Ninpocho Chronicles

Ninpocho Chronicles is a fantasy-ish setting storyline, set in an alternate universe World of Ninjas, where the Naruto and Boruto series take place. This means that none of the canon characters exists, or existed here.

Each ninja starts from the bottom and start their training as an Academy Student. From there they develop abilities akin to that of demigods as they grow in age and experience.

Along the way they gain new friends (or enemies), take on jobs and complete contracts and missions for their respective villages where their training and skill will be tested to their limits.

The sky is the limit as the blank page you see before you can be filled with countless of adventures with your character in the game.

This is Ninpocho Chronicles.

One night a whistle in the dark could be heard, and then a loud thunk as it hit its mark. Above the bed where Kiriyomi lay resting. An attack? An assassination attempt? By the front of the arrow were attached a small piece of paper. Unfolding it revealed a cipher. Lines and dots, that of a written language the Shinobi of Leaf were taught at the Academy. Once deciphered the text showcased an address and descriptions of function.
On the outskirts of the village by an old abandoned mine lay a tunnel. Inside of the tunnel was a minecart, pulling a handle and pushing a hidden button behind the a painting would initiate the minecart to start moving.

If Kiriyomi went and followed the directions the Minecart ride would go through a deep tunnel, a slow and steady pace, hearing the thumping of metal scraping and the thumping of an old engine, almost like something from ages ago, the speed of travel would hasten a little, and some quick turns inside of the tunnel would lift up one side of the wheels, then the other, a horror-show of a ride, and every few moments he could see in the corner of his eyes opening sin the walls, where eyes might be spotted, staring at him.
Suddenly the breaks initiated and grinding metal tear through his eardums, and as the cart would stop entirely he'd be at a seemingly dead end. The cart would slowly proceed like it was at an angle, just before it would hit the wall though the wall separated in front of him, like the wall had been carefully and perfectly camouflaged like a wall.

As the doors opened, inside revealed a grand room, with walls of grey granite. With tiny slits at the very top, letting in the moonlight making the ambient light within a light blue-ish hue. In the middle of the room a single table stood with 3 masks on top it. Each of a different animal breed. Behind the table are three doors with animal symbols corresponding with each mask.

The cart would roll only a meter or so more and then make a full stop, and as Kiriyomi would step off, out from the corner of the room, where the shadows seemed a little denser, a humanoid shape emerged. The white Avian mask of the ANBU Sennin peered forth towards Kiriyomi, his body emerged wearing his dark clothes. He walked out almost relaxed, like what he was doing was just another Tuesday.
"Greetings. Kiriyomi. In front of you are three options..
The Fox, a cunning, smart animal, usually associated with the ephemereal Kitsune who're known to manipulate people.
The Canine, wolves and hounds, able to sniff out anything and catch things most people miss.
And lastly the Feline, the prowler, hunting prey, able to walk unseen and unnoticed.
Once you have made your choice, put it on, and walk through the door.."

As Kiriyomi would focus on the masks, before he could ask Keiji directly, he'd silently fade away, back into the shadows, almost like a ghost that was never there in the first place. But he was watching. Judging, and assessed his every movement, words and body language. There was an exam to be held, and he was the deciding factor.

Kiriyomi awoke to a faint whistling sound and a thunk, eyes flying open as the arrow embedded itself just above his head. Sending out his senses, he quickly assessed whether he was under attack. Not noticing any chakra signatures nearby that shouldn't be there, he quickly sat up and unfurled the note from the arrow and took it to his desk. After a few minutes, he quickly deciphered the language and stared down at the directions before him. Was this the moment that Corvus had mentioned to him? Was it finally time for him to be introduced to ANBU?

Rushing to get dressed, he quickly threw on all black clothes so that he would be harder to track, and jumped out his window. Heading off in the direction of the abandoned mine on the outskirts of the village, he kept his eyes peeled and his senses out for anyone following him. Attempting to move as stealthily as possible, he stuck to the shadows and alleys of the village rather than jumping across the roofs. That would be too obvious, and if there was one thing he had learned of ANBU so far, they were masters of going undetected until they wanted to be noticed.

