Ninpocho Chronicles

Ninpocho Chronicles is a fantasy-ish setting storyline, set in an alternate universe World of Ninjas, where the Naruto and Boruto series take place. This means that none of the canon characters exists, or existed here.

Each ninja starts from the bottom and start their training as an Academy Student. From there they develop abilities akin to that of demigods as they grow in age and experience.

Along the way they gain new friends (or enemies), take on jobs and complete contracts and missions for their respective villages where their training and skill will be tested to their limits.

The sky is the limit as the blank page you see before you can be filled with countless of adventures with your character in the game.

This is Ninpocho Chronicles.

Asuka had sent out summons a week before to the ones who she believed where ready to take on this challenge. It wouldn't be an easy one to say the least but she hoped all the ones brought here would pass with flying colors! If not, they could simply try again at a later date. Having said that she looked up to the sky and took a measure of the time, it was about.... 9 o clock in the morning. Of course the summon had time and place written on them, but she liked being early. Look a bit intimidating. The summons read.

Be prepared said:
Fellow Students, the day has finally come for you to grow out of your little shoes and join the Shinobi Ranks. Think of it as your first mission, the dangers will be real, you might as well get hurt. Choose to take this challenge and you will start your career, choose not to.... and I will be personally disappointed. Anyway, come to the entrance gate of the Forest of Death at 9 o clock sharp in one weeks time. I'll be waiting.

Uchiha Asuka

Now it was just time to wait, she wondered who would get here first. Her friend, or the soon to be Gennin.

It was the day that the next group of prospective shinobi were being evaluated. The day of the Genin exam and Ryoku was taking part in it. He assumed that this was also going to be part of his Chuunin exam, but he didn't get a fancy letter like the Genin did so he couldn't be sure. Since he wasn't one of the Genin prospects, he figured he should show up a little early in case Asuka-sama had any special instructions for him.

As he approached the entrance to the Forest of Death, he saw his Sennin waiting there, looking up at the sky. She was probably trying to figure out what time it was based on the position of the sun. He wondered how early she arrived and if she had been there for a while. "Heeeeey Asuka-samaaaaa!" he called out to her as he approached, waving his hand high over his head and sporting the stupidest of grins. As he got close enough to her to not warrant yelling anymore, he began to speak again. "I'm excited! This is gonna be fun! Do you need me to do anything before we get started or are you gonna give me my instructions along with the students?" It didn't seem like any of the students had arrived yet so if she wanted to, she had enough time for a quick explanation.

Forest of death, 9 o'clock.

That was what's written on the letter and it was also where Kei could be found, 9 o'clock sharp. Normally she would have come at least 5 minutes earlier but due to an errand she had to take care of, she considered herself quite lucky that she managed to arrive at the time indicated and not a moment later, at least according to her watch. When she arrived at the scene there were two people already there, one of them was one of her favorite Sannin. The other person standing there was someone else she didn't recognize...and appeared to be on very friendly terms with her.

The letter mentioned students which Kei assumed would mean there are other exam takers besides her and though she wanted to greet her sensei, she's also wasn't sure how to intrude on their conversation. Instead, the redhead would have waited until Asuka turned to her direction, raising her hand and nodded as a way of greeting. The girl then turned her attention slightly to the forest of death ahead of them which she assumed would be where they would take their test. She wasn't sure how to take it at first, on one hand, she was very eager to see what Asuka sensei had in store for them. On the other hand, this would be her first time traversing across the forest so the terrain would prove quite disadvantageous to her.

Simply put, she was quite nervous. Taking a deep breath before exhaling, the girl slapped her cheek together to psyche herself. She just needed to be on top form and hopefully, everything would work out. Now to wait for the other students.

It was going to be an interesting series of events, that was the first thought that passed through the Hyuuga's mind as he made his way to the forest of death Chinatsu rising to his side with a slight chuckle. "Don't you think this may be a bit too much, they are only kids after all." The man came to a stop at the edge of the forest looking to the being on his shoulder raising an eyebrow. "Compassion Chinatsu? That's a new thing for you." The being grimaced at the notion shaking it's head before turning his attention to the forest. "Not at all, I merely jest though lets give them a bit of a surprise with our arrival and make this a bit of a show."

There was no way the man could turn down such a suggestion taking a deep breath as Chinatsu's form made its way back into the gauntlet. "Just make it quick we've done this enough times after all." With that Chinatsu's form spread over the man's body the black mass coating him as the newly formed being cracked it's neck to the side leaping towards the students and Sennin landing beside Asuka with a thunderous slam the ground buckling under the beings form taking a moment to look towards the students that had already arrived before rising to its full height towering above the main branch Sennin.

"Here as requested though I do hope this will be an interesting en devour Asuka, After all I see only a few snacks before me at this time."

After receiving the summons, Masami had a week to prepare for whatever obstacle she needed to climb over to finally join the ranks of Leaf’s forces. Her preparations included general improvements of herself, as much as she could, due to the mysterious nature of the events; other than that, there were few means of preparing for the unknown. Nervousness often crept inside of her heart, but she mustered her mettle, steeled her nerves and continued to train in anticipation of the day to come. It seemed she finally gathered enough prowess, and now it would be put to the test. With the possibility of getting hurt, it was a trial by fire in Fire Country. Time whirred by faster than she imagined, and even though she wasn’t sure if she prepared enough, today was the day.

Before deciding to become a shinobi, Masami wasn’t nearly as devoted to being punctual. She shed that habit in recent years and now she made her way to Forest of Death, arriving not a minute too soon. Before she could examine the figures present at the time or usher out a greeting, a huge mass of black and ferocity slammed against the ground. The impact nearly knocked her off her feet, but she stabilized herself for the time being as she attempted to get a handle on the situation. ”What in the…” the Uchiha muttered under her breath, seemingly at a loss for words. Had Kei, Asuka-sensei, and an unfamiliar figure not been in her peripheral, she may not have even noticed their presence due to the gravity of the sight before her.

It was her first time witnessing anything like this.

