Ninpocho Chronicles

Ninpocho Chronicles is a fantasy-ish setting storyline, set in an alternate universe World of Ninjas, where the Naruto and Boruto series take place. This means that none of the canon characters exists, or existed here.

Each ninja starts from the bottom and start their training as an Academy Student. From there they develop abilities akin to that of demigods as they grow in age and experience.

Along the way they gain new friends (or enemies), take on jobs and complete contracts and missions for their respective villages where their training and skill will be tested to their limits.

The sky is the limit as the blank page you see before you can be filled with countless of adventures with your character in the game.

This is Ninpocho Chronicles.

The sound of a pen scratching paper filled the near-empty and otherwise silent classroom. Four rows of desks were aligned neatly, their chairs turned over and resting on top. A large desk stood in front of them. Sheets of parchment were moved from a pile on one end to the other side as they were carefully examined and marked. The blackboard, usually displaying all kinds of information, had been wiped clean. Light fluttered in through the open curtains, casting shadows of the trees outside onto the cabinets along the wall. It suited Natsu just fine like this. Such calm and peace was hard to come by in a village of hormonal teenage Shinobi. The older man prided himself on having just such a place to himself. The library had been one of the few other places he could relax but if rumors were true, the Main Branch Sennin and her masked lover canoodling in the Bibliotheca Conscientiae. And that lowered its appeal considerably.

Striking through an answer on the test sheet in front of him and jotting down the grade, five out of seven, at the top – Natsu sighed contently. None of his students had failed their latest written test. It gave him a sense of personal pride. His teaching hadn’t been in vain after all. Not that he’d doubted that per say. His classes usually had plenty of interaction between him and the students. It was nice to see it confirmed in metrics however. Combining all the test papers in a neat pile the Jonin placed them in a cabinet and locked it. Casting a glance at his watched, he hummed. Just in time! Good! Natsu thought. That left him with enough time to grab some snacks before his next appointment. Picking up the cane resting against his desk, the blonde made his way outside into the Village.

“Oh, and then one more with chocolate topping please!” The blonde instructed, his voice revealing how excited he was about the pastries even after all these years. Exchanging a handful of Yen for the bag of donuts, the Shinobi went back on his way. His doctor had warned him once to lay off of the snacks. Natsu had enquired if it had an impact on the cancer eating away at his body. As the man had denied but started about some other disease called deeyabeetus or somesuch, the former Spymaster had tuned out. They’d take his namesake snacks from him over his dead body! That was neither here nor there however. Entering his classroom once more and seating himself at the desk, Natsu rubbed a painful knee before fishing out one of the three remaining donuts. Nibbling at it, years of training preventing him from spilling crumbs on his desk, he awaited the arrival of one young and recently promoted Suika.

Tying her village's headband around her neck and equipping herself the rest of her kunoichi gear, Suika was ready for the day ahead. Contrary to popular belief (or hope) at the Academy, your days there were not limited to pre-graduation studies. Many shinobi, even Chuunin, still attended from time-to-time to brush up on techniques, attend seminars or tutors, and exercise their environmental training. The young gypsy wasn't necessarily thrilled to return to that place today, but she was appointed today's specialized course by one of her higher-ups. She wasn't sure if it was designated through recommendation or just the random pick of the lot, but it didn't matter really. She was adapted to the shinobi lifestyle and learned that most questions were better left unasked.

Suika walked down the hallways of the Academy and greeted old instructors and peers as they passed. A smile here, a wave there, it was just her giving face. She wasn't one for surface-level socialization, but she knew playing the part was key at times. The insincerity she costumed with others wasn't her favorite part about herself. She would work on it, she thought, but now wasn't that time. She had more pressing matters to deal with. The girl quietly walked into the classroom with a soft presence. Upon entering, her colored-eyes caught glimpse of a familiar old face. She smiled and approached the elder before her.

