from the cold, steady winds that poured down the mountain.

“Did you have any initial questions for me Takahashi-kun?” Airi asked intently. She seemed to be doing everything in her power to make his arrival welcoming, and he greatly appreciated it. The trip had been pretty bleak, and the notion of having had control of his life ripped from his hands, being uprooted from the only town he’d ever known, and his family, had started sinking in on the climb up.

“Not really, Ms. Yamamoto. The CPSS agent explained everything to me in pretty good detail. I think I’m supposed to report to the Academy. Evidently, they have some dorms, or barracks, or someplace for me to stay. He said that they were on summer break, so there wouldn’t be too many people staying there; but there were still intermittent courses for me to take until the class year starts back up.” Kiyoshi ran his right hand through his mess of chocolate colored hair and rubbed the back of his neck with a sigh. ”I guess I could use a map or a local guide to show me around town, if it wouldn’t be too much trouble; but I think I’d really like to settle in.”

He took another drink of the miso. The combination of hot food, physical exertion, and the stresses involved in the uncertainty of his future were taking their toll. What he really wanted was a hot shower and a good night’s sleep. He hadn’t slept in several days, save for the turbulent nap on the train, and his eyelids were starting to feel heavy.

He was…endearing. That was Airi’s first impression at least for the traveling student. ‘Looks like easy side of the road prey to me Airi…’ Yoko was always harsh, of course he looked prey to her. All she saw were looks or strength, ‘or money…Don’t leave that out.’ Airi could only give a small smirk in an attempt to hide her annoyance at the Kitsune. At least the Kumo air was only slightly chilled, it could have been much colder even in the warmer months. Thankfully the Kimono was fully equipped so she felt nothing accept on her hands and face. As someone who was now accustomed to things here…she was just fine.

Despite what the Youth might think about their attire for Airi it only reminded her of her brothers. They all used to go and handle outdoor work, come home muddy. Airi used to hate even skirts let alone what she was wearing now. Her family always used to call her a boy in a girl’s body…she almost wondered what stupid comments they would come up with if they could see her now. Overall she thought he looked fine, though maybe a touch cold. It made sense though if he came up from the plains. She would probably ask him about it, he would at least need hoodie and jackets.

The boy called her Ms. Yamamoto and she felt her face flush a little and she softly giggled into her sleeve. Should she correct him? He was just being polite but maybe this was a little too formal. Then again maybe she was not being formal enough? She took a moment to pause stopping and thinking about how to proceed. Perhaps…we will leave it there for now. Maybe if we train or do a mission or something things can change. ‘Wow…I could have sworn you would have insisted on Senpai or Airi-chan. Maybe you are growing up.’

Airi could see from the way he spoke…unless he was just trying to be polite, that he seemed to be of few words…maybe a bit more stoic. He also did not seem to be one for idle chit-chat. Airi looked around a bit watching a few birds move through the area…a few even had little holders attached to their legs. Messenger birds were about to become obsolete she suspected but some still preferred the old ways. Airi watched them in an effort to prevent herself from just watching the boy eat. She had made the bento and soup herself and she was fairly confident after three years of cooking on her own. ‘Plus Momo would eat it up like he was starving.’ Airi thought confidently.

She smirked again this time avoiding the giggle as he called her Ms. Yamamoto. The CPSS agent had done their job well giving him his first, unofficial mission. They wanted to see how well the student in a new area could gather information. Airi had gotten quite lost and it took her till the end of the day to figure anything out. She had not eaten, was tired from the journey, and then barely made it through getting to her place before crashing. Airi nodded and smiled slightly when he mentioned he wanted to settle in…this place would not be quite that kind if he did things the more traditional way. Those who got picked up by CPSS were at such a natural disadvantage to those from proper shinobi families. All the rocks that had been thrown at her, the fear of failure, the harsh words and the inability to find anyone who would give her private training all came crashing into her worry for this boy. ‘Airi, this is part of the system. If he is strong like you he’ll make it.’ Airi resisted shaking her head. ‘It was a stupid system bent to break those not in shinobi families.’ It was not quite as bad as Airi made it out…but the ones who were on top were usually mean and overconfident, at least three years ago they were.