Mouth dry and hairs standing on end, she swallowed her pent-up saliva. He seemed familiar with the Sennin, which assuaged some of her fears but not all of them. Not at all. Steadying her breathing, she minced together a small, “I-I’m here guys, yup…” Given the commentary, Masami had no idea what to expect from this ordeal. An endless pit of anxiety gnawed at her stomach, justifiably so in this situation, but she did her best to curb it and show resolve. She hoped some insight would be shed on the topic, for her confusion was growing by the moment.

Kosho received a letter from a Uchiha Asuka. The letter seemed to be an invitation to participate in a challenge that if passed would grant Kosho the rank of Genin. The introductory rank given to those who in there respective village have been recognized as shinobi. Yudo and Yuki had been working toward this for quite some time now. They hadn’t been born into the life of a shinobi and trained at a young age like many of the other students at the academy. But what Yudo and Yuki lacked in experience they made up for in curiosity and hard work. Still though neither were truly adjusted to this shinobi lifestyle and understood they had much to learn to catch up to their peers.

In the week of preparation for the upcoming challenge in the Forest of Death the two siblings prepared in different ways. Yuki studied the material that had been introduced and mentioned in the Ninja Academy. Yuki was told by his sister that he easily distracted and startled without much effort, she stressed to him that such behavior wouldn’t do in a serious exam. In an effort to improve this weakness in between studying Yuki practiced leaf concentration per Yudo’s suggestion, her suggestion made him recall that his sister would do this form of training quite a bit when they first joined the academy.

Yudo on the other hand mostly continued to do what she focused on in the weeks prior she trained her bloodline as well as taijutsu. It seemed she way still obsessed with making Kosho’s body stronger. Though one day prior to today Yudo spent the entire day training chakra control by tree climbing and water walking, perhaps a last ditch effort to prepare for the Forest of Death?

Either way everything that they have done since they joined the and perhaps even before then would be tested today. Yuki arrived at the Forest of Death hours before the scheduled time to explore a bit and walk off his nerves. He had never been to the forest before he assumed that he wasn’t allowed to explore the grounds, but he figured that today he would be here either way so why not explore. He had been wandering around for so long that all the trees began to look the same. While exploring he attempted to walk in a straight path in hopes of not getting lost, but the terrain didn’t really provide a straight path in certain areas. The entire time Yuki spent in the forest he had this odd feeling that he was being watched. Finally realizing that he spent quite a bit of time here he began running back to entrance past the trees that all looked the same. Yuki wanted to climb atop one of the trees to try and verify he was heading in the right direction by finding the entrance but the forest in many areas was so dense that he thought it would be a waste of time. He just continued to run trusting that he was going in the right direction.

Eventually Yuki saw several new faces and even one familiar one. Facing in Yuki’s direction was a white haired boy Yuki had never seen before who wore an interestingly large grin on his face. Two of the other new faces were young kunoichi both with beautiful purple eyes. Smiling Yuki was drawn to greet the familiar face in the crowd. A thunderous slam interrupted Yuki’s movement as a large ebony body seemed to make the ground beneath it sink with its landing. Frozen in place Yuki took several deep breaths “Don’t scream. Don’t scream.” He thought to himself and finally walked forward slightly. “Erm.. Go-od mor-ning everyone.” Yuki said with his voice slightly cracking waving at the crowd of people.

“Yuki we’re most likely the weakest ones here, so try not to make us look even weaker. It’s time to focus, everything from here on out could be a test.”

“Right! Thanks onee-sama!”

“And keep your guard up we don’t need to die today.”

“Right!! Thanks onee-sama!!”

“Stop replying to me! Focus!”

“Ri-. Sorry onee-sam...”

When Yuuko recieved her letter for Uchiha Asuka she was a tad bit surprised. She didn't think she'd have the chance to move on to becoming a Gennin so soon after joining the academy. Of course the more she thought about it the more she realized she had been there quite a bit of time. Yuuko figured this incorrect thought could be summed up to one important aspect of the time she'd spent at the academy. She realized that time did, in fact, fly when you were having fun. Over her time at the academy she had made new friends, met new teachers, and even had a small fight. She felt that she would be at the very least moderately prepared for the test that lied in front of her. Itsuki, her old mentor, had told her that she must expect her Gennin Exam to be very difficult. Yuuko knew very well to trust his word on that, and so after receiving her letter she would immediately amp up her training regiment. The setting would be the Forest of Death. Because of this Yuuko would spend quite a bit of her time training with her tree climbing. She made sure not to neglect any of her other skills though. Tree climbing would seem like the obvious choice to train with in preparation for the Forest of Death, but who really knew what the exam would entail? Other than the instructor of course Yuuko figured that number was limited to a select few if any others at all. In any event she would train, and train hard at that. Training her ninjutsu, body strength, stamina, and especially her chakra.

When the day finally came for the exam to take place Yuuko would wake up bright, and early to prepare herself for the day. She would head on her way to the entrance gate of the Forest of Death making sure to be early. When she arrived it would seem she was perhaps a bit to early? It seemed nobody was there yet other than the instructor. Normally she would go to introduce herself, but for once in her life Yuuko decided against it. She figured her extra would be better spent doing some more training considering the magnitude of the exam she would soon face. So she would wait spending her time in a nearby tree. Climbing the tree, and then climbing back down with an occasional rest. It wasn't long before some other students started to fill in, and as they did Yuuko to made her way over to the group. Once she was there she would continue waiting until she caught sight of her friend Kosho. She'd smile, and wave at him moving in his direction. As she did so a loud, booming noise could be heard, and the ground would shake. Yuuko would turn her smile still on her face to look at the cause of the noise. She'd look with wide eyes at the interesting black organism before turning her attention back to Kosho. Now she'd move to him quicker almost skipping. "Wow Kosho did you see that thing? Isn't it so weird, and interesting?" She'd ask laughing a bit her happiness seeming not to be disrupted in any way by the creature. "It's great to see you Kosho! I'm so excited we get to take the exam at the same time!" She'd almost shout quite happily.