“Greetings, Natsu-sensei.”
she addressed respectfully with a subtle head bow. Suika then made her way to the desk closest to the man and took her seat. She fixated her attention on the geezer as she drew out pencils and parchment. She was ready; her demeanor exuded a commitment to learn. Contrary to her previous behavior, this was not part of gypsy girl's typical facade. She wasn't fond of the academy, but she found treasure in knowledge and the growth it stirred. This was reinforced by Natsu's presence as her instructor. She had prior classes with him that proved useful to her. Aside from that, the aged blond had quite the reputation in Kumogakure and was usually revered as a veteran with an impressive resume. She recognized she was able to learn an abundance from him.

She gave him a calm, readied nod.

"Ah, good afternoon Suika-san." Natsu replied in kind to her greeting. The new headband worn proudly around her neck caught his attention. Suika had been a fine student from what he knew. During his classes she had shown sparks of potential and a quick wit to boot. His colleagues at the Academy had voiced similar compliments. Not only her classroom work ethic had been noted - her tutelage under Shieo-sensei had been a topic for debate in the teachers' lounge as well. For all the man's apparent dislike of tutoring, he was surprisingly well suited for it and thus often chosen to help along a student. It had inspired Natsu to pick up some of the slack and do his share of tutoring. Suika had been invited not due to any learning deficit - her achieving the rank of Genin was proof enough that she had mastered the Academy basics - but because Shieo had voiced some concerns in his exam evaluation. Furthermore, Natsu was curious about how the girl saw her future in the Village. Would she aim for the ANBU or Medical Branch? Or would she perhaps be swayed to remain in the Main Branch and consider the KSIS? Natsu had to admit he could see her do well there, though given his history he was a bit biased. The girl had already set up her material by the time he recovered from his ponderings however and seemed eager to begin.

"Let me start by offering congratulations on your promotion. Well done indeed!" A bright smiled flashed her way. Reaching for the bag on his desk, he offered her one of the two remaining donuts. "As a token of celebration." He explained and with a conspiring wink he took the final one. The girl didn't need to know it wasn't exactly the first of the day. "I'm certain people will have lectured you already on how you're now truly beginning your career as Shinobi and how the honor and safety of the Village rests upon your shoulders now too. However - you will also be making a choice soon. Join the masked ones of ANBU? Take up a role in the Aesculapium? Or will you continue your career in the bes-.. Main Branch?" Natsu quizzed. He continued before she'd be able to answer. "I have to remain impartial of course - however, the branch and division leaders also keep their eyes on the students graduating every year. It is in the interest of one of those that I'd like to instruct you in one of the finer weapons of Kumogakure - Politics."

The Jonin carefully studied Suika's response to his statement before elaborating. "Politics is a broad field however. Far too broad to cover in the few hours we have available to us today. I will shortly explain it's general importance; showcase several scenarios and anecdotal examples; and explain how political play is generally employed by Kumogakure. Afterwards, we can go into more detail on several related topics. Diplomacy, the current political landscape within the Lightning Country, foreign relationships, .. I'll let you pick once we get to that point. Take notes if you feel they'll help you digest the material better and don't hesitate to ask questions as we go along. Do you already have any before we get started?" With that first explanation out of the way, Natsu would await any questions the young Genin had.

Class began with the aged shinobi offering congratulations to her recent promotion. What followed brought a distinct sparkle to the girl's eye. “Thank you, Natsu-sensei.” Suika reached for the donut as she grew a more genuine smile. “It was definitely worth it, if not just for this.” she playfully added. It wasn't typical to find someone who appeased her sweet tooth, but her sensei definitely hit the nail on the head. She emitted an aura of gratitude as she chomped down on the sugared pastry. Natsu continued his spiel. “Medical... ANBU...” the kunoichi contemplated for a few seconds between his words. In honesty, she hadn't taken the time to study the various sub-branches in Kumogakure. She was aware of their general gist, but she was so wrapped in her promotion and the mixed feelings it invoked that she never gave it proper thought. Suika penciled it into her to-do list.

