Standing in the familiar sitting room in her family's house, Hikaru read intently from the first of a stack of basic combat manuals as her father sat nearby and watched. He had unearthed the manuals from a dusty closet somewhere, and he explained to her that her mother had used them to try to teach him the basics of shinobi battle, "obviously to little avail!" As he watched his daughter frown down at the first few pages, confusedly moving her arms to try and replicate a diagram, however, he stood and peered at the page that was giving her trouble. He slowly moved his body into the form of a basic defensive stance while Hikaru watched, wide-eyed. "Ready to practice?" he asked, as she returned his grin.

Hikaru and her father worked through the manuals slowly but surely, practicing every technique that she could understand and he could remember. They tried simple Bukijutsu maneuvers with short wooden sticks and eventually blunt kitchen utensils, watched films on the family's small TV about recognizing clones, and talked about the best ways to confuse theoretical opponents. In between, they took snack breaks, and Kaito told his daughter of his childhood dreams of becoming a shinobi, or else read to her from his own personal 'Ninja Notes.' At the end of the day, Hikaru had tired her father out completely, and he retired for the night, reminding her not to stay up too late.

In the process of putting all of the manuals, sticks, and tapes away, Hikaru came across a specific booklet that caught her eye: while the combat manuals they had used earlier were light orange in color, this one was a turquoise-green shade. On the cover, a name was written: Amari Mitsuo, her mother's maiden name. She opened it eagerly, desperate for a deeper gaze into her mother's life. The small book was full of writing and penciled diagrams of what looked like the chakra network with colorful designs lining the margins. The first thing Hikaru's eyes settled on was a short passage titled 'Conservative Motion: Intelligence and Grace in Battle' written in light ink. She was enthralled with this compendium of her mother's design, and she sat awake poring over that passage over and over again until she knew it by heart.