Asuka waved at the first one who came. Remembering his file, he had great potential and would probably be able to pass this exam. The next one to come over was no other than her friend. Yukio, or Chinatsu? Or both? Who exactly knew. But it still proved useful. Afterwards, Kei arrived which was good, two people showed up. One of which could actually become Chuunin.

It wasn't long before the rest of the examinees appearead. She figured they all had questions and they wouldn't be wrong to ask them. In any case Asuka raised her arm to stop Yukio from actually eating them. "There'll be time for snacks don't you worry." Asuka giggles as she turned towards the people she was going to give the test.

"Allright." Asuka clapped her hands together ready to start explaining. "Welcome to your graduating exam, or in some cases. Chuunin exam. I hope all of you pass it, but I do expect not all of you to pass it." Asuka smiled, pointed to the creature standing next to her. "This here is my... little... friend. His has quite an appetite. Hell, it takes a fortune to feed him." With that introduction Asuka pointed to Ryoku "This guy here is Ryoku, he gonna be the leader but not neccesarily someone you need to follow. That's going to be your choice. As for your test."

Asuka took out 4 keys. Each representing one of the elements, Fire, Water, Air and Lightning. "This test will be divided into two phases. First, find the door inside the forest of death, insert the key into the right keyhole, that'll get you into the second phase."

With that, she sighed. "All 4 keys need to placed at the same time for the door to open, but there's a catch. There are only 4 keys, but 5 of you. At least one of you will fail this exam, and won't graduate unless whoever it is does something unimaginable. The Shinobi career isn't for everyone. Take Keys from each other, use any means necessary to get to that door. I'll explain the second phase to whoever gets through the door."

Asuka pointed to her friend. "This guy's job is to catch you, he'll have a handicap so you all can have enough time to prepare. Rules are simple, no maming, no killing, no permanent damage." With a smile, Asuka threw the keys into the entrance of the forest. "Have fun!" Asuka vanished

[Everyone choose a number between 1 and 5, this will determine if you get a key. You can't choose the same number]

Ryoku examined the towering black creature standing before him in awe. What was it? Was it some kind of Youkai? It didn’t seem to give off the same, dark feel of a youkai. However, it did look somewhat demonic. Would they have to fight this? Seemed a bit more intense than his Genin exam..

Ryoku tried to distract himself from the awesomely terrifying figure in front of him and looked around at the prospective genins’ faces. He had never interacted with any of them, however he did recognize the scrawny boy and the green-haired girl from a spar they had near the academy. He was happy to see them there. They were both talented and deserved to become fully-fledged ninja. Ryoku began to wonder what the other two were capable of.

As Asuka-sama explained the exam, something seemed off. The test was set up in a way that would benefit them to work as a team, however it was also set up in a way that almost forced them to look out for their own interests. Not to mention the fact that Ryoku had been a ninja for years. If things went sideways and it turned into a free-for-all, he was at a disgusting advantage. The solution seemed obvious to Ryoku. Or at least a solution. He had a plan and he would just need for the students to trust him. But first, he had to figure out who the unlucky person who didn’t get a key would be..

A towering ebony monstrosity appeared before Kei, descended onto the ground like thunder. The redhead took a step and a half back in response, a clear look of surprise on her face. She had heard about strange creatures roamed the land from her father's stories but nothing came to mind about this particular beast. Subconsciously she had taken her martial stance in response but her intention was not to engage this thing in any way, but rather to get out of the way of potential assault and possibly fled the area. The girl was eager to battle, yes, but she was not suicidal.

The creature began to address the Sannin about snacks and judging from how it didn't simply engage any of them on the spot, the girl eased her stance slightly. She didn't like the tone it used when it mention snacks but aggravating such creature was simply a bad idea. Keeping the creature in her peripheral vision, the girl nodded slightly at Masami's greeting before she turned to the other newcomers.

One of them was a boy with grayish hair and maroon eyes. The girl had seen him in the academy before but only in passing, as they were not in the same class. He didn't look very confident but then again that could be attributed to that thing's presence. With no way to gauge his abilities, the girl then turned towards the other member of the group that she didn't recognize.

This time it was a girl with dark green hair, who laughed and made fun of the creature appearance. She didn't seem to exude any sign of shock or shaken by the creature's appearance which made Kei question her sense of self-preservation. Interesting was definitely not the word she would use to describe the creature, especially one that looked like it'll kill most of them with just a single blow.

Finally, she directed her attention to the remaining boy in the group. The redhead thought she might recognize him up close but nothing came to her mind. Tilting her head, the girl wondered if he was an examiner as well or at least Asuka's assistant. Before she could ponder further Asuka began to explain their test to them.

In short, find the keys and avoid getting caught by the creature at all cost. Asuka mentioned something about it being handicapped but delightfully forget to mention how so. To be honest, Kei felt the exam was a bit much but then again she did mention it double as a chuunin one as well. If she did well here it would that mean there was a possibility she would skip genin and immediately rise to chuunin rank? Though it was unlikely the thought motivated her to do more. When Asuka threw the key in the forest, the girl would turn her attention to Masami.

"Macchan, let's meet up later." the girl uttered in a hushed voice.

If one needed to pass this test, they would need an ally. As she knew none in the group aside from the raven-haired girl, her choice couldn't be any less obvious. But first, Kei needed to find the elemental key Asuka mentioned.

Yuki smiled as he watched Yuuko skip over to him. He laughed anxiously feeling torn between several feelings. He was happy to see Yuuko, but also nervous about the exam, not to mention the hulk of a creature that seconds ago seemingly appeared out of nowhere slamming into the ground.

“Hey Yuuko, seeing you here makes me feel a bit better.”

Before Yuki could say much else the woman that Yuki assumed was Uchiha Asuka, the exam proctor, giggled and moments later clapped her hands gaining Yuki’s attention. Then she went on to introduce everyone that was obviously not academy students with the exception of herself. Afterwards she explained the challenge ahead of all the examinees. It seemed someone in the group was sure to fail which didn’t exactly make Yuki more confident. Yuki had already expected that Asuka’s little friend would be acting as an obstacle for the participants of the exam, he was just relieved to hear that murder was against the rules.