It wasn't long until her instructor mentioned a concept that perked her ears and painted her expression with curiosity. Politics. Although Suika was still considered foreign to Kumogakure, its political climate was a strong enough presence that she already formed some preconceptions. Despite this, she was no fool. Shinobi were monstrous beings with like capabilities, but they, like most beasts, were leashed by a greater mind. The master's hand was so powerful that it bred a deep-rooted idealism held true to most of the village's ninja. She flashbacked to Shieo and her recent examination. “A shinobi's duty is to kill.” That simple notion has haunted the girl since that day. It attempted to temper her evolving convictions and adopt in her a new set of lens. Suika refused. In that rejection, she aimed her energy toward the entity that produced such a mindset – Kumogakure's central government. With that newfound focus, she was also in recognition that she knew absolutely nothing about it. This is what sparked her noticeable interest in Natsu's lecture.

“No questions yet, sir.” she replied as she grasped her pencil firmly and nodded. “I'm sure I will have a few when the times comes. Feel free to proceed as you like.” Her visibly earnest spirit gave clear cue that she was ready to receive the former Spymaster's polished wisdom. It was time to find out what made this village tick.

“Politics is a tricky concept to define. Most broadly put, I would explain it as the manner in which conflict of interest among people is resolved. Taking a look at the academic interpretation of politics, there are two prominent views on how to approach politics.” Natsu commenced and raised two fingers. Tapping one, he continued. “The first group will frame politics as the question of ‘Who get what and when’. I believe this is the most common rationale currently in the academies of Raiden no Me." The older man lowered the tapped finger and moved to the other. "The second group is a more recent group which follow the question “Kto kovo?”. It originated in the Bear Country and would literally be translated as “Who, whom?”. The broader interpretation of this question is “Who overtakes whom” or “Who inflicts what onto whom?”. There are other beliefs still – but these two are most generally known and agreed upon."

"While the latter sounds more aggressive, it can be inferred from either that in the end – politics involves at minimum a capability of power to resolve a conflict. When resolving such a conflict there is a shift in power from one person or group to another. And it is precisely that dynamic which explains the importance of politics. That is the reason why even we Shinobi, powerful as we are compared to the common man, engage in it. For in the end, everyone is part of it. From the farmer who has to adhere to rules and regulations on his stock and land to the noblemen and -women at court who came up with such rules in the first place. The 8th Raikage Hayata Shin, Raiden bless his soul, understood this well. The Hayata-Yamauchi Treaty is the most prominent example of this.”

Natsu fell silent at this part. It’d give Suika some time to digest the load of the information and allowed him to think back to that time. He’d been in his prime still then. Masao had been alive as well as Haruka. It was not good to dwell on those memories but lessons should be drawn from it. The past was the past and before him was sitting a part of the future. His focus would be on guiding that precious resource. “Tell me, what do you know of the Treaty? Or of the Kingslayers who almost succeeded in preventing the treaty from ever happening?”

“Everyone is a part of it...” she reflected as the man grew mute for some generous seconds. Her thoughts traveled into ten different directions as she attempted to wrap her head around the concepts shared by the wise, old shinobi. “So there's two main groups,” she mused. “with two very different philosophical ideas and corresponding approaches. The main idealism that flows in Kumogakure centers around resource and begs the question 'who' and 'when'. I definitely can see that, but how does that transfer to mindless killing? That doesn't seem very resourceful.” As her mind formed ideas and potential questions, she jotted them down into annotations on her expanding notes. “Also, there's another way of thinking, 'Kto kovo?'. That viewpoint centers around on who overtakes whom. That sounds about right.” Unbeknownst to her, her face scrunched subtly on the thought of the latter system of belief. That fit more parallel to what she has witnessed since her stay in Kumogakure.

Suika was now loyal to Kumogakure, but it was more out of necessity than willing pride. In her view, Kumogakure was no more than a military state which supplied itself with every resource possible. It was to the extent that it actually harvested children from all parts of Lightning Country with their CPSS. That's how Suika was found. Her latent talent was recognized by recruiters and, at the age of ten, was recruited to become a chakra-fueled killer. The power and knowledge she gained was crucial for a survivalist such as herself, but the integral concept of it all disturbed her. This was her current conflict, and it was one that was mercilessly plucked from her previous instructor and examiner. “It is best to know now, I suppose, than to be blindsided later.” she reasoned. She still longed to slice through than man, though. Well, sorta.