Upon arrival at the mine, he looked at the note once more. It mentioned that there was a hidden button to initiate the minecart moving, and so he searched high and low throughout the room to find the button. Checking inside the cart, along the walls, and finally behind a painting. There, before him, was the button. Rushing over to the cart and pulling the lever, he quickly summoned a Kikai clone to push the button then dismissed the clone as the cart started forward into the darkness. Clutching the side of the cart and keeping his head on a swivel, Kiri would notice slits in the walls and would swear that he could see eyes looking back at him. But he was moving too quickly to be certain. Shaking his head, he settled in for the ride, hoping that the cart wasn't going to suddenly tip over and spill him out onto the floor of the mine.

After a while, the brakes began squealing and he grit his teeth against the noise. It appeared that he was going to crash straight into a wall, but he clung onto the cart anyway. He had faith in whoever had summoned him here tonight; he wasn't going to balk just because he might get injured. If that's what it took to join their ranks and protect the village, so be it. Just before crashing into the wall, however, it separated and led him into a room. Inside the room was bare, save for a table sitting before him with three masks on it. Materializing from the shadows was a familiar mask, explaining the choice that he had before him. Glancing down at the table and back up at Corvus, he wasn't surprised to see that the ANBU Sennin was gone, supposedly melted back into the shadows.

Stepping forward, he silently regarded the three masks before him. "Well, it appears that the test has already begun. Selecting the proper mask and facing whatever lies behind the door. The Fox, while tempting, doesn't fit me well. I don't care to manipulate people. That seems very dishonest, and doesn't line up with my beliefs. As for the Canine, that one does seem appropriate. I do like to read between the lines and observe people, looking for things that are out of the ordinary. But does this truly fit what I am going for? The Feline. This is my choice. Hunting those who would harm the village, working in the shadows, unseen and unnoticed. I'm not joining this branch to seek glory, but rather to do my best to keep everyone safe from the threats that they are unaware of. Easiest to do this when I can go unseen."

Picking up the feline mask and placing it on his head, Kiri takes a deep breath and approaches the corresponding door. This was it, the moment of truth. Pushing the door open, he steps into the darkness beyond, ready to face whatever lie in wait.

Approaching the door wearing his mask a piece of paper materialised. Reading the note Kiriyomi would sense a slight pulse from the paper, like it absorbed some of his chakra then emanated some energy back to him, affecting his mind, at first the paper looked empty. But then text seemed to appear, the text read "60 seconds to decide: Eliminate"

As Kiriyomi would open the doors, a simple room of bare and solid concrete, not larger than an average living room, a large soft rug covered most of the floor, a painting hung from a nail on the wall of a spring field of barley. Candles on a small table by the bed up against a corner gave the room a cozy feel to it. At the top of the far end wall were wide and short window slits giving the top of the room a blue-ish dark hue from the moonlight shining through. Below the windows on the floor stood a desk with a lamp illuminating the top of it. Sat by the desk with their back to Kiriyomi sat what appeared to be a girl, her long bright blonde curly hair, tight shoulders and small stature made her seem young, maybe early 20s. Her scribbling echoed on the bare walls, she seemed preoccupied with whatever she was writing, and didn't react to the doors opening behind her.

The contents of the room, and her youth made her seem out like a target of high stature, a rich business man's daughter, a princess, or the daughter of a political rival. Her reasons for being there, her identity, and innocence were irrelevant to the mission given though.

Kiriyomi had a single task.

Kiriyomi walks to the door, watching as a paper materializes before him. Reading it, he sets his jaw and stares blankly ahead. It would appear that his mission here was to eliminate his target. He was given no further information, other than a time frame. He had 60 seconds to decide, which wasn't much time at all. Pushing the door open, his gaze sweeps across the room. It was a room of a simple design, with little decorating it aside from a painting and a small desk at which sat a woman facing away from him. The sound of scribbling echoed around the room, disguising the sound of the door opening.