“No one here is allowed to kill. So we don’t have to worry about dying onee-sama.”

“That doesn’t mean that we won’t die here. Rules are broken everyday. Don’t get comfortable and let your guard down, this exam is essentially a free-for-all.”

Yuki’s eyes widened, heart accelerated, and his senses heightened as he finally realized the how much of a disadvantage he was at. Before him was a shinobi in his group that qualified to be a Chunnin who counted in one of the four passing slots, he didn’t really know what anyone here was capable of, he knew first hand how large and how much of a maze this forest was from earlier there was no guarantees that someone wouldn’t die or be murdered, and if that ebony creature landed a clean hit on him he would almost certainly fail the exam or possibly die. “Yuki! Pay attention!” To make matters even worse Asuka had already thrown the keys and vanished. Yuki managed to lose focus despite all his and Yudo’s efforts.

Finally regaining focus Yuki prepared himself for what was ahead.

Masami’s amethyst eyes watched more examinees flood into the scene. It was a relief to know that she wasn’t the only one unnerved, especially considering the gargantuan mass of black towering over them. One individual, like her, seemed less enthused about the idea of the encounter. At the very least she wasn’t the only one.

In direct contrast, he was immediately swarmed by the other latest entrant thereafter, whose seemingly boundless mental resilience deterred them from batting an eye towards the ghoulish abomination that embodied certain death for her and everyone around them. Was it a perverse outlook on life, or did a lack of value in their own encourage such a disposition? Or perhaps years of experience against hardship moulded her into an unwavering aegis at the ripe age of ten or eleven. In a non-simulated situation, misguided bravado was a liability Nagisa-sensei told her about a week ago, so she hoped it wasn’t that either.

So as the lunatic trotted off somewhere, unjustified in her confidence, Masami rubbed the bridge of her nose, a weary exhalation parting from her lips as her senior and the monstrosity exchanged banter about eating them all. When she heard that the exam would be a hybridization of two different evaluations, she raised an eyebrow. They didn’t expect all of them to pass, which confused her and made her more curious about what they were being asked of. The one salivating about pocketing them in his stomach was a friend of Asuka, and the other boy with white hair was the one experienced leader of the other cast—which was the otherwise completely green group of academy students.

Two phases, five people, only four keys. Masami had a hard time wrapping her head around the endeavour after it was explained. The shinobi career wasn’t for everyone, yet she wasn’t sure what personal deficiencies this assessment would illuminate should they all fail, or what proficiencies it was testing. To say that it was a harsh evaluation for academy students was an understatement, but there wasn’t anything she could do but try. Her mind a labyrinth brimmed with confusion, she shrugged and watched keys be flung into the aptly named Forest of Death.

”Don’t split the party, let’s work with Ryoku and the others too,” she said in response to Kei, the three-tomoe pattern of the fully matured Sharingan swirling into now crimson eyes. Working together was usually the best option, and with her aspirations to become a Med-Nin, supporting and heightening the team’s chance of survival was an appointed duty. Five heads were better than one.

Yuuko would smile kindly at Kosho upon hearing his words. She was also glad that a friend would be taking the exam with her. She had intended to return the feelings of happiness to Kosho. Though before she had a chance to reply to him the instructor began to speak. Yuuko would stand near Kosho as she listened to Asuka describe what the exam would entail. Well really what the first part of the exam would entail with little mention of anything after that. It seemed the exam was teamwork orientated. Though at the same time one of the students was guaranteed to fail. It was a bit of a peculiar situation. Not to mention the large creature that would be attempting to interfere while they did this. Any feelings of "What an interesting creature!" had gone away now as Yuuko saw it would be an opponent of sorts. It did at least appear that the creature couldn't kill them which was quite nice. Still Yuuko would have to make sure she was prepared to deal with such a difficult opponent should she have to. Yuuko was likely the weakest of the people at the exams. She wasn't discouraged by that at all, but she wasn't dumb enough to think it didn't matter. She didn't think she would be useless in a group effort though. She had a good grasp on ninjutsu, and could even heal people.

As Asuka threw the keys into the forest Yuuko would attempt to follow them with her eyes. "We should try to work together with the others Kosho. We'll probably need the help if we want to pass." She say to Kosho as she followed the keys. Yuuko was hopeful that the others would all share the thought to work together. She also hoped maybe there was a way for everyone to pass? The instructor had said it would be possible for the one without the key to pass. She had a feeling she would need to find out more in order to judge this though. Though as of right now attempting to find a key was a more important factor. They would need to move quickly, and get as far away from the large black creature before it would decide to make a move.

Ryoku would find himself running towards the entrance, Asuka spoke about a Handicap for the monster. But did that suggest a time handicap? Or strength Handicap. Only thinking about the threat looming over them, Ryoku didn't think about the keys as soon as he sprinted into the forest. Entering it, with no key in hand.

Kei looked around for her friend and as soon as she saw everyone moving again it was clear it was better to get way as fast and far as possible. Not before she was able to grab one of the keys, as soon as she did it seemed as though a light breeze passed through her hand. With close inspection, she would see she has gained the Wind Key. Light as a feather, delicate.

Kosho would follow after Kei, looking around for the keys while keeping an eye on his teammate. While walking through the front gates, the temperature rose and he quickly found the source. The Fire Key. Hot to the touch.

Masami didn't waste any time, she had to quickly get away from the monster and start her exam. As agreed upon, the group would follow but not before something fell from the sky. Almost hitting her on the head. Thankfully with her reflexes, she caught it and the object cackled on her palm. The Lightning Key was in her possession.

Yuuko was the last, but not least, to move. Before he entered the forest he spotted a strange object sinking into the ground. Sliding, he got into time to catch it. The Water Key. With that in mind, he followed the group into the forest.

Wasn't long before all the students joined Ryoku., it seemed as though they had taken him up on the suggestion to team up and work together. With him leading on front, the group went west... or what seemed like west. Unfortunately the sun wouldn't be much help thanks to the dense trees that sourrounded them.