Natsu-sensei continued.

He questioned her knowledge on the Treaty and the past events of the Kingslayer. It was information shared throughout the public, but one that wasn't thoughtfully elaborated to her. Besides that, her affinity for history was never her selling point. Suika's interest, again, was perked. She knew that her sensei would relate this knowledge to some type of useful wisdom.

“Regretfully enough, I do not know too much on those events than surface details.” she grinned and nodded. “I would love to hear you explain it, Natsu-sensei.” She then readied herself to write down more notes. Her intent to learn more was clear.

"Very well." Natsu remarked, shuffling on his seat and leaning back somewhat. "The Hayata-Yamauchi Treaty is an international agreement between the countries of Lightning, Bear and Marsh signed in the Year 42 - about 12 years ago now. In many ways, it resembles the Kagetsu Treaty of the Year 27. The main difference is Kumogakure being a far more prominent player in the conflict in the Hayata-Yamauichi Treaty. In fact, tracing the official documents leading up to the planned signing event designate Kumogakure as entity seperate from the Lightning Country. This was rather unprecedented as Kumogakure does not have full political autonomy of it's own per say. We make use of the land provided to us Lightning Country's Shogun and are as such considered a subject to the bakufu. This holds true even now - though we enjoy much more freedom in our dealings now than before the treaty. I am even confident in saying it was the successful signing of that very agreement which enables this limited independence. Well - that and the relations between Kumogakure and the Shogun at that time."

"We've always held an important military relevance for the Lightning Country. The Shogun's own army is a force to be reckoned but Kumogakure adds the necessary punch to set the Country apart. You see, Bear Country have their own Shinobi Village - Hoshigakure - but it serves as almost their full military might. Marsh does not, at least in any official capacity, employ or even condone any Chakra users in their ranks. However, their advances in military tech are nothing to scoff at. Their infamous Unit-124 especially would be a match for any Kumogakure Jonin. Regardless - it is this perceived level of military prowess that set Lightning apart and allowed us to remain neutral in the first Bear and Marsh war in any official capacity. To return to the Treaty however, there are many events which could be marked as the start of it all. I believe it was Chancellor Tachibana Ami who hoped to strengthen the bonds between Lightning and Bear.

You can see how this would've spelled trouble for Marsh. If it had been just Lightning and Bear joining forces they could've completely shut down a large part of Marsh's international trade. Given enough time, it is not unthinkable that they would've made a push to seize control of Marsh. However - before Marsh was pushed into reacting, a small rebel group entered onto the scene. The Kingslayers as they were called. It was led by Yukimura Enishi. The man who assassinated first and seventh Raikage Kagetsu Kiyo as well as my f-.. as well as Sennin Takaki Masao."
Natsu explained. His slip up had been corrected swiftly enough but he found himself surprised at the mistake. After all these years, digging up the old memories still had their effect apparently. "The Shogun and Chancellor were to meet with King Haninozuka Nikolai IV. A Kumogakure delegation was sent to ensure there would be no issues. However, the Kingslayers were successful in intercepting the delegation and succeeded in killing the foreign King before we could chase them off."

"Sennin Takaki Masao and Medical Chief Shinrya Kitsune were arrested for their involvement in the affair. Truthfully, they were not guilty at all. However, the Kingslayer Enishi had placed one of Kumogakure's ANBU under an illusion and it was this ANBU who had struck the killing blow. Bear retaliated. Of course - they had just lost their King after all. Not only that, there is a matter of protecting one's image as a Country. If they had the assissination go without demanding retribution it would've harmed their reputation both internally and externally. Our Shinobi's sacrifice meant that the demands were met and, not unimportantly, shifted the blame from the Shogunate to Kumogakure. It was their actions which made further talks even possible. Further complications however saw the eventual release of Takaki-Sama and Shinrya-Sensei. This all led to the Tenouzan pontiff Yamauichi Kiyoshi calling together Kumogakure, Bear, Marsh and Lightning in Tenouza as neutral ground for signing the treaty. The Kingslayers here attempted to assassinate all of the three countries most prominent political leaders and cause instability throughout the regions. We stopped them."