As Airi picked up the sudden look of tiredness from him she gave a little cough, just enough o draw attention and said, “Well…you actually have a few options.” The sudden squint in the back of her mind with a subtle…’Airi…’ which she quickly ignored. “There are the dorms, which do also provide lunches but do not provide the other two meals. You would also be living in barracks with other students. If you got a part time job or worked a bunch of E-rank missions in your spare time you could afford a place on your own since being a shinobi gives you a discounted rent.” Airi hadn’t found out about it until months later and jumped at the opportunity herself. There was too much harassment for her in the dorms being a weak nobody. The mental stress with everything else simply got to her.

“I personally did two part time jobs on top of my schooling to ensure I could afford food and rent. It cut deeply into my free time for training but living on your own has some advantages as well. If you show some talent you might even get a private teacher or sponsor who will pay for you food and housing so you can just focus on training. That’s the ideal for people like us who got picked up from the CPSS.” Airi had shown little to no promise during most of her career here though others might have disagreed. Either way no one had trained her formally or sponsored her. She really did not want the same thing to happen to Takahashi-kun.

“Classes are actually year round with only a few week long breaks. We are a military after all, time waits for no one, so you probably will only learn basic standard school unless you decided to branch out yourself. Though I always encourage outside reading.” Airi decided to stand up and then moved to bow her head a little forward once again. “If you would like, when you finish up eating, I would be more than will to give you a general rundown of the village. I regret to inform you that I do not have a real map to offer.” Airi lifted her head up again and gave a polite smile and tilt of her head, keep her hands clasped in front of her. “Provided you would be okay with me as a guide? I know some people prefer to act alone.” She did not want to push or force her help onto him but wanted it to be offered anyway.

Airi bowed her head again though and said, “It is up to you the minimum I was required to do was check your papers. I want you to know though that I desire to assist you further, I made sure to leave a part of the day open for this specifically.” Sometimes even if she offered people would still be nice and decline, finding themselves a burden or getting the way of more important things. Saying this is should be very clear that if he rejected her it was solely on how he wanted to do things.

When Kiyoshi called Airi “Ms. Yamamoto”, she blushed and giggled into her sleeve; which, regardless of his efforts, made him blush a little, too. For one thing, it was darn cute; there was no denying it. However, the feeling that brought the blood rushing to his cheeks and ears wasn’t amorous, it was embarrassment. Was he being too formal? Where he came from, you always used your Sirs and Ma’ams. The more traditional suffixes like “Sama”, or “Senpai” were often reserved for special occasions and used primarily amongst the older people in his village. The youth had mostly dropped the use of “kun”, “chan”, and “san”, too. They were only ever used mockingly or, at best, as terms of endearment.

The cultural differences between different parts of the same country were actually quite fascinating. In rural areas, villages only 20 or so miles apart could have completely different dialects and subcultures. It was only natural for there to be something lost in translation. To a simple farm boy who had just been completely uprooted almost overnight, though, the sentiment was completely lost.

She was older than him, and an actual shinobi to boot. She definitely outranked him. She also had at least some administrative power if she was there at the gates to greet newcomers. She was using idioms that were only used on holidays and for certain religious ceremonies, at least where he was from. That’s not even considering how formally she was dressed. All things considered and combined with the uncertainty of his current situation, Kiyoshi thought his formality was the appropriate way to respond to the situation.

Maybe he was overthinking things. He was known to do that quite often. His propensity to overanalyze every situation made making friends difficult in grade school, and his overly serious demeanor didn’t help much either. Kiyoshi took a slow, deep breath, and sighed, letting go of the tension between his shoulder blades. The color faded from his cheeks as he mentally compartmentalized his reaction.

While Airi gave a complete rundown of Kiyoshi’s options, citing the pro’s and con’s of living in the dorms, he continued eating the bento she’d offered. He hadn’t even considered getting his own place. The CPSS agent never said it was an option. Kiyoshi had a little money. In fact, the kind and generous lord of his little farming village had given him a small amount of cash as a parting gift. He could probably afford at least a month’s rent, utilities, and groceries. If he could get a job between now and the end of the month, he could, ostensibly, keep up with rent payments.