Going forward, after a bit of walking (or running) the group would came upon a clearing. But this clearing could be seen to have been modified for a purpose. It had a metal plating in the center, three big wires connected the metal plating in the ground to the trees. Each having two smaller wires. The one on the left, Blue and Yellow, the one straight in front Red and Blue, the one to the right Yellow and red. Upon closer inspection it seemed as though the metal plating was covered with Explosive Tags. Even inspecting closer it could be noted that each wire used the metal plate as a hub. If one disconnected, the rest would activate and go most probably go boom. What would the group do?

Behind them, there was sound in the trees and bushes, something was moving, something was watching them. Out of nowhere, two really strange creatures jumped out. Snarling and growling at the group.

The creatures seemed scary but not that strong. It seemed as though they could be compared to a.... big snake or spider. With strategy it would be guaranteed they would be taken out. What would the group do?

”Impressive,” Ryoku thought to himself as the purple eyes of the dark-haired girl swirled into a fully-formed Sharingan. However, the fact that he was impressed was slightly suppressed by the fact that the students were whispering to one another. They must have felt that they were competing for the keys. Ryoku had to ensure that this was not a problem for anyone and that they continued to work together, or else this task was going to be harder on everyone.

“Everyone, grab a key and follow me!” Ryoku said to the students, running through the gate. Hopefully it was clear that he didn’t intend to grab a key, so they didn’t have to worry about that. He wasn’t going to worry about them, but if he did have to grab one, he would hand it to whatever student didn’t get one. It was neither fair, nor fun, to compete with students. Plus, he wanted to give them a chance to prove themselves, but if they did something careless or lost the key, he wouldn’t hesitate to grab it for himself.

Ryoku thought back to when he saw the scrawny one walking out of the Forest. He looked like he came from North, and since he didn’t seem to find the door that way, Ryoku decided to head a different direction. He began running west, making sure not to move fast enough to outrun the students. After a few seconds, he looked back and was pleased to see all four of the students in tow.

“Good,” he said softly with a smile. He cleared his throat and began to speak louder so that they could all hear him while they were still moving. “Alright so we don’t have much time but we should do a brief introduction of ourselves and our talents.” It was important that Ryoku knew what they were capable of in order to devise an efficient strategy for whatever trials awaited them. “I’ll go first. I’m Hitsugaya Ryoku of the Ishi Clan. I’ve been a Genin for like three years. Maybe four. And I train under the former Main Branch Sennin, Yuu Kenshin, in Unarmed Taijutsu so I would consider that my specialty. I know the odd ninjutsu here and there, but I don’t rely on those too much.” He looked around at the students and gave them a smile and said, “Who’s next?” Kei. Masami. Kosho. Yuuko. He listened to all of them introduce themselves and took mental notes of everything they said. This would prove important.

Not long after finishing their introductions, they came upon a clearing with a puzzle of sorts. Ryoku stopped running and analyzed it for a second. The metal plating seemed as though it was protecting an item of value, but it was also booby-trapped with explosives. Whatever was potentially in there could prove important to their test, or it could be a red herring to waste their time. Should they try to solve it, or keep moving and ignore it? The thought of the large, monster proctor sat in the front of Ryoku’s thoughts as he almost made the decision to ignore it. Then two creatures jumped out of the forest. If he didn’t feel pressured to make a quick decision before, he definitely would now.

How could he maximize time efficiency?

“We have to split up,” Ryoku said. In his mind, he felt hesitant, but his verbalization was confident. If he sounded hesitant, then the students would be hesitant. Two of them would continue to scout ahead in hopes of finding the door, the other two would attempt to solve this puzzle, and Ryoku would handle the creatures. This was a genin exam after all. If these creatures were a combat obstacle, they should be easy enough for Ryoku to handle. He also stayed behind because this group was more likely to be attacked by the large monster if he was pursuing them from behind and he would rather be there when he showed himself. If the monster decided to go around them to the front group, at least Ryoku would have time to get to them if he solved the puzzle quickly enough. Now to decide who would be in which groups.

It was obvious from the very beginning that these academy students already knew one of the other students. This would make pairing them off easier. Their teamwork would be better if they were already comfortable with each other. Kei and Masami would be one group, Kosho and Yuuko would be the other. But which group would stay and which would go? “Does anyone have a headset?” Ryoku asked, but judging by the looks of the students, the answer to that question was no. So, using that as an easy reason for splitting them up was a no-go.

So, the two that scouted ahead had to be able to take care of themselves in case they were ambushed by more creatures. Ryoku had watched Kosho and Yuuko fight first-hand and was quite impressed. He knew that if they scouted ahead, they’d be perfectly fine. But their ninjutsu would also be very beneficial for what he was planning to do with this puzzle. He remembered back to when the large, black monster first revealed himself at the gates. Kei was the only one who instinctively got into a battle stance. She was well-trained at the very least, even if she hadn’t seen combat. Which she might have for all Ryoku knew. And her friend, Masami, had already fully matured her Sharingan. A very impressive feat for an academy student. Those two would be just fine on their own.

“Kei-san,” Ryoku said, turning to Kei and reaching into his item pouch, pulling out a signal flare and extending it to her. “You and Masami keep moving forward. Try to find that door. If you find it, signal us. If you’re ambushed by more of these creatures, I know that you two can handle them. If not, don’t hesitate to signal us and I’ll be right there. But be careful, this signal will give away your position to the giant monster chasing behind us so be on guard. But even if you haven’t used the signal and that monster shows up, signal me immediately. That thing is strong enough to have to be handicapped to be a part of this exam, and we don’t even know what the handicap is, so don’t engage without me.” Who was Ryoku kidding. He wished he could fight that thing since the moment he laid eyes on it. That’s all he really wanted to do was fight it. “Have fun,” he said with a smile to Kei and Masami.