"Obviously, this is not the full story."
You'd need several pages of neatly written text to get a bigger picture after all. "But it does highlight some of the more prominent political events. Behind the scenes, helping to orchestrate this entire ordeal and smoothen out the many hurdles along the way, was Kumogakure's Diplomacy division. They executed and coordinated missions ranging from silencing influential opponents to the treaty to spreading information to commoners in all of the countries on what the treaty would entail and how it affect them. Propaganda in some cases, the truth in others. They did so under my orders - which were passed unto me by Sennin Takaki Masao and Raikage Hayata Shin. Even those who did not bloody their weapons in the Raikage's name knew the consequences of their actions could lead to violent uprisings and riots. Make no mistake. Orders are orders. And the Orders of our Kage are absolute - horrid as they may sometimes seem."

"It is imperative that this chain of command, forged by steel loyalty, are not broken. You will be expected to operate in independant capacity on certain missions. You will find yourself having to make decisions that determine the outcome of your mission but could create ripples for years to come. And throughout all that - the safety and continued welfare of Kumogakure should be your primary concern. I cannot state for certain how Shieo-Sensei expected you to handle his exam. I would not have faulted your response. We have too few teachers as it stands, so killing Shieo-Sensei would have harmed Kumogakure more than the promotion of a single Genin. That is not to discredit your future potential, Suika-san. But it is such cold rationale which has seen me through my years of being Kumogakure's Spymaster."
And Sennin for a few brief weeks - so short is was not even worth a footnote in Kumogakure's history.

"The main point I wanted to make here is such: A Shinobi's duty is to obey. It is to safeguard his or her Village. The manner in which you accomplish that can be as varied as Shinobi themselves are. Some do it by way of combat, others by way of word. Killing a threat to Kumogakure is fine. Dissuading an threat from harming is good. Preventing a person from becoming a threat in the first place is even better however. And that is the might of politics. With the Hayata-Yamauichi treaty we have effectively prevented four major players from becoming direct threats. Bear, Marsh, Lightning and Tenouza. Of course, a continued effort is required to make sure it remains that way. But make no mistake - either of those four could be pushed to a point where they answer the question "Kto kovo?" with "Us - Kumogakure". I hope that illustrated my earlier points somewhat? If you have any questions, go for it. Otherwise, feel free to pick a subject related to our topic of Politics and I will try to elaborate on it further."

It was then that the aged sensei painted the historical tale of the Kingslayer and the Treaty. Suika rapidly jotted notes as he spoke, but set her pen aside midway his lecture. His recollection was vivid enough where the girl imagined how everything unfolded. Heroes, betrayal, and retribution were all key aspects of this story, but what stood out most to her were the sacrifices a few made for the many. It was unfortunate to her that the ideologies of certain politics were potent enough to cause such bloodshed. Regardless, Suika recognized that the shinobi in this retelling operated off what they felt was right for the village and its leadership. Their loyalty was unparalleled; it was seemingly stupid to her, but she also viewed it admirable.

“Hm.” The kunoichi tilted her head. The mention of Kumogakure's diplomacy vision also perked her interests. How did they handle rising conflicts today? She was unable to fathom the decisions they made daily to ensure the village's success. They were potentially more terrifying than ones mentioned in Natsu's recollection of historical events. The thought made her shudder, but it also provoked further curiosity. Suika had so many questions; however, she knew she had to be prudent with the ones selected for today's short session.

The old man's next words captured her as a net did to a butterfly. The kunoichi usually kept face throughout most circumstances, but she was unable to disguise the slight frustration that swept over with the mention of Shieo and her recent exam. It was still a sore object, obviously. Her anger waned as Natsu pressed on the topic and shared his own observations. His clarifying words on the matter soothed the girl, yet, made her all the more confused about which stance was more aligned with Kumo's point of view. She noted, however, that both were quite frigid. All-in-all, Natsu's lecture was summarized to a single concept: a shinobi's duty was to obey. As much as she longed to blurt out the thousands of questions that ravaged her mind, she chose a path of deliberate silence. Her next inquiry would be carefully formulated.