If what Airi said was true, Kiyoshi didn’t have as much time to settle in as he thought. When the CPSS agent said “summer break”, he had assumed it was like normal schools, where the students were gone almost two months. If all he had were a couple of weeks, at best, to find an apartment and get settled in, he’d need to get to work fast, quick, and in a hurry.

“If you would like, when you finish up eating, I would be more than willing to give you a general rundown of the village.” Airi said, standing. “I regret to inform you that I do not have a real map to offer.” She smiled and tilted her head in an almost shrugging manner. “Provided you would be okay with me as a guide? I know some people prefer to act alone.” She seemed to be going out of her way not to step on his toes, but part of Kiyoshi was suspicious – rationally or not – about her exceeding politeness. “It is up to you.” She continued, bowing. “The minimum I was required to do was check your papers. I want you to know, though, that I desire to assist you further. I made sure to leave a part of the day open for this, specifically.”

If she was trying to offer Kiyoshi a polite way to decline, she was going about it the wrong way. Her having taken extra time out of her day to help him made Kiyoshi feel obligated to accept, regardless of her intentions. However, that point was quite moot, since Kiyoshi was more than happy to accept the help that he desperately needed. Where he came from, if you needed help and you didn’t ask for it, you were considered a fool; and momma didn’t raise no fool.

“Thank you, Ms. Yamamoto, I could really use your help. I didn’t know about the discounted rent, thing. I actually have a little money. The lord of my village gave it to me to help me get started. So, I could probably afford a small, one room apartment for a month or so. I should be able to get a job by then.”

Kiyoshi stood as well, rolling his shoulders and twisting his neck from right to left with a satisfying staccato of popping vertebra, and shouldering his backpack. It was a series of motions engrained into his very being. Back on the farm, when he was exhausted from hours of backbreaking labor, but more work was yet to be done, he’d roll his shoulders, pop his neck, and get to it. His father used to call him his little work horse, because he would work all day and late into the night, not quitting until the job was completely done, and done well. Kiyoshi had a feeling that that determination – and sometimes outright stubbornness – would come in handy in the weeks ahead.

“I’m ready when you are.” He said with a slight grin, no more than the upturning of the left corner of his mouth, and a determined look in his bright, hazel eyes.

Someone actually accepted her help…? Airi face went from a brief sign of shocked to a small warm smile to then her not controlling herself and it moved to a full blown smile. Her hands still clasped in front of her, she gave another small polite bow. “Lovely!” He continued to mention the lord of his land gave him a bit of money and Airi secretly hoped that at least some of that was over compensation considering the boy’s family was supposed to receive funding from the shinobi village for taking away their kid. Another question for another day, hopefully this boy’s lord was a good one. It was always hard to tell not having left the village herself all that often. ‘Usually only for missions.’

“Yes I agree once you have even a small amount of chakra control and shinobi training most places are eager to grab those for part time work. They basically see it as getting E and D-rank missions for free. So there is a lot of benefit for them to try and higher someone like yourself.” Just being a student in the Academy gave benefits. Those benefits however came with hard work and pressure. Hopefully this boy would overcome what Airi had, but much better.

The young lady watched as the boy got up and started cracking all over the place. She blinked and her smile only faded slightly…’was that amount normal?’ She was wondering if he might have been injured in some way…the roads really were not the safest. He seemed well enough though…’best not to bother him about that.’

After that though he looked at her saying he was ready. As they continued through the courtyard area eventually they would come to what looked like a inner area of the mountain, a series of larger builds seemly coming out of the wall themselves, Cloud had a ton of elevation changes, as such there were understandably a lot of elevators. Airi pointed out first from this higher vantage point, “Do not feel a divine need to immediately parkour everywhere once you get the basics of wall running and climbing. We lose more academy students that way…what with the sudden drop-offs.” Airi chuckled slightly, it was mostly as a joke but if one looked it also would be solid advice. A more serious injury could really cut into a shinobi’s usefulness. Getting behind…well hopefully the boy could imagine the trouble that could cause.