Ryoku turned to Yuuko and Kosho. “Your task is gonna need a little more precision and coordination. I’ve seen your skills and I’ve seen your brains in actions. I know that you can handle this. That thing over there..” he pointed at the metal plate. “probably contains something we need to make this exam easier. But it appears to be heavily booby-trapped. We don’t have too much time to analyze the puzzle itself before that creature gets here so we have to act hard and fast. I’m going to try something that might be crazy, and I need you two to use your ninjutsu to dampen the explosion in case things go sideways. In an ideal situation, the explosion doesn’t harm whatever is down there. And be careful, we don’t know how the explosive tags are distributed. They could also be underground. We have to do this perfectly. I’m going to fight off these creatures and when you two are ready, I’m going in.” Ryoku looked at them for a little while to make sure that they understood and that they were ready. When they seemed good, he gave them a large, goofy smile and said, “What a great day,” and he launched himself at the closest creature as fast as he could and slammed his fist against the side of what seemed like the creature’s head. Then he shifted over to the other creature and kicked it as swiftly as he could. If the creatures would recover from his assault, he would be ready to defend his comrades until they gave him the signal.

Ryoku leapt up into the air above the plate and did a handsign, summoning five clones. As Ryoku and his clones came down, they each landed, two to a wire, and struck them, careful to strike at the exact same time, severing each large and small wire simultaneously. After severing the wires, he quickly brought up his arms to guard his face and brace for the potential explosion that might follow his actions.

Kei barely glanced at the people surrounding her, her eyes had already spotted one of the keys. A burst of speed followed as girl leaned in and snatch the wind key and the moment she does so, the redhead felt a light breeze focused on her hand. Pocketing it in her pouch, she was prepared to fight the others for it but was spared from doing so after hearing Roku called out. Did he just forfeit his claim to the key altogether?

Puzzled, the girl glanced at Masami's direction again and nodded. Her friend did advise to work together with the other students and it looked like Roku had a plan in mind. Though she was wary of their fellow shinobi, she didn't see any reason to go against Roku or the others at this point. For now, they all shared the same interest..proceeding to phase two of the test without being caught by that black monstrosity.

When it comes to introducing oneself, one usually imagine that it would be done while facing each other and most importantly, being stationary. However their situation did not afford them the luxury which means they would have to do it as they move. The lack of crashing sound behind them was reassuring at least but the redhead reminded herself that the creature could always decide to ambush them rather than outright chasing them.

"Nanjirou Kei, a practitioner of Nanjirou school of swordsmanship. As for Ninjutsu, I'm the same as you Hitsugaya-san." Which was to say, she knew a few but not enough to consider herself any good at it. Not by a long shot. She had also followed Ryoku's example of omitting any mention of Genjutsu, which would be impossible to use at her current level.

Kei soon stopped with the others near a complicated puzzle of sorts, eying it wearily. Wires, metal trapdoor and even explosive tags. Asuka clearly didn't waste any effort when it comes to preparing this elaborate exam. Just what lies under the trap door?
A key? A scroll? A completely useless item that would poke fun at them for being distracted easily?

The train of thought was interrupted as two creatures would appear out of nowhere to attack them. What the hell are those black things? Spawns of whatever chasing their group in first place? Ryoku was quick to react among them all and immediately engage the creatures though Kei would also try to back him up where necessary.

Soon after handling the creatures, Ryoku decided to split up their team. Kei and Masami would be in a scout group, looking for any signs of door or keyhole to push forward. The remaining group would stay behind and try to solve the puzzle behind this metal trap door. As she didn't even have a clue even where to start, she would be more than happy to take the signal flare, nodding slightly as she listened to Ryoku's advise.

"Copy that Hitsugaya-san. We'll see you soon."

Splitting them up would present two targets for the creature to go after. If they were lucky, it would take too long to decide between them which way to go thus allowing them to find the door in time. If not....well that's what the signal flare is for.

"Let's go Macchan."

Her expression was hardened as she focuses on the task ahead of them and continue moving to the west.

Intentions aligned with Ryoku’s own, Masami intended to grab one of the keys and follow him. Dividing the group into individuals and competing with one another sounded like an atrocious idea to her, a good way to be picked off by the monster that seemingly would give chase. He already left a positive impression on the Uchiha, for she respected those who could acknowledge the most sensible courses of action in the right time. It was no wonder he was being considered for an even higher promotion.

With no time to spare, she darted across the expanse while in pursuit, avoiding the towering greenery. Perceptive eyes owed to her lineage scanned the vicinity, and uncannily enough, heeded a key plummeting from the sky moments before it could crash into her. Refined reflexes exhibited, her arm shot up and her hand snatched the object out of the air. As she studied the key for a moment, she took note of it exuding an odd crackling. Equipped with the ability to study chakra, if it contained any she would be privy to it. Either way, she couldn’t help but be reminded of her second chakra nature, lightning, when she scrutinized its tendencies.

In time, the group congregated, joining Ryoku’s company. She noticed that Kei was there as well, which meant she must have heeded her advice earlier. Knowing that pleased her, because the idea of stragglers didn’t strike her as advantageous, nor would it be safe for the one who strayed off. She listened to Ryoku ask for brief introductions, which was crucial. Should they not know one another’s abilities, then it would be hard to work together and formulate plans. The Uchiha learned of his tenure as a Genin, and the esteemed individuals he trained under. Hearing about his specialty in the physical arts brightened her mood, because it was an area she lacked in immensely.

The conclusion of Kei’s introduction signalled the start of her turn. Rubbing the back of her head, a cheesy grin of her own unraveled. ”So, hey. I’m Uchiha Masami, and I’ve been a student for a few years now. I specialize in Genjutsu and Fire Ninjutsu techniques, and I can often copy what I don’t know with my eyes. Oh! And I wanna be a Medical Ninja like Nagisa-sensei, so if any of you get injured or poisoned, I can patch you up with Medical Ninjutsu,” she said, leaning in for a moment to speak in a hush, one hand next to her mouth, ”Also, Asuka-sensei is super pretty.” And that concluded her introduction.