Smiling to himself and stepping to the side of the door, remaining in the shadows, Kiri silently commanded his Kikai into action. They swarmed forward towards the girl, swiftly creating a dome around her to muffle any screams that she may let out. A cold glint in Kiri's eyes as he clenched his fist, and the dome began shrinking down on the woman and the ants began shredding her flesh and ripping her into pieces. As the dome continues to shrink smaller and smaller, he walks over to the desk and looks over the papers to see what she was writing. His mission may have been to eliminate the target, but it wouldn't hurt to gather any additional information that could benefit him and the village as well. For all he knew, she could have been a spy that was caught in Leaf and was trying to share secrets with potential enemies.

As the Kikai slowly crawled back up his legs and into his body, he glanced behind him to see that there was nothing left of the woman but a few scraps of clothes. A single tear slipped from his eye, as he thought back to the first time that he had used this technique, back when he found out that his father had been betrayed and murdered inside the village gates. He wouldn't allow anything like that to happen again, no matter what. Whatever job crossed his path, he would execute it with cold precision if it meant that he could protect the village and everyone who called it home.

The second the lady saw the first insect appear in her vision she didn't seem too bothered, perhaps she was just used to them in her daily life. But as more and more gathered and started to touch her, covering her mouth her breathing seemed to intensify. Once the biting, and the eating began it was already too late and her muffled screams served her nothing.

The paper she had been scribbling on that Kiriyomi was writing read "Congratulations on getting this far, your trials of death begin now" As soon as he would read this and turned to look at the pale boned corpse his insects had left sitting turned at the blink of his eyes into a white training dummy, with most of it's body bitten and chewed, the wood that filled its body were turned to sawdust and as Kiriyomi blinked again the room turned blank, the candlelight, the rug, the painting, the desk behind him, everything vanished like it had never been there.

At the doorframe leading into the room a familiar shape as that of Corvus stood, black as the void itself, his shape seemed to actively repel light as he stood there, only thing that made it clear who it was standing there were his white beaked mask. The sound of slow clapping came from his arm movements but seeing the hands meet would be difficult to discern due to the shadow garbs he wore.

"Congratulations on following orders. You'll do fine here among us." He widened his arms in a welcoming gesture, and as he did, the darkness that seemed to have his form swallowed turned to a brighter black almost grey like it was a form of Chakra cloak he had dismissed. "Welcome aboard!"
Lowering his arms he continued "The mask you're wearing is yours. You wear it all times while here, out on missions, and whenever business relating to the ANBU is present around you." He turned, indicating Kiriyomi to follow him. "From this point on the only person you answer to is your squad leader, captain, your sennin, and the Kage himself in that order of priority." He walked through a hidden door from the prior room where Kiriyomi picked up his mask and lead the way through another corridor.

Several ANBU had emerged into the room and had begun packing away the table and removed the other notes on the doors.

Ending up in another room where a lady sat with her eyes looking through a bare blank white rounded surface mask, her eyes were on an old typewritter, her tapping seemed distant first but as they got closer the typing became louder and louder. She finished a document by as they approached her, pulling of the paper she sat it besides her, and then looked up to Corvus. "Ah, Corvus senpai, I see your new recruit got through with flying colours!" Her voice was mellow sweet, almost motherly in her care and warm tone. Her lithe body wouldn't seem motherly, but her care seemed at least genuine. Corvus nodded briefly and then turned to Kiriyomi. "This is Mission Mother. Beyond myself, and the Kage, she is the one that assigns you and everyone else missions. If you work for her as efficiently as you did just now, you'll be fine.."

He walked away again, leading the way into another corridor, here the walls were of bare cement like other places but they seemed cleaner, less dusty and more in use than the rest of the facility. There were a lot of doors on each side of the walls, each with a little plaque that seemed to emenate chakra. "All of these doors has a chakra signature attached to it. Our offices, of both captains and my own shift randomly, and only sign you'll have to go by is my chakra signature mixed with a door. This way only those familiar with both the interior, my chakra, and that of the doors would be able to find it out. It takes some getting used to, but you should get it in no time."