“Usually spring is when we have the largest of our new students for the year.” Airi moved to be closer to the boy and pointed out with hand. “See the large red and black three story pagoda surround by some exercise fields. That is the Aurora Eruditio where all your classes will be formally done. I would suggest going there second. Getting yourself acquainted with the fields, maybe see other students or teachers.” Airi wondered why she would point out the second place to go to first but whatever, what was done was done.

Pointing over to a large black tower somewhat on the other side of the village she continued. “The place first and foremost to go to will be the Torre Celeste. That is the primary office for the Raikage, Sennin, and where missions are distributed. It is basically the paperwork capitol of lightning country. Here we will get you registered as a citizen, get some identification and formally set up your ability to take on E-rank level missions. E-ranks are basically standard chores or errand based missions. Mainly used to see if you are capable of handling tasks given to you.” Airi personally loved those missions the most because people usually treated you will since you were helping them on a small level. C-rank and higher it was all serious and expected…rarely do you ever get a thank you.

Pointing downwards and forward just slightly probably the closest of all locations. “Down there is the Susukino district, basically the business sector. It is stupidly huge and you’ll never discover everything. Restaurants, odds and ends, toys, anything you could want you’ll find there, I would suggest avoid the Sordid Avenue until you turn Genin at least, needless to say it is a bit rough. Further north closer to the Torre you’ll find the Seki district where the noble houses and village clans are. These typically will be prominent Shinobi families.” Reaching back to her face she held out her fingers and started to count, “Otsuki, Shinrya, Tsuyoshi, Saito, Hotaka, Kagetsu, Santaru, Inugami, Chigokai, and Inzuuka.” Airi wavered one on finger for a moment. Deciding to leave some out…to cover up her hesitation she continued, “Sorry to rattle them off you’ll probably forget them but those are the big last names so expect people to treat them as a decently high deal.”

Airi shifted a bit pointing towards the school once more, “Behind the school is the Aesculapium, Bibliotheca Conscientiae, and the Nimbus Delectatio. In order the hospital, Library, and the not so forbidden forest. The last one has a ban for non-shinobi people as there are quite a few monsters and Youkai within the forest. I would advise you to be careful, while it is a popular training ground…it is quite unregulated.” The number of things in there still worry Airi to her core…

“Finally to our right near the Susukino district we have the Vespasian Colosseum. This is a place for mercenaries and shinobi to fight and train together. You can spectate as well as participate. While we have very little deaths in there…it’s not unheard of so please be careful there as well.”

Airi paused for a moment or two just taking in the village. This was the first time she had ever summarized the village she lived in. Brushing a hand through her hair she wondered if she could ever get strong enough to protect it.

“Any questions so far, sorry I sort of just rushed you with information. I didn’t even warn you. The place I would suggest you stay at is in the Susukino district, it is farther away from the school but being close to the stores and everything saves you a lot of time as well.” Airi nervously twisted one of her loose bangs and continued, “While we talk let’s at least start making our way over to the Torre so we can get you registered.” Airi would playfully bound her way over to one of the lifts and wave over to the young boy, her agility while in the shoes maybe causing a bit of interest.

Kiyoshi followed Airi from the courtyard to an overlook that revealed the sprawling village below, listening intently as she described the place he was to now call home. He was a little disturbed at her chuckling at the mention of “losing” students due to wall climbing and running accidents. Kiyoshi wondered if it was common in their profession to have such a cavalier attitude towards the death of children. He stood silently, nodding as she pointed out the Academy, the Raikage’s Tower, the business sector, clan/upper class housing area, the slums, library, hospital, an unforbidden forest, and the colosseum. All of the names sounded strange and foreign, and there was no way he was going to remember the litany of clans she listed off. It was a lot of information to take in, but Kiyoshi was a bright boy. He’d figure it out eventually.

There was a pause where Airi simply looked out over the village with a pensive look on her face. Kiyoshi couldn’t help but notice how forlorn she looked, watching over a village she had been forced to defend. He wondered what drove her, where she got the motivation to be so loyal to a group of people who had essentially stolen her. He had felt an immolation of anger when he was told that he had no choice in the matter, but it petered out rather quickly when he realized that resistance would only result in the death of his parents and disgrace to their lord. A small ember of resentment burned in his chest, and he wondered if he would ever be able to forgive them.