“Natsu-sensei...” she answered after a brief pause. “I've put together a long list of questions to invoke further discussion on the topic of politics and about potential opportunities. I'd like to explore that someday soon with you and other instructors, but I'd rather ask something more personal to you, if you don't mind it.” Her aura was calm as her eyes exhibited a mix of inquisitiveness and carefulness. “Why did you dedicate your whole life fighting for Kumogakure? What has it done for you?” It was a simple query, but it held deep meaning for the girl. She respected Natsu and the way he carried himself; he was an encouraging man who radiated a type of kindness. His past as Kumo's Spymaster was probably a violent one, but Suika's otherworldly intuition sensed in him a caring and soft spirit. That, along with her own self-conflict as to what she stood for as a shinobi, was why the kunoichi was so invested in his answer. She patiently awaited his response.

"..but I'd rather ask something more personal to you, if you don't mind it.” Suika bodly stated. With a nod of his head, the elder motioned for the girl to speak her mind. “Why did you dedicate your whole life fighting for Kumogakure? What has it done for you?” The question was not entirely unexpected. As he had touched upon the subject of her exam, the Genin's face had revealed some of her emotions on the matter. That said, it was not a simple question however. Natsu removed his glasses and grabbed a piece of cloth. Slowly and deliberately, he cleaned of specks of dust which clouded the lenses. Only after he was satisfied and had donned the glasses once more, did he respond. "To explain my loyalty is to reveal some of my past to you. I expect you treat this with show of confidence with a sense of responsibility." With those words, the blonde would look his younger counterpart in the eye, his look serious.

"My father was a man of mediocre talent, both in his career as a Shinobi and as a politician. However, he did have ambition. Thus, he expected me to raise the family Do to higher echelons of society." One would wonder why he'd name his child so unfortunately then. "To this end, I received instruction from respected tutors and was not able to experience youth as most others. However, before I could fulfill this ambition of his - he died." Natsu explained calmly. "With the encouragement of my mother, I then focussed my attention to the life of a Shinobi. I graduated from the Academy and was promoted to Chunin not too long after. Given my scholary background, I was sent on a multi-year undercover mission at the academies in Raiden no Me - our Capital. I won't lie. I quickly grew upset with this assignment. While it was an easy life there - I had not become a Shinobi to become a student again. I requested for a reallocation to Kumogakure. In the end, I spend five years undercover. When I returned to the Village, I hardly knew any of my fellow Shinobi and lacked combat experience compared to peers who had been given different missions during those five years. Given that I still had that drive and ambition to prove my worth to my late father - I was rather distraught. How would I make the name Do great if I had accomplished nothing in all that time?"

"The answer to that question came in the form of my Sennin, Takaki Masao. He had been recalled from retirement to lead the Main Branch during a time of weakened leadership. The fist time I met him was at the very start of his tenure. He had gathered all available Shinobi from the branch together to introduce himself and to announce the new division leaders. He had the entire room in shock by some of his decisions - which included appointing me to Spymaster."
Natsu paused, reflecting on that fond memory. "I will admit I was as surprised as my colleagues. And very nervous. As much as I had wanted to prove myself - was I up to the challenge? I lacked the necessary experiences after all. This sentiment was shared by several of my peers and superiors, mind you. But Takaki Masao did not care one bit about their complaints. So I found myself at my new desk - placed just a few feet away from his own. Normally, it would have been the one for his Hand - Mochizuki Tama. She was not exactly an office-type person however." At this, a slight chuckle escaped his lips.

"I learned on the job, and I learned fast. I had to, after all. Expectations were high and the stakes even more so. After all, the first rumors of the Kingslayers had started to surface around that time. I cleaned up and expanded upon Kumogakure's Spy Network. I went on missions all over Lightning Country and even beyond - when I was Cloud's delegate for a diplomatic mission to Kirigakure - before it's destruction. And I met Shima Haruka. A woman I came to love." Natsu confessed. A sadness had crept into his voice when he spoke her name. "Not much later - Masao was imprisoned, leaving me to lead the Branch. I did what I could until he returned. And when the Hayata-Yamauichi Treaty was to be signed, I was there too. However, Masao gave his life hunting down the traitor Enishi. I had been the only one he permitted to follow him during his last efforts. And I failed saving him." It was a bitter confession. All those years of contemplation and reflection. Yet it still hurt as much as ever.