One by one, the others introduced themselves thereafter, and she listened intently unless any substantial anomalies occurred. Proceeding along with the group, they came across an unnatural implement in the scenery. This unorthodox plating, fixed with a wire-trigger layer of explosives, seemed to guard something of uncertain importance. To make matters worse, two snarling creatures emerged from the vegetation behind them and growled at them. ”What in the… huh,” she stammered, but then oddly received inspiration as to what her next macabre painting would be as she looked at them…

Glancing at the key gripped firmly in her hand, she reckoned the trap could be there to throw them off or waste time, but it could also be the unimaginable test Asuka mentioned earlier that would allow the individual without a key to proceed. Thankfully, Ryoku came to a swift decision.

Masami may have been opposed to splitting up earlier, but that was because they hadn’t yet cemented that they would work as a team. Dividing up roles in an organized manner was much preferable. Told that they needed to split up by Ryoku, the Uchiha nodded, not harbouring any disagreement, but curious about what plan splitting up entailed. The only thing she could imagine was using it to cover more ground, or investigate different issues at once. After being asked whether she had a headset, she shook her head, and felt a pit of regret gnawing at her stomach. Masami got the impression that bringing one of those would have made any group activity like this a lot easier in the communication department.

The plan came to light, and Ryoku revealed what she and Kei were to do. The pairing made sense, and she was impressed with not only his decision making, but his perceptiveness in heeding the interpersonal relationships and prowess; it was an integral detail that would smoothen their ability to work as a cohesive unit. Kei was given a flare, which was helpful. Masami could devise a makeshift flare using Ninjutsu, but it would take chakra, and the appointed flare would not. Nodding, she knew she needed to remain resolute, even if endeavoured to scout ahead. Lazy as she could be off-duty or off-training, she took serious things seriously. Ever since Nagisa-sensei taught her that meditative technique, she had a place in her mind to go to when she needed to calm her nerves.

They could be targeted by the monster, but she trusted in her teammates to come to their aid, and she trusted Kei to use the signal flare when it came to that.

”Alright, we’ll do our best Ryokkun,” she said with a thumbs up, inadvertently getting into the habit of assigning endearing nicknames to those she considered her friends. With that, would proceed forward as told alongside the sword-touting Nanjirou. Turning her attention towards her, she spoke. ”So, remember that thing I did back with Soku-sensei? Yeah. I’m gonna do that again.”

Temporarily clenching the key between her teeth, she performed a sequence of hand seals. Completing the technique, even as she dashed ahead through treetops and past obstacles looking for a door, bits of various minerals collected before head and formed an eye. Like earlier that week it would serve as a surveillance device resembling a glass eye, stylized with the tomoe of the Sharingan. It freely scouted around her, covering areas she could not with her own eyes, thus expanding her range and awareness as she scouted ahead in search of the door.

As the keys were being thrown Yuki felt the temperature rise and followed where he believed was the source of heat was. On his way he looked back to check where Yuuko was and he met her eye she suggested that they work together with the rest of the group. Yuki wasn’t opposed to the idea at all it was probably the best idea given the circumstances.

“We can follow the group and figure this out together.” Yuki said looking back to Yuuko.

The only Genin in the group seconds later yelled for everyone to follow him hopefully solidifying the plan for the group to work together.

All the while Yuki had still been following the source of heat that appeared after the proctor threw the keys and by this time he’d finally reached it picking it up. The key was hot to touch almost burning his hand, looking up the rest of the group was going deeper into the forest in a different direction from where Yuki traveled earlier today. Yuki pocketed the key and ran to catch up to the group.

Running with the group following the Genin boy, Ryoku it seemed it was time for introductions. Yuki listened to the introductions and when it seemed time for him to speak an awkward grin grew across his face as rubbed the back of his neck and said “Hey again everyone my name is Kosho. Uhh. I’m not sure if I have a specialty, but I’m capable of weapon creation and a few blood ninjutsu. Oh! And Slashing Taijutsu!” trying not to take up too much time with his introduction.

After the introductions concluded and group continued to travel through the forest and eventually came up to an unnatural clearing. Yuki saw what seemed like a trap, a metal plating covered in explosive notes on the ground with several sets of wires connected to it. As the entire group came to a halt analyzing the situation Yuki couldn’t help but wonder what the handicap on the ebony hulking creature from earlier was. This situation would certainly slow the group down significantly if they didn’t make a decision on what to do fast. Then as if to make matters worse two small, odd creatures jumped out from the protection of the forest’s vegetation.

Ryoku spoke up breaking the nerve racking silence stating that the group had to split up and shortly asking if anyone had a headset. As the silence seemed to pick up again, Ryoku broke it again and went over the team’s plan. Kei and Masami were to split from the group in search of one of the doors with a signal flare that Ryoku gave them and use it to notify the group if they were ambushed. Ryoku, Yuuko, and Yuki were to handle the supposed puzzle. This task would require precision and coordination as Ryoku suggested, if they handled it incorrectly one of them could end up seriously injured. The exam had really began and pace was picking up quickly.

Ryoku signaled the group that he was going in and Yuki had plan that was probably equally as crazy as whatever Ryoku planned to do. As Ryoku unleashed his assault on the odd creatures Yuki looked to Yuuko and said “I’m going to try and use ninjutsu to suppress the explosion!” in a strangely confident tone uncharacteristic of himself. By this time Ryoku was already in the air above the wires and explosives he’d created five clones. Yuki ran over below him and as Ryoku was landing Yuki formed several hand signs then placed his hand, which now had blood surrounding the front of it, onto the metal plating. Yuki formed a blood prison around the explosives in hopes of suppressing any fallout.

“This could all be a distraction listen for that monster from earlier.”

Yuki nearly jumped his sister’s thought and tried to focus on the sound of blood.

As Yuuko moved towards the Forest of Death she would notice a peculiar sight. While looking for a key her eyes would find their way to one. Strangely though the key seemed to be sinking into the ground. It appeared the keys didn't just represent the elements, but were also filled with the energies of them. Though details like that didn't matter all too much given the situation Yuuko was currently in. She needed to act fast before the key sunk entirely into the ground. What a mess would be made if she happened to just lose one of the four keys they needed for success. She would move quick, and thankfully find the key in her hands instead of underground. With that out of the way Yuuko would move on following after the person known as Ryoku. He seemed to not care about getting a key. Possibly an attempt to help show he means no harm to the other students? Yuuko had planned on working with him anyways, but she supposed she couldn't speak for the others. Either way it seemed they had all made, hopefully, the right decision and moved to follow him.