“Any questions so far? Airi said, finally breaking her silent reverie. “Sorry, I sort of just rushed you with information. I didn’t even warn you.”

“No, no questions as of yet. Don’t worry about it. It’s just a lot to process.” He said, shaking his head.

“The place I would suggest you stay at is in the Susukino district. It is farther away from the school, but being close to the stores and everything saves you a lot of time as well.”

He nodded. “All right. It sounds like a good enough place to start, I guess. Hopefully I can get a place that’s not too expensive. I don’t need much; a small studio apartment would do.” Kiyoshi’s simple upbringing meant that he didn’t place too much emphasis on physical possessions.

“While we talk let’s at least start making our way over to the Torre so we can get you registered.” Then, Airi did something that completely blew him away. As if by magic, she leapt across the entire courtyard to an elevator well over thirty feet away. Kiyoshi just stood there, mouth agape, with a look on his face that was a heavy mix of awe, horror, and sheer dumbfoundedness. He’d heard stories of the magic shinobi could do using chakra, like breathing fire or walking on sheer vertical surfaces, but he’d never seen it before. ‘How in the hell…?’

It suddenly dawned on him that he was here to learn how to do that, too. To bend his chakra to his will, and use it to make the supernaturally impossible possible. His visage shifted from awestruck to a huge grin. This might not be so bad after all. He ran over to her from their previous observation point. “You’ve got to show me how to do that,” he said, still smiling from ear to ear.

Airi nodded when he mentioned that it was a lot to process. Airi was actually pretty happy with her knowledge base. It took a lot of studying and traveling around the village to get to where she was. Airi also mentioned the Susukino district for living. He said he would take a look at that which she could only help but smile. ‘At least now he has a leg up on things and can actually focus on learning how to be a shinobi.’ The clan students already had it easy with meals and housing provided. Meanwhile the ones like Airi and Kiyoshi had to struggle while still trying to catch up with those talented people. Maybe Airi was forming a forced kindred relationship with the boy but this was the first time she could really give to those who would be following in her footsteps. ‘As long as it does not get in the way of my goals…I’ll help them.’

The boy seemed to be quite impressed with her leap which just sort of bad her smile happily. “Certainly…the fundamentals are really the hard part but once you get the flow of it, it actually becomes a rather powerful multi-tool.” Airi used chakra for almost everything now, not really able to imagine her life without it. Burden for power though without it should would still be at home with her family. Airi pushed a button and pulled a level and the machine cranked and then slowly brought them down. There wasn’t a whole lot keeping them in the elevator just a simple railing which for first time fallers might be worrisome. Airi who not only had solid chakra usage was not worried in the slightest.

“Chakra at first is going to be very hard to manage. If it centralized anywhere it would feel like it was in your stomach. At first it is hard like a rock but as you work with it, over the years you will get a good sense of stretching it out. Sort of like a muscle or…maybe a new piece of gum.” She wasn’t sure if that analogy would work for Kiyoshi but it was the best she had on her at the time. As the lift descended they would eventually see streets and walkways. Now in the Susukino district proper, the elevator stopped and Airi walked onto the busy street.

Airi turned and motioned, “This is the main street in Suskino, and this will be where all the main shops will be. Sometimes you’ll need to go to them but I like to move a few blocks east or west of this street to find the small stores. They have a smaller town feel when you go to those so they feel more comfortable to me. Plus I like supporting small business over big.” Airi looked down one of the roads seeing her academy self-walking around with Tanuki Rinko. Airi giggled happily before twirling. “When you get really confident I do suggest jumping from roof to roof to avoid traffic.” It was contradictory to what she said earlier but a fall from here would certainly not be deadly unless you landed on something dangerous.

As they moved throught he block Airi began to give just a little about herself. “I am from Kōcha-yō Village located in De Cevitate Attonbitus. At least that’s what they call the lowlands here.” The De Cevitate Attonbitus was basically the small village hub of lightning country. Most CPSS officers went through there first to find the diamonds in the rough. She was unsure if Kiyoshi would know of her village but if he did then maybe this could be a healthy coincidence. “I miss how fertile the land was there…Kumo certainly has a…stubborn seriousness to it.” She gave a small smile to him. She knew this place was cold and not nearly as friendly as where they were from. All things come with change and time though.