"I was appointed his successor. In the end, I held the office for a month - maybe two. Then I succumbed to a disease, placing me in a coma. When I awoke, Kumogakure had changed tremendously. Shima Haruka, the woman I mentioned before, was Ninth Raikage Shima Haruka. The one who was discovered to have betrayed and conspired against her predecessor - Hayata Shin. She had been executed by the time I woke up. Yet when the tenth Raikage Akira Saito explained what had transpired to me and that he had been the one to cast judgement upon Haruka, I did not strike in anger. Instead, I offered him my services as my new Kage. And I would have performed to the limits of my capacity had I remained healthy." Natsu grimaced. His disease was the only thing asides from Masao and Haruka's death to have harmed him so. "I've told you all this to show just how much I value loyalty to Kumogakure and her Kage. And now the crux of the story - where does this loyalty come from?"

"It is the love Kumogakure has given me in return. The respect she has bestowed upon me, the faith with which she has supported me. She raised me from mediocrity to the position of Sennin - no matter how brief my tenure. She has shown me the extent of my capabilities. She has rewarded me with experiences others could only dream of. She has done all this in the shape of her Villagers. From the common folk whom have relied on me to protect them from foreign threats and Kingslayers. To colleagues looking to me for orders and guidance during times of peril and times of comfort. From my Sennin and Kage who have ordered me to do the impossible and who were beside me when I conquered those insurmountable odds. From my Sennin and father in all but blood, Takaki Masao, who helped me grow into the man I have become. To Shima Haruka, who gave me her love despite my shortcomings."

"My loyalty comes from the all of the bonds I have created in the Village. Acquintances and friends. Division members and strike teams. Mentors and peers. Family and lovers. True loyalty is a thing which cannot be faked and cannot be bought. It comes from within. To find it however, you must reach out to those around you."
Natsu concluded. Any sorrow belonging to old times gone by was replaced by passion. The words might have been cliche but even after all those violent years, they were what Natsu stood for. However, the passionate story telling seemed to take it's toll as the former Spymaster started coughing. Wiping some of the spittle from his mouth with a handkerchief, he noticed it had tinted red. Such had started happening more frequently as of late. He looked up at Suika, hoping she had not noticed this detail or otherwise would not panic about it. "I'm sorry Suika-san. It appears we'll have to cut this session short. Please don't hesitate to compile your questions and deliver them to me. I'll arrange a follow-up as swiftly as I can."

He'd provide the girl with all needed details on how to contact him for the next session before making his way to the home. He'd report in to the Aesculapium tomorrow perhaps. He didn't enjoy doctors and clinics - but he'd have no choice to turn to them if things turned worse. He still had a role to play after all

Her question was received with good faith. Nodding her head as to assure her sensei of mutual trust, she opened up her perspective to his. The aged shinobi spoke of another tale - one with far more emotion and tragedy than the previously shared. Suika was entranced by his experience. In moments where his visible emotions flared, her expression reflected the same. She wasn't typically empathetic by any sorts, but the reality of his retelling was fueled with such intensity and passion. She could not help but to be taken by it.

Suddenly, the man coughed into his napkin as he finished explaining his past history and the main reason for his loyalty to the village. After exchanging contact information, she gestured at him respectfully. “Thank you, Natsu-san. You have really given me a lot to think about. Until we meet again.”

He truly did. Not only did she learn the basis of politics within Kumogakure, but she was struck and shaken by her old sensei's resolve. His loyalties were bound by the people in Cloud Village and the connections he created. That was something Suika lacked and an aspect of herself she needed to work on. “I refuse to become a self-absorbed serpent.” Her quest for a definitive path was not over, but Natsu's lecture today definitely made impact toward it. The gypsy girl had a lot to think about from now and until her next session with the man. “I will find my way.” She left the academy and went about her day.