As the group moved through the thick forest Ryoku would suggest that the group give short introductions of themselves to better the group effort. Yuuko would not only see this as useful for the exam, but also jumped at the chance to make new friends. She would wait patiently until there seemed to be a good time for her to speak, and would do so. "My name is Kobayashi Yuuko, and I specialize in Ninjutsu. I can use a lot of different ones even some for healing people!" She would say to the others clearly proud of herself. She would leave her introduction at that while making a mental note to further it some other time. Hopefully that would be enough to give her new teammates a good idea of what she would be capable of both in, and out of a fight.

After all the introductions were done the group would find themselves faced with their first obstacle. From what Yuuko could gather it seemed to be either a puzzle, or trap of sorts. Some type of metal plating covered with explosive notes with multiple wires connected to it. As the group scanned the puzzle over a distinct noise could be heard behind them. Yuuko would turn to see two strange creatures she had never seen before. They appeared to be hostile, and maybe had some sort of relation to the large monster from earlier. Either way they spelled out bad news in Yuuko's opinion. Not that she was particularly worried. She had full faith in the group to be able to handle them well. Rightfully so as Ryoku would very quickly make the decision to split the group up. As the other two girls of the group pressed onward both Kosho, and Yuuko would stay with Ryoku to handle the puzzle. Under Ryoku's guidance, and working together with Kosho Yuuko would act. As Ryoku moved to attack the creatures Yuuko would get into position. She would begin making her handseals in order to use the Gravel Shift Ninjutsu. Hopefully it would allow her to shift the earth under the plate to help cover up what was hidden under it. The idea was to use the loose, moved gravel to shield what lie beneath the trap door. After that would be done Yuuko would turn her attention to the creatures. This was an exam for her's, and other's promotions from students to gennin, and she had to give it her all. She would once again begin to make her handseals this time preparing to use a newer technique. Out of the ground around her sand would begin to rise into the air. It would condense, and shape itself into six separate blades of sharp sand. She would launch all six of the blades towards one of the creatures in hopes that she could do some damage to it. Now all that was left was to see what Ryoku's actions of cutting the wires would do, and see where to go from there.

Ryoku

Ryoku would give out the plans which seemed to agree with the group. The two students chosen to move forward would do so and leave the rest of the group to stop the creatures and figure out the puzzle. First Ryoku would send a punch flying at one of the creatures which would make it land and make it scatter backwards, turning into smoke once it cleared. The creature vanished. His second punch wasn't as lucky, as it missed by a few inches. The creature saw the punch coming and twisted it's body to avoid it. It's feet reared up for a kick but just as the creature Ryoku would avoid it. Instead deciding to move away from it towards the wires. A big "BOOM" would sound behind him, if he turned backwards Ryoku would see a some kind of blood dome keeping the blast from going anywhere. Cutting the wires was now meaningless, whatever was inside was most probably destroyed.

Kei

Kei would turn right and start moving deeper into the forest with Masami next to her. The duo would keep running for about 5 minutes before they came up towards a clearing. In that clearing stood a single man, a hooded figure turned and looked at them. A large curved blade slowly started to appear from it's sleeve. In his other hand, it seemed as though it was holding some sort of lever, a golden lever. Of course it wasn't natural for the environment they were in. Would it have to do something with the location of the door? Or some other function that could help them to complete their exam?

Masami

Masami, just as Kei, would see this hooded figure in the middle of the clearing. He didn't seem particularly dangerous but his blade was a threat. Having their eyes fixed in that figure and what he was holding Masami would notice something else. Thanks to her crystal eye she would be able to see a second hooded figure falling from the high trees, sword raised right on top of Kei. Not only were this figures misplaced. They were also aggressive. Would she attack them? save her friend? In the end all they needed, maybe, was the lever. What would she do?

Kosho

Kosho trusted Ryoku, he let him handle those creatures while he came up with plans to save them in the worst case scenario. While he heard the fight going around him Kosho would transmutate a blood prison around the metal plating just in case it exploded. He felt something weird going on under his feet, just as he was about to figure that out. He felt his own blood prison shake, followed immediately by a BOOM. The plate had exploded, no debris came through. The prison was strong enough to hold whatever was inside in. But since the explosion force didn't have any way to escape upwards, it went back into the original position. Whatever treasure or advantage that was inside.... would most probably gotten destroyed.

Yuuko

Yuuko would agree to Ryoku's plan, deciding to start doing his own actions. The Student would shift the ground under the plate, unfortunately. The ground doesn't maintain the same consistency and weight which meant that the explosive device would register a weight shift and activate. In other words, KABOOM! Thankfully Koshos blood prison managed to keep the explosion inside, that also came at a cost. Since the explosion didn't have a chance to escape upwards it went back into it's original position most probably destroying what was inside. Afterwards, Yuuko would use his Sand Starts to backup Ryoku. Seeing as though the second attack missed, Ryoku started throwing his projectiles at the remaining creatures. Miss, miss, followed by another miss, and again, and again. The 6th projectile though, hit the creature right in between the eyes..... or did it have eyes? Anyway, the creature would wail up in pain and vanish in a cloud of smoke.

[To All

Asuka teleported back to the start to see the creature standing there, waiting for her instructions. With a sigh she pointed to the entrance. "Don't give any permanent injuries. I don't want to loose Shinobi before they even get into the system." With that she vanished once more. The creature leaping into the air made his way into the forest. Looking around for any sign of the students. He didn't have much luck unfortunately. That is until he heard it, no matter how far or how ignorant you were. The sound of a bomb wasn't any different. With a creepy smile the creature turned to the dirrection of the sound and started leaping across the trees. Branch to branch. That's where he saw the first Group, it seemed as though they had split up but no matter. 3 was still better than none. With a huge roar it kept running towards them. Making his way closer and closer as each second passed.