Turning Airi placed her finger into her mouth and blew a loud whistle. After a few moments a carriage came up. Airi handed the man some Ryo and said, “Please take Takahashi-san to the Torre Celeste, there he will perform some work and you will stay there until he exits. Then you will take him to the Aurora Eruditio. Then you may depart. Is that understood?” Airi switched while speaking to the driver from sweet young girl to a more commanding voice. Something that really wasn’t commanding and was more like a cute girl demanding something from a parent.

Turning to Kiyoshi Airi smiled she bowed again and said, “Well it would be faster for you this way, hopefully give you time to settle before sunset. Takahashi-kun, please let them know when you get there that Yamamoto-san sent you and that you’re registering for citizenship and that you are an incoming student in the academy. If you ever need anything…” Airi reached out of her small purse hidden in her Kimono and pulled out a piece of paper. “This is my phone number and my address. They may change in the next few weeks but I happen through the school occasionally should that need to be updated. We will need to meet up again so I can show you that trick.”

Bowing once more she would wait till he got in and wave to him as he left. Turning she would make her way home…she already felt a need to get out of this Kimono and into something comfier.

The elevator descended into the village, finally stopping in the Susukino District. The thought of kneading the chakra within him like dough in order to bend it to his will made a little sense to Kiyoshi. He’d only ever heard myths and wives-tales about chakra, what it was, and how it was used. Some said it was something akin to magic, full of incantations and strange hand signs; others, that it was more of a general, all-binding force that flowed through everything and everyone, but that only certain people could harness it. Whatever the explanation, he was sure to be taught the truth at the academy. Kiyoshi did notice that Airi had contradicted herself about the whole parkour fall-to-your-death, thing. But after seeing her leap through the air as if she wasn’t tethered to the earth by gravity like the rest of them, he wouldn’t help but want to give it a try.

Kiyoshi began to feel a certain kinship with Airi when she began to explain where she’d come from. Another village in the valley – or, “Deh Sev-i-tat-ay At-un-bit-us”, or however the hell you say/spell that – just like his. Knowing that there was someone else here who was in the same situation as he was gave him a small amount of comfort. If Airi could make it here, so could he.

“I’m from the valley, too. My village was called Yanagi. It was named after the willows that lined the small river that ran through town.” Kiyoshi’s eyes were distant as he saw past the bustling streets of the Susukino district and saw the dangling willow branches swaying in the breeze, accompanied by the trickling sound of the slow-moving river. He tried to think about what he might miss about the village. His family? Of course. How simple life was? The rich smell of freshly turned loam after the plows folded the field into perfectly straight lines of little mounds of earth? Kiyoshi wasn’t sure he’d been gone long enough to miss anything, really. Not, like, really truly miss it. Only time would show what weariness was etched onto his heart.

Airi’s shrill whistle snapped him out of his pensiveness, and a carriage promptly rolled up alongside. She handed the cabby some money, and gave him instructions to ferry Kiyoshi around to take care of all his paperwork. The change in her demeanor from a sweet girl to what Kiyoshi assumed was supposed to be a commanding voice – although it was really like a small child acting imperious for the sake of it) – threw him off a little. On the one hand, it was interesting to note that there was a serious side to this Airi. On the other, it was absolutely freaking adorable.

“Well it would be faster for you this way, hopefully give you time to settle before sunset. Takahashi-kun, please let them know when you get there that Yamamoto-san sent you and that you’re registering for citizenship and that you are an incoming student in the academy.” Kiyoshi appreciate the sentiment. It was early summer, and the days were long, but he wanted to get a place to stay before nightfall.

“If you ever need anything,” Airi continued, bowing and reaching into a hidden purse in her kimono to retrieve a small slip of paper. “This is my phone number and my address. They may change in the next few weeks, but I happen through the school occasionally should that need to be updated.”

Kiyoshi tool the paper and returned her bow. “Thank you, Ms. Yamamoto, for everything.”

“We will need to meet up again so I can show you that trick.”

Kiyoshi smiled, and as the carriage pulled away, he said “I look forward to it”