He walked further into narrow passages and walked past plenty other doors, in one corridor stood a small person, a child, not looking older than nine. Her mask was that of a Kitsune annd she looked to be standing guard. As Corvus approached his hand briefly touched the plaque by the door and opened the door. Leading the way to a small office. A steaming hot cup of coffee sat on the desk and a stack of paper looked to await his attention on the other side of the table. He sat and indicated for Kiriyomi to sit as well.

"There are many ways to access our headquarters, the mine cart is just one. You'll quickly be introduced to a few others, please feel free to use the ones others point to and not try to find alternative ones on your own. There are many trapped access points. So be aware of that and stay updated." He nodded like a finality to the whole tour.

"As you are not only of Reaper's suggestion, you also have the Kage's recommendation, I am promoting you directly from Genin to full-fledged ANBU. Make me proud and don't make me regret it. Protect and serve the villlage. That's your main goal from this day forward."

"Dismissed!" He grabbed the top piece of paper and began reading it as the door leading out opened. The little girl stood holding the door for Kiriyomi.

Kiriyomi blinks and stares down at the paper, taking a moment to fully understand what it said. Turning back towards the corpse, he was surprised to see that rather than the body that had been lying there before, it had instead turned into a training dummy. Apparently his test was to see whether he had the gall and nerve to assassinate the target or not. Looking up at the sound of clapping, he would see Corvus enter the room again, congratulating him on passing the test and welcoming him into the folds of ANBU. A brief explanation was given, mostly the hierarchy of who he was to report to and that he should always wear his mask when he was out taking care of ANBU tasks. He had inferred as much, from what he had seen of the branch members before. He had no idea, until the fight in the woods, that Shusuke and Keiyaku were both members of ANBU. Clearly this was supposed to be kept a secret, one that he would guard with his life.

Following Corvus through the door and out into another room, he was introduced to someone that Corvus called Mission Mother. Kiri simply gave her a nod, speechless at how quickly things were moving. His mind was a whirlwind of thoughts and questions, but he thought it would be best to just take in everything right now and ask questions later once he had finally settled into the role and fully understood what exactly was being asked of him. For now, he would just observe and file away any information that was thrust upon him. He quickly learned that the offices shifted randomly, which made sense, as that would make it difficult for any intruders to find Corvus or any of the captains. Thankfully he had some sensor abilities himself, so following a chakra signature to find the correct door in the future wouldn't prove to be an issue for him.

Corvus led Kiri to a door, which opened at his touch, and inside was a small office. Corvus entered, and gestured for the boy to sit in one of the chairs before the office. He was given a warning not to seek out any additional entrances to the ANBU headquarters, as many of them were trapped. Rather, he was to use the mine shaft or any other entrances that were shown to him by other members of the branch. Nodding along, the boy filed this information away and made a note to ask Keiyaku about a simpler entrance to their headquarters. While the mine shaft was fun and all, he figured that there had to be a more direct and faster route there. If he was to be expected to report in for missions and reports, he would want to find a faster way to enter.

The boy's jaw dropped behind his mask, as he was informed that he was being promoted from Genin to a full fledged member of ANBU. He didn't dare protest, however, since both Shusuke and the Hokage had recommended him. Instead, he would prove himself worthy to Corvus and the other members of his new branch, in any and every way possible. Kiri was determined not to fail, especially when he was told that his mission was to protect and serve the village form that day forward. This had been his intention ever since setting foot inside of the Academy, and finally that dream was being fulfilled. As he was dismissed, he stood and bowed to his new branch leader. A sense of pride filled his chest; if his father was looking down on him now, would he be happy with the path that his son was taking? Would he be able to rest easy, knowing that Kiri was protecting the village and everyone in it from the shadows? Only time would tell.

[I accept the rank of ANBU]
